"Last month, Gun Owners of America alerted you to legislation that would continue the dangerous trend towards erasing our foundational principles from America's schools -- principles such as the right to keep and bear arms."

"It now appears that the bill may be "fast tracked" to the House floor for a vote."

"That legislation is H.R. 1078, a bill which gives unelected bureaucrats the power to set up Presidential Academies to train educators -- educators who will end up teaching revisionist history and civics."

"Already, federally subsidized curricula in the schools have been chipping away at national sovereignty and the notion of God-given rights for several years." ...

Inequitable Penalties? The Tales of Two Gun Researchers

"While the cases of John Lott and Michael Bellesiles appear to be similar, their subsequent stories have played out quite differently, however. Where Bellesiles was forced to resign, to relinquish the prestigious Bancroft Prize that his book had won for him, and to move to Europe for a time, Lott has continued to push his pro-gun agenda as a researcher at the conservative American Enterprise Institute as though nothing has happened. And judging by the frequency with which journalists use him as an 'expert' on gun policy and on the fact that mainstream newspapers are running his opinion pieces, he's getting away with it." ...

"The claim that about one third of shootings in public schools had been averted by armed citizens over a five-year period does indeed sound impressive. But according to people who have looked into the statistic, there's just one small problem: It seems to be bogus."

-------
What this hackjob does not mention is that while Bellesiles' work of fiction was proven to have contained intentional incidents of fraud. No such thing has been proven in the case of John Lott. Nonetheless, this doesn't stop Bellesiles and the gun grabbers from whining.

"...Frankly it is disgusting to me that a full 2 years have gone by and we only 'have hundreds (that is a little over 200 to be exact) of Federal Flight Deck Officers (FFDOs)' to quote Mr. Robert Johnson, spokesman for the TSA. We are indeed missing the boat on an extremely important layer of security and no one in the Administration, Homeland Security, or the TSA seems that concerned. I will tell you it is possible to have a totally safe program AND do it quickly. Secretary Ridge of Homeland Security and John Moran of the TSA would have you believe the only way to do this is to move as slowly as possible, in the name of safety, in hopes the program will 'die on the vine'."

"Police across the nation increasingly are turning to such clever and, critics say, legally questionable ploys to get DNA from suspects without obtaining court orders. In the past four years, cops seeking DNA samples have created a phony dating service in Boston and have impersonated a public health worker in New York City. They have portrayed a rape counselor in Iowa City, a Taco Bell worker in Brea, Calif., and a diner at a Wendy's restaurant in Upstate New York."

"Police in at least a dozen other U.S. cities and in Toronto have rummaged through garbage cans, sifted through hospital refuse and picked up cigarette butts, drinking glasses, business correspondence and even gobs of spit left by crime suspects on sidewalks."

On Tuesday, lawmakers introduced two new bills, H.R. 3037 and H.R. 3040, that would address two of those three powers.

"The planned use of military commissions - with relaxed evidentiary rules and diminished defendant rights - to try terror suspects." ...

"On the home front, unease is growing over the bending of the Bill of Rights by such means as the Patriot Act, which allows federal officers under the rationale of fighting terror to tap phones, hunt through a citizens electronic communications, and conduct secret searches of homes and offices. Meanwhile, we can hardly pick up a newspaper without reading about totally innocent foreign nationals being deported from their homes and families for the sin of botched paperwork."

"Congress is currently considering a new measure the Vital Interdiction of Criminal Terrorist Organizations Act of 2003 that combines the war on terror with the war on drugs in ways that could further reduce Americans civil rights."

"...Curiously, many police officers favour private gun ownership. They say they are not in a position to guarantee public safety, particularly in remote areas." ...

"A campaign is needed to inform people of the dangers associated with gun ownership. Gun enthusiasts tend to claim self-defence as a reason for possessing a weapon, arguing that criminals are often armed and need to be matched. A gun might indeed frighten off some thieves or be useful at holding them at bay, but guns are rarely used to deter a legitimate threat." ...
