"YES! Theres no solid proof that the ban on assault weapons has had any impact on reducing the number of gun crimes in the U.S. The expiration of the ban will have little effect on the types of guns and accessories that are sold and traded across the country!"

"NO! Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry said, 'Today George Bush made the job of terrorists easier and made the job of America's law enforcement officers harder and that's just plain wrong.' The ban on assault weapons helped reduce crime and murder!"

"We'll send your vote to President Bush and Congress."

... "Last Tuesday Kerry's campaign claimed: 'John Kerry's opponents are worried because he's the first Democratic candidate to support Second Amendment gun rights and to be an avid hunter.... The Republican Party and George Bush's campaign will stop at nothing to mislead voters about John Kerry's record.' Campaigning in St. Louis last Thursday, Kerry again claimed, 'I support the Second Amendment. I've been a hunter all my life." Earlier this year, Kerry said, "I believe that the Constitution, our laws and our customs protect law-abiding American citizens' right to own firearms.' If you believe some of the responses from voters, Kerry's statements and his constant photo-ops with guns have convinced many that he supports gun rights." ...

Moveon PAC Ad Lies About Legality of Machine Guns

"The latest ad from Moveon PAC is about as misleading as it can be. Through words, graphics and sound effects, it invites viewers to think that the expiration of the ban on 19 semiautomatic assault weapons will allow people legally to buy fully automatic machine guns that can fire 'up to 300 rounds per minute.' That's false."

"It has been illegal to buy a machine gun without federal clearance since 1934, and remains so."

"The ad also claims that Bush 'will let the assault weapon ban expire,' which is misleading. In fact, Bush spoke in support of the ban during his campaign four years ago and his spokesman said as recently as May of last year that he still supported it. It was Congress that failed to consider extending the ban and didn't present Bush with a bill to sign." ...

"Some readers assume that since I live in Berkeley, look like a hippie and hate war more than anything else the government does, Im some kind of pacifist or that I support gun control, or, more accurately, victim disarmament."

"No. Im a libertarian, I believe in self-defense, and gun control is the stuff of tyranny. One of the very few positive things to happen on the national political scene in recent years is the expiration of the abhorrent ban on so-called 'assault weapons.' It is a triumph for liberty."

"But it is not without its downside. All libertarians know the many upsides to any reduction in anti-gun tyranny. I want to focus on the downside."

"George W. Bush a president who has flouted the gun rights of Iraqis and American airline pilots, to say nothing of American airline passengers will get credit for the expiration, when he deserves the scorn of every decent gun-owner in America. ..." ...

"Our long national nightmare is over. With the 10-year federal ban on 19 types of assault weapons expiring, happy days are here again. ..." ...

"As someone born in the free fire zone called the United States, I possess certain inalienable rights. To me, the Second Amendment is sacred, even if most of the others are a bunch of crap. Renewing the ban would be the beginning of a long, slippery slope ending in the settling of personal disputes by hand-to-hand combat or--worse still--calm, sober discussion. Having to protect my family from an intruder or in-law with a Smith and Wesson .38 Special is a scary thought. Self-defense in the home should consist of dozens of bullets sprayed haphazardly throughout the bedroom, preferably in near complete darkness." ...

"President George W. Bush and Congress took a bloody powder when they failed to stand up to the gun lobby and renew a modest ban on assault weapons."

"The law that expired Monday banned the manufacture and importation of 19 kinds of military-style assault weapons, and the manufacture of magazines with more than 10 rounds. True, the ban had loopholes and gun makers dodged it by removing outlawed parts. But the government should no more have dropped the ban because it was not entirely effective than it should repeal laws against murder or crack cocaine because they haven't stopped homicides or drug sales." ...
-------

Poster's Translation: Gun owners are simply criminals waiting to happen.

KABA Note: The difference is that the laws against murder punish a harmful act. Under the AWB it was entirely possible to face 10 years in federal prison for purchasing a 15 round magazine from an Undercover BATFE man who'd polished the "Law Enforcement Only" label off.

"The Law Enforcement Alliance of America (LEAA) proclaimed the expiration of the 1994 Clinton gun and magazine ban a victory for crime fighting. LEAA Executive Director, retired New York police officer James J. Fotis, spoke out in support of the gun ban expiration, 'this marks the end of an era, the end of the Clinton gun ban days when real criminals were ignored in favor of failed gun control. From this point forward our nation's lawmakers can focus on laws that target real criminals, not cosmetic firearm features.'"

"LEAA's Fotis added that law enforcement has nothing to fear from the expiration of the Clinton gun ban, because the ban never prevented criminals from obtaining firearms. 'Even the Bill Clinton and Janet Reno Justice Department admitted that this law has had no impact on crime,' said Fotis, referring to DOJ studies on the impact of the Clinton gun ban."

"Do you feel more fearful today then yesterday? Gun control advocates apparently do, but not for the reason that most people think."

"At the midnight just passed, the federal "assault weapons" ban expired."

"Despite claims that allowing the ban on some semiautomatic weapons to end will cause a rise in gun crimes and a surge in police killings, letting the law expire will show the uselessness of gun-control regulations and the inconveniences they cause."

"Very soon it will be obvious to everyone that all the horror stories that were used to make the case for the ban -- one of the two major gun control regulations over the last 36 years -- were wrong."

"The risks Americans wake up to Tuesday are being portrayed as deadly serious. Sarah Brady, a leading gun control advocate, warns that 'Our streets are going to be filled with AK47s and Uzis.'" ...

"The 10-year-old national ban on assault weapons expired with little fanfare Monday."

"Several guns once illegal to purchase can now land in the hands of almost anyone with the money to buy them."

"The expiration of the ban means firearms like TEC-9s can now be legally bought. But some of the 19 weapons -- foreign-made guns like the Russian- or Chinese-made AK-47 and the Israeli-manufactured Uzi -- are still banned under a 1989 law prohibiting imports of specific automatic weapons." ...

"Law-abiding gun owners have hardly been 'penalized' during the past 10 years."

"Under the assault weapons ban, which was next to useless by the time it emerged from the political process in 1994, gun owners still could still have 10 rounds in the clips of their semiautomatic rifles, whereas 'cosmetic' attachments like bayonets were banned."

"The law also banned certain silencers and other devices to shield the flash of rifle fire. "After ten long years the ban on so-called assault weapons has finally expired. I use the phrase 'so-called' because the truth is that real assault weapons have been strictly regulated since the National Firearms Act was enacted in the 1930s."

"The expiration of the ban does not legalize the sale of machine guns, including fully automatic Uzis, AK-47s, and 'street sweeper' shotguns. The expiration of the ban simply means that a few previously outlawed cosmetic features will now be available as options on many weapons. These cosmetic features include things like pistol grips, bayonet lugs and muzzle flash suppressors. The fundamental way these firearms operate will not change; the new weapons will be different from those previously available in appearance only." ...

"The reference is to the cascade of self-serving and mostly sophomoric rationales coming forth from the gun-nut lobby to justify the recently approved dove slaughter in Michigan and to head off a serious and enthusiastic attempt by birders, sensible outdoors-people and others to reinstate the ban via the statewide ballot."

"Some of the noisiest blather has come from Michigan's big-time trophy hunter and rock 'n' roll meister, Ted Nugent, who licks his chops and drools whenever doves get mentioned. It was he who bragged at the state Capitol early last November -- as the latest (and successful) campaign to browbeat the Legislature into lifting Michigan's 99-year-long dove-hunting ban got under way -- about how he intended to eat them 'tonight,' 'next week' and 'for Thanksgiving.'"

Police found 41 plants, a three and a half gallon bucket and metal tin full of the drug, 9 rifles and shotguns, a pistol and a 357 magnum.
