Bill promotes anti-gun teaching in schools?

"Virginia-based Gun Owners of America claims H.R. 1078, which establishes 'academies for teachers and students of American history and civics and a national alliance of teachers of American history and civics,' would further erode support for the Second Amendment."

"A version of the bill has passed the Senate, but the House bill remains in the House Education and Workforce Committee. It was introduced by Rep. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., and has 220 co-sponsors."

"According to a summary, the bill would direct the chairperson of the National Endowment for the Humanities to award competitive grants to nonprofit educational institutions to 'establish presidential academies for teaching of American history and civics to offer workshops for teachers of American history and civics' and 'congressional academies for students of American history and civics to offer workshops for outstanding students of American history and civics.' " ...

"GOA officials, however, are concerned that such academies, if established, will continue what it perceives as an anti-gun bias in the public schools, and 'will use anti-gun texts that conform to the federal guidelines on teaching civics and history.' "

"One such text, called 'We the People,' encourages students 'to start questioning the wisdom of the Second Amendment, asking the student whether the right to keep and bear arms is still as 'important today' as it was in the 18th century, and to decide what 'limitations' should be placed on the right,' GOA said."

"Lott did a search in the media database called Lexis-Nexis to find articles written about the shooting. The base contained 208 unique articles, and one of them by the Associated Press would have been picked up by literally thousands of newspapers. Other articles would have also had widespread distribution."

"Of the 208 articles about the law school shooter, only four mentioned that there had been a defensive gun use. Indeed, two students upon hearing the shots, ran to their vehicles and brought their guns within the 1,000 foot gun-free zone that has been unconstitutionally established by federal law. They encountered the murderer as he was finishing reloading. At the sight of their guns drawing down on him, he surrendered."

"With nearly two years gone by since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, it's high time the federal Transportation Security Administration gets moving on training the qualified commercial pilots who want to carry a gun. While Congress ordered a program implemented in November, representatives of the Airline Security Pilots Alliance said Tuesday that fewer than 200 of the estimated 40,000 willing pilots have been trained. Working at the snail's pace of training 50 pilots a week, it'll take the TSA 15 years to enable the pilots to protect themselves, their crews and passengers."

"That's shameful."

"His most controversial film came in 1974 with 'Death Wish.' " ...

"The character's vigilantism brought widespread criticism, but 'Death Wish' became one of the big moneymakers of the year. The controversy accelerated when Bernard Goetz shot youths he thought were threatening him in a New York subway."

"Bronson made three more 'Death Wish' films, and in 1987 he defended them: 'I think they provide satisfaction for people who are victimized by crime and look in vain for authorities to protect them. But I don't think people try to imitate that kind of thing.' "

A north Wales man brandished a firearm and a metal bar during a town centre incident.

Lee Griffiths, 28, of Mold Road in Buckley, admitted possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, possessing a firearm when prohibited because of a previous prison sentence, and possessing an extending metal bar as an offensive weapon.

It follows an incident in the town on June 28 of this year.

A charge of affray, which he denied, was dropped, and the case was adjourned for sentence next month.

John Philpotts, prosecuting, said at Mold Crown Court that the seriousness of the case was the fact that he had brandished the weapons and it was not in the public interest to pursue a trial on the affray charge.

Notice how the Associated Press in its zeal to veer away from portraying criminals as criminals draws focus away from the fact that thus scum was endangering his own child. They deal with shooting stories much in the same manner, blaming the gun and drawing focus away from the criminal act.

"In November 1994, USA Today columnist Julianne Malveaux said about Justice Thomas: 'I hope his wife feeds him lots of eggs and butter and he dies early like many black men do, of heart disease. He is an absolutely reprehensible person." ...

"In May 2000, on the PBS show 'To the Contrary,' Linda Chavez, a conservative activist, argued that a gun might help a woman like herself stop a rapist. Bonnie Erbe, the host, dismissed her with this: 'If you look at the statistics, I would bet that you have a greater chance of being struck by lightning, Linda, than living where you live, and at your age, being raped. Sorry.' " ...

"Finally, we come to one of the most vile comments I have ever heard. Maureen Dowd, columnist for the New York Times, was discussing how Justice Thomas dissented from this spring's U.S. Supreme Court decision on racial preferences at the University of Michigan. On June 26 she wrote: 'The dissent is a clinical study of a man who has been driven barking mad by the beneficial treatment he has received.' "

"This comment is so offensive and racist far worse than anything Trent Lott has ever said that it makes me despair that I belong to the same profession as Maureen Dowd. She is comparing a dignified, principled and accomplished black man to a DOG."

"Yet, because she's a liberal, no one seems to care."

"The best way for Libertarian candidates to get in a position to obtain a high elected office in our current system would be to climb inside a 'Trojan Horse' of sorts and infiltrate one of the major parties. As long as most Libertarians refuse to do this based on 'principle,' they'll remain as consistently overlooked as a rice cake in Ted Kennedy's pantry. They'll be forever sitting on an airport runway, refusing to get on a 747 because they're convinced they can build their own out of some two-by-fours, glue, mason blocks and the motor from a weedwacker."
