Former governor L. Douglas Wilder chided fellow Democrat Mark R. Warner for flirting with the National Rifle Association in the Virginia governor's race and bestowed his endorsement today on only one member of the statewide ticket, attorney general hopeful A. Donald McEachin.
"Now, I'm not certainly calling the NRA skunks, but I don't believe that Mark Warner wants to be in the company" of the nation's most politically powerful gun-rights organization, Wilder added. |

The Sacramento gun violence involving security guard Joe Ferguson that left five people dead is giving a boost to new gun control legislation that appears headed to the governor's desk.
"It just reinforces the need. Unfortunately, there' s just too much gun violence," Democratic Assembly speaker Bob Herzberg, said.
"Here, you've got officers with handguns going into a gunfight with an individual with an AK-47," Sacramento County Sheriff Lou Blanas said. |

The FBI is investigating the theft of high-powered weapons from a military installation in Nebraska. The theft was discovered on Saturday morning by military police. It happened at a missile alert facility in southwestern Nebraska, near Kimball.
An M-16 machine gun and the grenade launcher for that weapon along with ammunition and an M-60 machine gun were stolen. No nuclear components were taken from the site. |

FBI agents are beginning to visit Web-based, email firms and network providers, according to engineers at those companies who spoke on condition of anonymity.
One major network service provider said that FBI agents showed up at his workplace on Tuesday "with a couple of Carnivores, requesting permission to place them in our core, along with offers to actually pay for circuits and costs." |

Why did licensing lose? Because the sponsors of the legislation in question, Assembly Majority Leader Kevin Shelley, D-San Francisco, and Sen. Jack Scott, D-Altadena, couldn't make a sufficiently convincing case that licensing would accomplish anything useful.
More to the point, they couldn't convince two of California's premier law enforcement organizations that licensing handgun owners was either necessary or advisable. |
