"City officials are dropping all charges against nearly 300 people arrested in two police raids last month, and will instead focus their investigation on the Police Department itself."

FULL TEXT BELOW... ------- Statement made Monday, September 9, 2002
"The significant 10 percent drop in violent crime rates throughout the nation is good news for all Americans, and a credit to the efforts and perseverance of those on the front lines of law enforcement. Firearms crimes have declined significantly, and criminal victimizations are at the lowest point since 1973 -- almost a 50 percent drop over the last 29 years. America's neighborhoods are more safe, and I applaud the men and women who fill the ranks of our local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. Their dedication, bravery and heroism is too often unsung. Going forward, we must remain vigilant in working to reduce crime and make our streets and communities as safe as possible." |

" 'Attention: this facility is accessible to military and law enforcement only,' reads the sign bolted to a metal fence that encloses a four-acre compound in rolling flaxen hills. Only the sharp crackle of gunshots pierces the hot stillness in this secluded place."
"The dusty parking lot overflows with police cars and old military vehicles. Vigilant, gun-toting staffers greet all visitors. "The shooting death of an 11-year-old Modesto boy two years ago has sparked new recommendations to improve safety during SWAT team operations."
"Attorney General Bill Lockyer released a report Tuesday from a statewide group, the Attorney General's Commission on Special Weapons and Tactics, that reviewed tactical operations, training, policy and equipment."
"During a September 2000 pre-dawn raid in Modesto, a SWAT team entered a house looking for a man wanted for drug dealing. After ordering the family to the ground as they searched for the father, a team member's shotgun accidentally discharged and killed Alberto Sepulveda Jr."
QUESTION:
If a regular citizen shot a little boy in the back and the boy died, would this newspaper be merely saying the "shotgun accidentally discharged"?
NOTE:
This news rag not only failed to remind people of the boy-slaughtering officer's name and violent background, but they've also failed to mention that no drugs were found in this death-producing "drug" raid. Instead, they say the gun did it and suggest that AG Lockyer's non-binding "recommendations" have some relevance. |

"Several federal and state laws concern civil libertarians, Arab-American activists and advocates for free speech on the Internet."
"Among them:
"* The U.S.A. Patriot Act, passed in October, which allows FBI agents to get a search warrant to review Internet communication if it determines it is 'relevant to an ongoing criminal investigation,' a far lower hurdle than the original standard of determining that it is likely a crime may have been committed before conducting a search."
"The act also allows for the broad sharing of grand jury information in criminal cases with intelligence agencies, including the CIA, without getting approval from a judge first."
"* The state eased search-warrant requirements in terrorist investigations, meaning law enforcement does not have to show evidence of actual criminal activity to get a judge to approve a search."
"The federal law making it easier to investigate Internet communication allows the FBI to determine what Web sites a person has visited. That power could easily be abused by the government to violate people's privacy, Moss and several Internet users groups said." |

"Could Tom Ridge have said anything scarier or more telling as he accepted the post of homeland security czar? Trying to strike the bell of liberty, he sounds its death knell, depicting government not as the agent of the people's will, but as an imperious power with the authority to give us our democratic freedoms. Which means, of course, that it can also take them away."
"That's exactly what Ashcroft, Bush, Cheney & co. have been up to all year as, in the attorney general's words, the government has marshaled the might of 'every available statute' to root out 'the terrorists among us.' Wrapping themselves in the flag, they have shredded the Constitution. They have sneered at, ignored, or defied the courts and legislatures that are designed to provide checks and balances on uninhibited executive power. They have eroded the precious Bill of Rights protections of free speech, assembly, and association and its assurances of privacy, due process, equal protection, legal counsel, and a fair trialpractically everything but the right to bear arms."
WELL, UMMM....
Actually, the Bush/Ashcroft regime fought to keep the Supreme Court from hearing two valid and pivotal Second Amendment cases, they've ignored the Petition for the Enforcement of the Second Amendment, and their insistence on federally prosecuting local "gun crimes" has received a great deal of support, as well. So the right to keep and bear arms has indeed suffered under the current emperor, unfortunately. |
