"THE FEDERAL Crime Control Act of 1994, also known as the 'assault weapons ban,' was recently allowed to expire due to a 10-year sunset provision. Anti-gun groups such as the Brady Campaign lobbied intensely to renew and expand the ban, attempting to take advantage of the public's fears and general lack of knowledge about the issue. Though anti-gun groups would have Americans believe that this was a significant loss in the war against crime and terrorism, Americans should not accept these baseless claims."

"Like a fish bone lodged deep in their throats, the assault weapons ban has been a constant irritant to gun owners ever since President Bill Clinton signed the bill into law on Sept. 13, 1994."

"The assault weapons ban was part of a larger piece of legislation called the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, which had its roots in the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968. The fact that the 1994 law had a sunset provision that would make it necessary for Congress to revisit it in 10 years did little to temper the displeasure that gun owners expressed toward their congressional representatives." ...

"Republican congressional leaders declined to bring reauthorizing legislation to the floor for debate or vote, saying there were not enough votes to pass it."

"The TEC-9 is arguably one of the most notorious assault weapons around."

"Small, lightweight and powerful, it can discharge up to 50 rounds in mere seconds when equipped with a high-capacity clip. For gun control advocates, the gun became a disturbing symbol of both daily gang warfare and random mass murders like the high-profile 1999 Columbine High School shootings that killed 15 people."

"For the last 10 years, the manufacture and sale of the TEC-9 and 18 other assault weapons, along with clips containing more than 10 rounds, have been outlawed under the Federal Assault Weapons Act. ... "For starters, consumers can now purchase one of the 19 firearms specifically outlawed by the 1994 ban, including such action-movie staples as the Uzi, the TEC-9, the Kalashnikov, and the Street Sweeper shotgun. The law's authors had to be as precise as possible in crafting the ban, since the phrase 'assault weapon' isn't really part of the gun-making vocabulary. Rather, it's a catchall term that gun-control advocates define as covering any firearm designed for rapidly firing at human targets from close range. The 19 guns called out in the ban are all semiautomatic in nature: They can eject spent shell casings and chamber the next bullet without human intervention, but only one round is fired per squeeze of the trigger. Not coincidentally, the verboten 19 were largely the sorts of high-profile guns that even gun neophytes have heard of, either through watching the nightly news or by reading Tom Clancy novels." ...

Ohioans For Concealed Carry announced today the release of two versions of a video advertisement promoting the benefits of obtaining an Ohio Concealed Handgun License (CHL) for self-defense.

The video depicts a scenario involving a woman returning to her car in a parking lot, and being confronted by an armed criminal.

"In the technology age, video productions are being utilized to communicate important messages in ways that no written statement can," observed Chad Baus, OFCC Spokesperson. "There isn't a single person in Ohio that hasn't found themselves in a position where they sense their own vulnerability. Fortunately, most escape harm. FULL TEXT BELOW:

Forty-six Brazilian policemen traveling to a sports competition were caught with their guard down this week when four Brazilian thieves robbed the bus carrying them to the event.

The bus with 46 unarmed policemen from northeastern Paraiba state was headed to the city of Salvador in Bahia when two cars with armed robbers forced them to stop on the country's main interstate highway on Tuesday. [emphasis added]

"The robbers took their cameras, cellular phones, wallets and even the sports uniforms and sneakers," a police spokesman said.

The suspects, who escaped, apparently did not know the bus was full of police when they stopped it, he said.

"We are looking for them, but I cannot say there's any particular ardour here due to the fact that policemen have been robbed."

"State Duma plans to adopt certain amendments by the end of this month, aimed at restricting the overall turnover of firearms and explosives in the country. The amendment however will apply only to Russian special services. At the same time, many delegates express their affirmative views to make the firearms market more liberal. According to them, if the state is unable to protect its citizens, let them have the right protect themselves, writes 'Izvestia'." ...

Even the Russians, with their long history of dependence upon and subservience to the State, are figuring it out. So why can't Sarah, Rosie, Diane, Chuck, et al.?
