"Dusty Horwitt's Collectivist Vision of the Cyber-Future" ...

"Dear Dusty,"

"Are you sure you're not channeling Josef Goebbels? He would certainly understand your plan to bring order out of Internet chaos. The question has always been, whose order? Freedom and liberty, like capitalism, are inherently messy and inefficient systems, except when you compare them to the collectivist alternatives, which never work and are more often than not murderous."

"Let me put it another way. If you remove the ability of people to peaceably and freely express themselves, they will, according to the Law of Unintended Consequences, find other ways to express themselves -- ways that are not so peaceable." ...

"Recently at a gun show, I was looking over an old US service 1911 .45 pistol. Its serial number was low and the gun itself in only fair condition. The seller said the previous owner claimed the gun had been used in the Mexican Punitive Expedition in 1916. This comment brought back a flood of memories about why I have an interest in these early Colts." ...

"It begins to appear that the [NRA] and the rest of the guns-first crowd won't be satisfied until something approaching the whole American nation is armed against itself. Washington, D.C. is the latest example."

"Washington's ordinance outlawing handguns was the vehicle that led to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling this year that the Second Amendment is an individual right and thus forbids any such blanket ban."

"The district's City Council has scrambled into compliance with a temporary ordinance and is working toward a permanent one. The council is inclined toward enacting some safety controls that the NRA would abominate maybe trigger locks, registration, restrictions on semiautomatics: it is so far unclear just what." ...

"It's been 17 years since the federal government banned the use of lead shot in shells used to hunt waterfowl. ..."

"... But now the quest for environment-friendly green ammunition is taking a new turn. Several states are considering an outright ban on all lead ammunition."

"California led the charge on this issue when a rare California condor turned up dead from lead poisoning. Condors are large vultures and therefore primarily scavengers. ... Even big-game hunters in California must now use lead-free bullets, and several other states may soon make similar rules." ...

Submitter's Note: Since "gun control" is a loser issue, the antis seem to be switching to "ammunition control".

"On Sept 10th, 2008 I watched in dumbfounded amazement a Today Show news report covering the vicious beating of an unarmed man on the Philadelphia subway." ...

"... What left me dumbfounded was the response of both the reporter and ... Philadelphia Police Chief Charles Ramsey. They both were simply amazed by the lack of bystander response to intervene or to call for help." ...

"I found myself slack-jawed. For years law enforcement official such as Chief Ramsey have drilled the premise that we (the people) should 'leave these matters to the police and other trained authorities'. We have been told to comply with the attackers instructions, don't confront them, don't take matters into your own hands ..." ...

"A 10-year-old Hilton Head Island boy has been suspended from school for having something most students carry in their supply boxes: a pencil sharpener."

"The problem was his sharpener had broken, but he decided to use it anyway."

"A teacher ... noticed the boy had what appeared to be a small razor blade during class ..."

"It was obvious that the blade was the metal insert commonly found in a child's small, plastic pencil sharpener ..."

"The boy -- a fourth-grader described as a well-behaved and good student -- cried during the meeting with his mom, the deputy and the school's assistant principal."

"He had no criminal intent in having the blade at school, the sheriff's report stated ..." ...

"Consider the great political divide that pits outdoor recreation interests against one another..."

"On one hand, there are environmentalists who favor wilderness protection for thousands if not millions of acres of public land. ... They tend to skew urban and vote Democratic."

"On the other side are consumptive users of the outdoors. They enjoy hunting, are willing to manage for species they like to hunt ... and are avid defenders of the Second Amendment. ... They tend to be more rural and vote Republican."

"These two characterizations are, of course, stereotypical. Lines between the two groups occasionally blur. Neither is entirely right or wrong. In recent elections, though, both groups have played key roles." ...

... " . . . Obama, with an even greater legislative majority will do the same, or worse. This despite the undeniable fact that gun control has been a losing political issue for your party . . . How's that working out down there in Texas, eh?"

"It is not my fault that your party chose to vest its national leadership hopes in two of the most liberal mokes ever to come down the political pike, Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi. Surely despite their words (and we gun owners have long ago ceased to pay attention to words in an election cycle, either yours or the ill-named 'Republicans') they will once more deliver us gun control. It is in their liberal genes."

"But to deny it in the press is mendacity to the nth degree." ...

Antigun Sandy Treadwell just put out a large, full color postcard mailer titled Sandy Treadwell: Standing Up for New York Sportsmen. In it he says: "Sandy Treadwell will support legislation to end frivolous lawsuits against gun manufactures. These lawsuits are a backdoor attempt to restrict gun ownership. They are unfair." Someone forgot to tell him Congress passed that law 3 years ago.

"The White House race between Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain came back to Colorado this week as Democratic veterans credited Obama with supporting broad increases in veteran benefits while Republicans countered that McCain was the best man on gun-owner rights and Western issues."

"Colorado is viewed as one of the key 'swing' states in the November election, which is why the television channels are full of Obama and McCain advertising. Obama's campaign pulled together a conference call of veterans backing the Illinois senator Wednesday, while the GOP got Colorado Sen. Wayne Allard and Rep. Heather Wilson, R-N.M., to tell reporters about McCain's and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's record on gun rights and the West." ...

Gary Nowak has received the Brady Campaign's endorsement, as a candidate who will 'Fight To Keep Dangerous Weapons Out Of The Hands Of Dangerous People.'"

"... The Riviera Beach cops have been rather diligent in enforcing a new city ordinance targeting droopy shorts and trousers, according to police reports. Since officers began their crackdown last month, they have arrested at least 11 other baggy pants perps (of that group, two are juveniles). .... One of the juveniles, in fact, cursed out Officer J. Thornton and said, according to one affidavit, 'Your a cracker and ain't got shit better to do.' ..."

"New York Bank Robberies are up and the NYPD blames the banks. While the banks certainly could do more such as utilizing bulletproof glass for the tellers (and not banning their employees from carrying guns for their own protection), I personally feel the primary responsibility falls to the bank robbers themselves. They are after all the folks performing the illegal act of robbing a bank. Some blame could also go to our revolving door penal system that places thugs back on the streets after a short stint behind bars so that they can resume their career in crime . . ." ...

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Trials have been scheduled for two Grand Forks police officers accused of forcing a man to stand outside in frigid weather for 20 minutes with no coat, hat or gloves.

Officers David O'Toole and Eric Straus are charged with reckless endangerment for the Feb. 10 traffic stop involving Jason Hickman of East Grand Forks, Minn.

A prosecutor says the wind chill made it feel like 42 degrees below zero at the time and Hickman says he suffered frostbite to his ears.

O'Toole's trial in Grand Forks is scheduled to start Nov. 18 and the one for Straus is set for Dec. 16th.

O'Toole has been demoted and is on unpaid suspension after the mayor decided his actions did not warrant termination. Straus resigned.
