Since 1982, Kennesaw, an Atlanta suburb, has required every head of a household to own a gun and ammunition, with an exemption for those who conscientiously object. One effect of the enactment was the appearance of yard signs: "Never Mind the Dog-Beware of Owner." Another was that the Kennesaw crime rate dropped and remains well below the national average. |

A grand jury last month indicted Detective Ron Smith, 43, on charges of aggravated assault, perjury and possession of a concealed weapon without a permit. Meade County State's Attorney Jesse Sondreal said Monday that he dismissed the assault charge, after an earlier decision to drop the perjury charge because the evidence no longer supported it.
In a statement, Sondreal said the police investigation "establishes that Ron Smith was defending himself from a violent premeditated attack, and he responded in a manner which was neither excessive nor unreasonable under the circumstances." |

The parent of a Liberty High School senior is suing Bethlehem Area School District over his son's 10-day suspension for fighting. Robert J. Stauffer Sr. wants the court to block suspensions against the 17-year-old and to order his son's permanent record expunged of the penalty. The suit, filed Monday in Northampton County Court, said Michael Z. Stauffer was acting in self-defense when he got into a scuffle while hurrying late to class Sept. 3. It said the other student 'confronted, menaced and assaulted' Stauffer, and claimed the punishment was 'unlawful, improper and/or illegal' given the circumstances, state law and the district's suspension policy. |

She hasn't spoken much on her views regarding the judiciary, or other matters relating to crime.
But the advantage of not being a Progressive is you can appreciate emergent trends a lot more since they happen without anyone's coordination or special input. Click the link, see for yourself.
In a world of Sarah Palins, fewer rapists and wife-beaters will have their day in court.

A man who threatened to behead two women because they were Christians was attacked in self-defense early Saturday and injured so severely, police say, that his eye was to be removed.
Russell Bowman, who called himself an atheist, showed up with a large knife at the women's apartment in the 700 block of Tia Juana Street about 3:15 a.m., police said.
Another resident grabbed a shotgun and ordered him to put the knife down. When Bowman refused and began approaching, the person hit him in the eye with the butt end of the weapon, police said. |

Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama's hopes for carrying Montana have diminished over the past few months, and Montanans say it comes down to one word: guns.
"In Montana, we like our guns. We like big guns. We like little guns. We like shotguns. We like pistols. Most of us own two or three guns. Gun control is hitting what you shoot at," the state's Democratic Gov. Brian Schweitzer told the New York Times in April. When asked why he thought the Democratic nominee would not win his state, he replied, "guns."
Ed.: If the D's really wanted to stop gun control as a campaign issue, maybe they should have nominated someone who is actually pro-gun? |

Fact: Obama, who received the endorsement of the American Hunters and Shooters Association, a non-partisan organization dedicated to promoting hunting and common-sense gun policy, is on record as affirming gun ownership rights.
Fact: At a press conference in Watertown South Dakota on May 16, 2008, Democratic candidate Barack Obama unequivocally makes clear his support for gun ownership in his clear and direct statement: "It is an individual right, the people have the right to lawfully bear arms" ... You can't make it much clearer than that.
Ed.: (paraphrasing) I think "I don't have the votes in Congress to take your guns" is *much* clearer. |

Sheriff Clarke says he has had enough.
"I want to prevent these acts from happening, not investigate them after they happen," Sheriff Clarke said.
The sheriff would like to have bus drivers trained to use pepper spray, and a member of the Transit Union says some of them already do.
...
The sheriff is also recommending buses with closed compartment areas for buses.
"No other form of public transportation allows you unfettered access to the operator: airlines, subway systems, Amtrak, even cabs now provide a shield," Sheriff Clarke said.
...
The sheriff says if pepper spray doesn't work, he will consider other forms of self-defense so that drivers can protect themselves, and their passengers. |

Congress is likely to take up a bill of some sort this week to repeal the District of Columbia's gun registration requirements and make it easier for citizens to legally buy semiautomatic weapons. Rather than being a significant step toward more freedom in our nation's capital, however, it is likely to play out as a political ploy designed to boost the re-election prospects of conservative and moderate Democrats who come from districts where gun control is (to put it mildly) less popular than among some liberal corners.
Ed.: The Senate D's will *never* allow this bill to be heard before the election. Obama will not have to vote on any truly controversial issues before the election. |

We shouldn't be so smitten with what politicians look like, or with what they say. It makes more sense to me if we look at what they do.
Personally, I don't want to follow Obama anywhere. ... and certainly not down the path of dismantling our Constitution. I really have no desire in joining hands with him as he tramples on the First Amendment (see "fairness doctrine") or the Second Amendment (he's never seen a gun ban he didn't like).
Once again, I feel as though I'm going to be forced to vote for a lesser of two evils. ... At least one of the contenders is a patriot. I can't say that for Obama. I've looked at his voting record, and I know what he stands for it's not freedom. |

As Bowman threatened the women, another resident of the apartment building grabbed a shotgun and ordered Bowman to drop the knife. The power of a gun put a hero in charge of the situation, because of its enormous potential stopping power. Bowman refused the order and approached the gun-wielding hero.
So what did the hero do, armed with a weapon that could have removed a good portion of Bowman's head? He whacked the criminal with the butt of the gun - a polite response, considering the circumstances. As that got the job done, the hero never resorted to using the business end of the weapon. |

The National Rifle Association has designated as "must" legislation a bill that, according to law enforcement officials, would not only eliminate most of the District of Columbia's firearm control efforts but also permit the carrying of semi-automatic rifles and handguns on the streets of the nation's capital.
And when the NRA speaks, members of Congress on both sides of the aisle quake. Welcome to Baghdad on the Potomac, fellow Americans! |

To the dismay of the Washington, D.C., police chief and others who are trying to limit gun ownership in the nation's capital, Rep. Travis Childers is pressing legislation that would rollback restrictions. Childers, a Democrat who won a special election in May to represent the 1st District, hopes to offer his bill next week as an amendment to a much narrower bill sponsored by Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C. Childers says his legislation is needed to comply with the Supreme Court's ruling in June that the city's wide-ranging gun ban violates the Second Amendment's right to bear arms. |

Will Shipman and Tom Swenson slipped through the bars that blocked the mouth of the old mine. They weren't bars really, not like you'd find in a jail or at the counter of the old Winston County Land Bank. These were rails, taken up from the double track that had serviced the big old mine, set into concrete and welded together like a porous scab across the massive stone entrance arch. The engraving in the capstone read "1918". It was hot outside and the cool beckoned them inward. Being young and skinny, they had no trouble getting through the narrow openings.
Submitter's note: Best damn chapter yet, in my humble opinion. It's the last you'll glimpse Charlie Quintard until the book comes out.

A Rockaway Township police sergeant's hunger for some breakfast sandwiches has cost him his job. Sgt. Christopher Stahl pleaded guilty Monday to theft for walking out of a Quick Chek store on West Main Street in Rockaway Borough on Dec. 15, 2007 with eight breakfast sandwiches worth $29.45. Under his sentence in state Superior Court, the 39-year-old Stahl will have to pay $100, and he loses his job.

FULL TEXT: A 40-year-old man walking his dog in the nude Friday night in northwest Tallahassee was Tasered by police when he became belligerent and refused to follow an officers commands.
An officer on patrol spotted the man about 8:15 p.m. in the 2200 block of Hartsfield Road, said Officer David McCranie of the Tallahassee Police Department. When asked what he was doing, the man told the officer, Allah told me to watch a Bruce Willis movie and walk the dog, McCranie said.
He was obviously having some sort of emotional distress, he said. It was unfortunate we had to use the Taser. It was the only way we could subdue him without having to hurt him.
The man was then sent for mental-health evaluation and treatment.
