Although individual speakers are free to come up with their own curriculum, the ACLU encourages attorneys to highlight real legal cases where there have been tensions over issues such as the right to bear arms, search and seizure, and free speech.

The idea is to get the kids to look at all sides and articulate the different perspectives and then begin to figure out where they fall, what their thoughts are, said Rebecca Rauber, communications director with the ACLU. So many adults have trouble coming to terms with all the pushes and pulls of various constitutional tensions that it is really interesting to get the kids involved, too.

Schappell also raised a different concern, saying, what if a real gun were painted to look fake or like a replica?

"Some criminals are stupid, and some very, very clever," Schappell said. "From that viewpoint, my thinking is make everything look real and just have more training... When it comes to firearms, nothing's simple.

"This might sound cold and callous, but ... at some point and time, the person instituting the action has to be accountable for the action he's taking," Schappell added. "And if he wants to come across as having a gun and threatening somebody with it, and that costs him his health or his life, that's the risk he took."

Two months after shooting suspect James Holmes allegedly shot 12 people to death and injured another 58 in an Aurora movie theater, Coloradans are staunchly against stricter gun-control laws, a new Denver Post poll shows.

Respondents were asked, "What do you think is more important to protect the right of Americans to own guns? Or, to control gun ownership?"

Fifty-six percent said it was more important to protect the right to own guns versus 39 percent who said controlling gun ownership and 5 percent who answered they weren't sure.

I have been reading all the opinions about the gun control issue. As an ex-police officer, I can honestly say that cars kill more people per year than guns.

Guns have helped to keep this country free. People should have a constitutional right to defend themselves.

Nearly every real estate agent has a story.

They agree to meet strangers to show them vacant houses in rural areas.

The agents use words like creepy, awkward, odd, uncomfortable and downright scared to describe the feelings potential homebuyers give them at times.

Just last week, Donna Sharp, a real estate agent at Premiere Realty, was in one of those situations.

"The McNeil case is a prime example of the age-old unequal justice in the court system," Rev. William Barber, president of the North Carolina chapter of the NAACP, said in a statement. "The Castle Doctrine doesn't appear to apply to him. In Georgia, a black man's home is not a castle. His home means nothing before the law."

Georgia passed a Castle Doctrine law, allowing homeowners to stand their ground and use deadly force if threatened, a year after McNeil's shooting. The state law previously required homeowners to show they had tried to retreat before using deadly force in order to claim self-defense.

The private ownership of firearms, several argued, might be permissible for hunting harmless animals, but never for acting in self-defense. Well, self-defense might be permitted on some occasions, but not if the assailant merely had a knife, because guns are more dangerous than knives.

That right has faced some severe challenges in recent years.. In 2008, the United States Supreme Court ruled in D.C. v. Heller that the Second Amendment is, indeed, an individual right. Two years later, the Court held in McDonald v. Chicago that the Second Amendment applies to the individual states. Both cases were decided on a 5-4 vote. Put another way, Americans are just one Supreme Court justice away from losing those rights.

State v. Holt, D-905-CR-2011- 00640, was an aggravated battery with a deadly weapon case in Clovis, New Mexico at the District Court at 701 N. Main Street, before Judge Ted Hartley. The defendant, R. Holt, was accused of bashing a mans head in with a shotgun. In State v. Holt, Chip Venie was able to show that all three witnesses in the case, Alvin Stacy, Tim Stacy, and Lee Lupo (owner of Sparkle Cleaners in Clovis, New Mexico), were not telling the entire truth. Criminal defense attorney Chip Venie showed Mr. Holt was the actual victim and acted only in self defense.

The July 20 mass shooting at a suburban Denver movie theater that killed 12 people and wounded 58 others did not move opinion on gun rights, where 49 percent oppose gun control measures and 43 percent said limits on gun ownership would not infringe on the constitutional right to bear arms.

Retired Army Col. Glenn Werther, 62, called the Colorado shootings a "horrible thing," but said gun control is not the answer to curbing violence. "There are crazy people out there. How you monitor that, I have no idea," said Werther, a resident of Broad Brook, Conn., and a member of the National Rifle Association. "People are going to get guns that should not have them."

At least 32,000 guns have been stolen in the Houston area over the past five years and only 7 percent have been recovered, according to an analysis of police records published Sunday.

The stolen guns contribute to violent crime and have been used in at least 19 area murders and likely more, although records are incomplete, the Houston Chronicle reported.

...

Houston is so close to Mexico, we do have guns that go to Mexico. So there could be people stealing guns and taking them across the border, she said.

RJFirearms, a new gun store, is not named for its owners, Paul and Trudi Wilbur of Wisconsin Rapids.

A look at the stores business graphic two dog tags encircling the business name gives a hint to customers: one is for Justin Ross; the other for Roland Wilbur.

One of the special people our shop is named after is our nephew, Cpl. Justin D. Ross (right side dog tag), Paul Wilbur wrote on the stores Facebook page. We lost Justin last year while he was serving in Afghanistan.

In decision after decision a new liberal majority would transform the law on abortion rights, property rights, obscenity and indecency, delegation of congressional power to administrative agencies, separation of powers, standards for review of administrative agency action, federalism, war powers and the right to bear arms, among others. That accumulated jurisprudence would form a formidable mountain of precedent in defense of federal power. By choosing prospective Justices who are in their 40s and 50s, Obama could alter the course of constitutional jurisprudence for three to four decades.
