Gwen Patton does not carry a gun specifically because she is a lesbian. She carries a gun because she believes random evil can put its hand on you at any moment - and gay people face additional danger. Tom Nelson, local Pink Pistols chapter president, at his dining room table holding his Colt AR-15 rifle. "Yeah, because someone mugs you on the street, they want your wallet, they want your watch, they want money. A woman might also face a threat of rape," she says. "Another level is when they don't like you for what you are. There's a quantum leap in danger."

Blame Gun Violence In Chicago On Gangs, Not Police Officers

As of this writing, 3,033 people have been shot in Chicago this year, yet less than half of 1 percent of those incidents involved the police, accounting for five people killed and 14 wounded. And, last year, there were 2,988 shootings with 25 involving police; this is less than 1 percent. The people in the neighborhoods do not give information nor support police investigations, so the police just stay out, and these shootings go unsolved. Blaming the cops, in effect, has given gangs control of our cities. Black and Hispanic gangs are contending for control of the drug trade. Drugs and guns are being shipped across the Mexican border by Hispanic cartels and are distributed by black street gangs. So, why blame the police?

As the Nov. 8 election draws nearer, the battle is heating up for the votes of Nevada and Maine residents concerning restrictive anti-gun ballot initiatives being considered in both states. In Nevada, gun-control advocates are pushing Question 1, an initiative that would punish law-abiding gun owners but have no effect on criminals or violent crime. A yes vote on Question 1 supports requiring all firearm transfers to take place through the agency of a licensed dealer, with both parties present and a background check conducted. Note that this applies to all transfers, not just salesmeaning a Nevada resident wouldnt be able to gift a treasured heirloom gun to a child without getting an FFL holder involved.

It claims the lives of approximately 30,000 Americans each year. It plagues people at home, at work, at places of worship, and at play. It creates lifelong disabilities. It leaves families and communities scarred. It causes health care costs to rise dramatically. It is gun violence, and its ills resemble a public health crisis. In the past, the federal government has rallied resources to fight public health crises. The spread of HIV/AIDS, tobacco-related deaths and motor vehicle fatalities were all met with coordinated government intervention.

A defense attorney says a man charged in a shooting death at a Pennsylvania party last year will argue that he fired in self-defense. Thirty-five-year-old Jorge Luis Gomez III will go to on trial Monday in Blair County on criminal homicide and aggravated assault charges in the May 2015 death of 28-year-old Kai Carter. The Altoona Mirror reports that attorney Thomas Dickey said Friday that "for sure" self-defense will be one of his arguments on behalf of Gomez.

When it comes to keeping Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton out of the White House, all gun owners must do their part between now and election day. Yet the formidable foe that might actually be the deciding factor in defeating Clintons presidential run could be a demographic she expects to win handilywomen voters. The key here is the growing number of women gun owners, many of whom are turning away from Clinton and toward Trump. In fact, women represent the fastest growing segment of gun owners, far outpacing any other demographic.

A sign in Boothbay Harbor is raising some eyebrows. Seemingly a play on the Black Lives Matter slogan, it reads "black rifles matter: Yes, we have 'em. No, you can't take 'em." Some local businesses are worried the sign sends the wrong message and could make some tourists feel unwelcome. The man behind the sign, Linc Sample, insists it has nothing to do with race and that black rifles or black guns are just another word for semi-automatic weapons.

Indiana mayors are up in arms about a state law prohibiting local legislators from creating new gun control restrictions in their areas of legislative responsibility. Passed in 2011, the state preemption of local ordinances makes it nearly impossible for municipalities to make additional legislation regarding the sale or carry of guns, ammunition, or firearm accessories. Proponents of the law argue that without this protection, gun owners would struggle to possess and transport firearms legally within state lines because they would be forced to comply with a patchwork of local laws and regulations.

Dueling op-eds published last week considered whether a war on guns namely tougher mandatory sentences for repeat gun offenders is the right strategy for combating Chicagos gun violence epidemic. Cook County States Attorney Anita Alvarez argues that the revolving [prison] door for gun offenders is to blame for Chicagos gun violence. Public Defender Amy Campanelli challenges her, predicting that this war on guns will fail much the way the war on drugs has. Both Alvarez and Campanelli make valid points. But both ignore the most obvious root cause of Chicagos gun violence crisis: guns.

From the outset, an undercover gun-buying sting by federal agents in Milwaukee was plagued by confusion. Local ATF agents wanted to target their longtime nemesis, the Outlaws. They had been going after the aging motorcycle gang with what they dubbed "Operation Smokin Piston," breaking up untaxed cigarette operations on the south side, but were having little success nailing the gang.

There were many lessons to be learned from what happened at Cudell Recreation Center in December of 2014 when Tamir Rice was shot by police, but an incident in Parma showed that not everyone learned them. "It looks like two kids have a gun in the pavilion. I don't know if it's real," according to a 911 caller. The call was hauntingly similar to the call that drew officers to 12-year-old Tamir. But several things happened differently. First, an officer stayed back, and the two boys put the airsoft guns down and their hands up.
