"The assault weapons ban is expiring as the Justice Department reports that the nation's crime rate last year held steady at the lowest levels in the 31 years since the government began surveying crime victims."

"Gun dealers throughout the country said the federal assault-weapons ban, which sunsets at midnight on Sept. 13, was ineffective because of the loopholes in the law, the Washington Post reported Sept. 13."

"According to gun dealers, there would be no significant difference in the types of guns that can be sold when the ban expires and those that were sold during the 10-year ban. That's because a loophole in the law allowed gun makers to make cosmetic changes to their firearms to circumvent the ban."

" 'It's a big nothing,' said Gary Taepke, owner of Wolverine Shooting Sports in Brownstown, Mich. 'The ban didn't change anything. It is strictly cosmetic.' "

"A 10-year-old ban on assault weapons expired across the United States on Monday with a political firefight but no apparent rush to rearm by gun fanciers."

"At The Shooters Shop in West Allis near Milwaukee, Wisconsin, salesman Peter Kinkead said that by noon he had received more than 20 phone calls in addition to walk-in inquiries."

" 'People are using us as a resource, asking what the law covers. Now that the ban expired I think we'll see more security guards who will come in and be able to purchase a proper (ammunition) magazine for their work,' Kinkead said."

"The ban on so-called 'assault weapons' was nothing more than a cosmetic restriction, banning certain firearms not because they were used in crimes, and not because of their performance, but simply because they looked 'mean.' "

"True assault weapons, which are capable of fully automatic firing (that is, machine guns such as Uzis and AK-47s), are not available lawfully to civilians except in highly regulated circumstances, they have not been available since the 1930s, and they remain essentially unlawful to possess even after the present gun ban expires."

" 'Assault weapons' banned by the 1994 law have never been used in more than a miniscule percentage of all violent crimes -- between 0.25% and 2.0% of violent crimes."

"The manufacture of highSTANDARD-capacity magazines is one of the more controversial features that have been illegal under the ban for the last decade." ...

"With the expiration of the ban Monday, ArmaLite owner Mark Westrom said Friday there is no question he'll stop using the smaller magazines." ...

"At midnight tonight, the federal ban on so-called 'assault weapons' expires. As a constitutional moment, the expiration is as significant for the Second Amendment as the March 3, 1801, expiration of the Alien and Sedition Acts was for the First Amendment. These federal laws were not found unconstitutional by any court, but the laws expired in disgrace because our political system, as expressed through congressional elections, determined them to be infringements on the Bill of Rights."

"As detailed by Leonard Levy in his book Origins of the Bill of Rights, the political defeat of the Alien and Sedition Acts resulted in a much broader, more speech-protective understanding of the First Amendment. It is possible that that the political defeat of the gun prohibition will have a similar effect."

Arnold Schwarzenegger's desk lies a bill to ban .50 caliber rifles, a target rifle fancied by well-to-do hobbyists. "A 10-year-old ban on specific high-powered assault weapons fades into history today, barring a last-minute change of position by U.S. senators and President Bush."

"The ban's effectiveness, debated even before President Clinton signed the 1994 law, always was a source of contention between gun-control advocates and pro-gun supporters such as the powerful National Rifle Association."

"Both sides cite a bevy of statistics and studies on whether the assault ban effectively cut down on the use of the weapons or whether crime was reduced or the lives of police officers and civilians were saved. Conflicting statistics are presented by both sides, each citing numbers that support their position."

"Gun manufacturers in several ways made the 1994 law moot by designing guns without certain equipment banned by the law, both sides agree."

"THE FEDERAL 'assault weapons ban' expires today, as President Bush and Congress won't renew the 10-year-old law. Will their inaction spur bloodbaths in the streets? Hardly."

"The assault weapons ban was a misnamed and ineffective piece of legislation designed to give Congress and President Clinton the appearance of doing something about gun crime. Just what did they do?"

"Well, they banned ammunition magazines of more than 10 rounds. They banned things like bayonet attachments and flash-suppressing muzzle attachments. Did they actually remove so-called assault weapons from the streets? No. Witness the 1997 Los Angeles bank heist in which robbers used guns banned under the law to wound 16 people before being killed by police."

"It is wrong that Congress failed to vote on extending the 10-year-old federal ban on assault weapons - a ban that expires today despite the number of lives it has likely saved. President Bush, the Senate and House of Representatives all failed to use their respective powers to make sure this life-saving job was done."

KABA Note: Notice that this whining editorial fails to cite one single statistic to support its contention that this worthless ban saved lives. The government itself has not seen any evidence to support this claim. But that doesn't stop them from spouting.

"Assault weapons serve no useful purpose on the streets of America. These military-style weapons are designed for killing people, not for target practice or hunting. The ban has helped to reduce their use in crimes."

KABA Note: Again note the lack of supporting evidence and the histrionics that gloss over the fact that the people have every right to own these weapons, just as the Founding Fathers intended.

In this one fear-mongering rant, this particular gun prohibitionist says all of the following about the demise of the useless semi-auto rifle and magazine ban:

1) "grievous and giant step backwards"
2) "obvious peril"
3) "catastrophe"
4) "grave danger"
5) "manipulation of the political process"
6) "extremist agenda at the expense of our children's lives"

She forgot to tell us is that guns cause AIDS and the West Nile Virus and that we are all going to Hell when we die.

In the minds of sore loser gun banners like this bigot, the word "extremist" means, "anyone who disagrees with me." Therefore, let us all to embrace the term and wear it proudly.

"Despite last minute pleadings by anti-gun extremists, the crown jewel of efforts to destroy the 2nd Amendment will soon crumble to dust. "For the better part of the last five months, the gun ban lobby has engaged in a desperate and deceptive political campaign. As the sunset date approached, they have constantly attempted to scare the public by referring to 'Uzis' and 'AK-47s,' and stating that, these specific firearms 'will be in our neighborhoods unless the assault weapons ban is renewed.' "

FULL TEXT BELOW:

If President Bush really cared about the safety of our nation and its citizens, why has he done nothing to extend the ban on assault weapons? And why can't Congress muster enough votes to pass an extension bill? Are they all kissing up to the National Rifle Association to get votes? You bet.

The stupid "statement of the week award" should go to House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, for saying that "all this does is make it tougher on manufacturers and gun owners for no benefit." No benefit? Making it harder on the manufacturers and gun owners isn't that the purpose of the bill? I certainly hope so.

This child of the "modern" age also uses the following words and phrases:

1) "brutal weaponry"

3) "such a level of paranoia"
4) "fierce determination of the gun freaks"
5) "tobacco-chewing country villain in camouflage"

Gun dealers in Maine say the assault weapons ban has done little to stop firearms enthusiasts from buying rapid-fire guns.

The decade-old federal law banning the production of semiautomatic assault weapons and bullet clips that hold more than ten rounds expires Monday.

At the 27th annual Bangor Gun Show over the weekend, dealers said those weapons could still be owned, traded and sold, which meant people could purchase them under the ban.

Ralph McLeod of Buyers Guns in Holden said the lifting of the ban will have "zero effect."

Charlie Rumsey, the coordinator of the gun show, said he's glad to see the ban expire. He said the focus on firearms should be directed at catching and prosecuting people who misuse guns.

Police said a gunman with an assault rifle opened fire on a Miami-Dade County police officer around 2 a.m. Sunday, striking her twice and setting her cruiser ablaze.

The officer is expected to be OK. It's not known how many rounds the gunman fired, but one of them hit the police cruiser's gas line, setting it on fire. Police are looking for the gunman. They say they know his name, but are not releasing it to the public.

"Somebody that's going to fire on a uniformed officer in a police car with an assault-type weapon, that person's obviously showing very disregard for any law enforcement or any authority," said Pete Andrew of the Miami-Dade County Police Department.

The officer was in the area of Northwest 183rd Street and Miami Avenue in Miami Gardens when she pulled over the suspect. Police say the suspect got out of the car and opened fire.

"Congress is caving in to the powerful gun lobby by allowing a sensible ban on assault weapons to expire today. It's a reckless decision. Not only should the ban continue, it should be expanded."

"Just about every major law enforcement organization -- including the New York State Association of Chiefs of Police -- supports the ban. These police leaders question, and rightly so, why politicians would make it easier for criminals to carry more firepower than the police generally carry themselves."

-------
That's quite an ignorant assumption. By restoring the people's right to keep and bear a certain type of firearm, according to this "writer," Congress is automatically arming criminals.

What is the implication here? Did criminals specifically wait for the ban to sunset before rushing out and purchasing a weapon with which to outgun police? Or are all gun owners who choose to own said weapon - as it is their constitutionally protected right to do - automatically branded as criminals by this paper?

"City Council members yesterday opened fire on the Bush administration and Congress for the expected lapse of the assault-weapons ban today."

"George Bush is doing nothing to protect the American people from this scourge,' Council Speaker Gifford Miller said."

-------
Scourge? Here's another politician spouting paranoid vitriol. These guns are used in less than 2 percent of crimes committed with firearms, and yet, according to him, they're a "scourge."

"A surge in the use of machetes in gang-related attacks in the Boston, Mass. region proves that criminals, not guns, are and always have been the problem at the root of crime, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) said today."

"News agencies in Boston have reported that gang members in the greater Boston area have also been arming themselves with Chinese throwing stars and Japanese metal chain whips, also called Nunchukas. Several communities have passed machete ordinances that restrict or ban the big knives."

" 'When are politicians going to wake up and understand that it's not inanimate objects - whether we're talking about guns, knives, clubs or rocks - but criminals that are causing urban and suburban problems,' challenged CCRKBA Executive Director Joe Waldron. ..."

"...Congressional Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton says the House is expected to schedule a vote soon on whether to repeal all of D.C.'s gun laws."

"She says she's outraged and will fight against it, just like she has with two similar attempts. Norton says 13 city kids have been killed by guns this year, and a repeal of gun laws would put youngsters at even greater risk."

"Norton stood alongside presidential hopeful John Kerry and Mayor Tony Williams at a downtown news conference."

"The mayor pointed to the serial bank robberies, saying the suspects armed themselves with what he calls a 'staggering array' of assault weapons. He says the city doesn't need to get into what he calls 'an arms race with criminals.' "

No, of course it's much better to lay down and become a compliant victim.

"The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV) today hailed Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry's crime prevention program, which includes banning military-style assault weapons and mandating background checks for all gun sales at gun shows."

"As Kerry unveiled his plan, he received the endorsement of the National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO), a coalition of police unions and associations from across the United States."

"Lately, Democratic presidential contender John Kerry has been making laughable attempts to appeal to gun owners, despite his very clear record in favor of gun control. This would probably be funnier if it weren't for the fact that Bush, too, has a very clear record of undermining the Second Amendment. Most supporters of gun rights seem to be oblivious to this, or at best only dimly aware. Pointing out the failure by Bush to protect the right to bear arms nearly always brings out the question 'So you think Kerry would be better?' Obviously only those who agree with Sarah Brady think Kerry would be better on guns, but it would take some considerable effort for Kerry to do worse, as Bush has attacked gun rights in his domestic agenda, by Administration actions in the courts, and in his foreign policy."

"Taking the last first, in Iraq there is a total gun ban in place. The interim constitution provided to Iraq by the Bush Administration contained declarations of 'rights' to security, education, health care, and social security for the 'liberated' nation, but no right to bear arms. In contrast, Saddam Hussein's Iraq allowed all sorts of firearms to be bought and sold openly without restriction. To be sure, Hussein was an awful, evil man, a tyrant and a thug. But Hussein was better on gun rights than George W. Bush."

"A robber who used a rusty pitchfork to stick up a bank got away -- and so far, finding him has been like looking for a needle in a haystack."

"The man, wearing sunglasses and a mask, entered Security Federal Bank Tuesday morning and threatened employees with the 4-foot-long pitchfork. The man took an undisclosed amount of money."

"The robber dropped the farm tool as he ran from the bank through a wooded area to a golf course behind the bank, police said."

Poster's note: This is what happens when citizens are encouraged to be meek and submissive, even in a "pro-gun" state.
