Guns tied to a botched federal weapons-smuggling investigation have been recovered at a second Arizona crime scene ...
[snip] two guns were found in the back of a stolen car in Maricopa last year that had rammed two Arizona Department of Public Safety vehicles.
Federal agents contacted the DPS this week and said a trace of the guns revealed they were part of a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives sting in 2009 that inadvertently put hundreds of weapons bought at Arizona gun stores into the hands of Mexican criminals.
Two guns also were recovered at a December shootout in Rio Rico, where a Border Patrol agent was fatally shot |

We've all heard the saying: no good deed goes unpunished . . . and that's exactly what happened to a South Pasadena resident who was issued a ticket by police for his charitable act. When a major traffic light in the area went out Thursday morning, Alan Ehrlich took matters into his own hands, directing traffic ... Before Ehrlich stepped in, traffic was backed up for more than a mile and it took more than 30 minutes to get through the busy intersection. ... [Richard Gerrish who works at an office located at the intersection] said Ehrlich cleared up the mess in 10 minutes. ... Police responded to the scene and told Ehrlich to stop and issued him a ticket, but never stepped in to direct traffic themselves. |

... South Pas resident Alan Ehrlich ... says traffic was backed up for blocks due to a broken traffic light. He noticed the mess when taking his kids to school and decided to take initiative. ... Onlookers say traffic was cleared within 10 to 15 minutes of Ehrlich directing vehicles. Yet after about 20 minutes, he was issued a citation by South Pas Police for "pedestrian on roadway," he said.
SUBMITTER'S COMMENT: This is cop stupidity at its most egregious. One of the characteristics that has made our country great, both in peace and war, is our willingness to step in when needed and take action. The only just response to this insult is for Police Chief Payne to issue a formal apology and a separate commendation to Mr. Ehrlich. |

The signs No Guns Allowed are being stripped from many Florida government buildings, libraries and airports. And local ordinances that bar people from shooting weapons in their yards, firing up into the air (think New Years Eve) or taking guns into parks are coming off the books. The state has spoken, again, on the matter of guns, and this time it does not want to be ignored: since 1987, local governments in Florida have been banned from creating and enforcing their own gun ordinances. ... But this year the Legislature passed a new law that imposes fines on counties and municipalities that do not do away with and stop enforcing their own firearms and ammunition ordinances by Oct. 1. |

Assaults on police officers are continuing to rise, especially in the metro areas of Missouri.
The FOP says conceal and carry laws have led to more vehicle break-ins, because criminals think there may be guns inside, especially when people leave weapons in their cars at churches and sporting events where guns are banned.

Yet another random shooting by a crazed person at a restaurant in Nevada. What happened to the prospect of the state of South Carolina allowing residents to carry a concealed weapon without needing a permit?
I can't help but think that if that horrible event happened here, someone with a weapon on them might have prevented the magnitude of such a disaster.
I'm talking about allowing a person who has a clean background to carry a gun for self defense. |

So what we need to do is isolate part of the country to be the control group. Theyll be free from new taxes, wont take part in government programs and regulations and can have all the guns they want. In the rest of America, politicians can go crazy with every Keynesian idea, ban trans fats and salt and just generally control everything. Then we can compare the results of the two groups and finally have a scientific answer on what works.
...
If, on the other hand, science tells us huge government is better, then well impose government regulation and high taxation on everyone -- though it might be a little bit difficult since the control group will have lots of guns. |

We recommend an early start. Hunter education classes for first-time license holders are fantastic, in addition to being mandatory. They teach not just the obvious firearm handling precautions, but conservation management and how to be environmentally friendly. There's no comparison between today's programs and what was available as recently as 30 years ago.
Studying and tests are just part of the curriculum. Prospective hunters must also pass a shooting and skills test. The skills test consists of walking through the woods with a partner. During the walk students must traverse downed logs, fences and other obstacles. Instructors grade them on how they work together to be safe. |

The armed student or any armed citizen has a great deal in common with the layman who is trained in CPR. I have released The CPR Corollary as a stand alone monograph. It is developed now into fifteen equivalents of moral purpose and public interest between the armed citizen and the CPR-knowledgeable citizen. The two are identical. |

With less than two months left before Wisconsins new concealed carry law allowing licensed individuals to bring weapons onto campus goes into effect, the UW System has announced that it will support universities in banning weapons within campus buildings.
However, universities are responsible for placing signs at every building entrance on campus in order for the ban to be legal, giving each institution some flexibility. So far, UW-Madison is the only institution to announce that it will post these signs, but all UW members are expected to adopt the same policy. |

In the fall of 2009, ATF agents installed a secret phone line and hidden cameras in a ceiling panel and wall at Andre Howard's Lone Wolf gun store. They gave him one basic instruction: Sell guns to every illegal purchaser who walks through the door.
For 15 months, Howard did as he was told. To customers with phony IDs or wads of cash he normally would have turned away, he sold pistols, rifles and semiautomatics. He was assured by the ATF that they would follow the guns, and that the surveillance would lead the agents to the violent Mexican drug cartels on the Southwest border. |

Mayor Jeri Muoio might negotiate on some issues, but when it comes to guns in city hall, she holds her ground: No weapons allowed.
She has even invoked a rare executive order to ban weapons in the building where the city carries out its business, citing the safety of residents.
"You absolutely cannot come into this building with a gun," Muoio said at a city commission meeting last month. "If you're coming into city hall, leave your guns or weapons at home or in your car."
Muoio's stance is drawing the ire of pro-gun-rights lawmakers and lobbyists, who say she's not abiding by a state law set to take effect Oct. 1. |

Now that concealed carry has been approved for all University of Wisconsin system campuses, each college must decide whether to ban guns, tasers, billy clubs and various types of dangerous knives from campus buildings. It is our belief that UW-Milwaukee should follow UW-Madisons lead and prohibit weapons from all campus buildings, including all residence halls and Engelmann Field. |

However, I often wonder if the people who cherish the 2nd Amendment also cherish freedom. They are not the same concepts. Like everything else in the Constitution, the 2nd Amendment is subject to interpretation. Until the year 2008, it was a subject of much debate whether the 2nd Amendment protects an individual right to bear arms or a "collective right" to allow the states to organize a national guard. Incidentally, I have no understanding of what a "collective right" is, and I suspect neither would any of the drafters of the Constitution. |

When the government infringes upon Second Amendment rights through regulation and harsh gun control, it is accused of violating ones right to self-defense. There is no greater example of this violation, however, than when the federal government attempted to punish a man for killing a grizzly bear that threatened his life and the lives of his family. Fortunately, when the story was publicized and received a great deal of negative media attention, federal prosecutors decided to drop the charges. |

I am a sportsman and a gun owner who feels compelled to write this letter. I hope others also be compelled. It is high time that we all send a message to Springfield demanding our Second Amendment rights.
Its not right when people from surrounding states have more gun rights than we do. Even when an Illinois citizen goes outside the state to buy a gun, there is a waiting period even when that state doesnt have a waiting period. We as Illinois citizens are all guilty until proven innocent. |

Ive never touched a handgun and I havent been to Florida in decades, yet this month Florida officials mailed me a permit to carry a concealed gun.
If Congress adopts a bill that the National Rifle Association is pushing, Floridas licenses would apply to 49 states in all -- allowing their holders to carry hidden guns in places such as midtown Manhattan, where the New York Police Department rejects most such applications for concealed- carry permits.
Only Illinois and Washington D.C., where residents arent allowed to carry concealed handguns at all, would be exempt. |
