McCain has been at war with gun owners for a long time. In 2004, the year he considered switching to the Democratic Party and teaming up with John Kerry as vice presidential candidate, he sponsored an amendment to S. 1805 that would have outlawed the private sale of firearms at gun shows. The GOA pointed out the measure amounted to a nationwide ban on gun shows, because every member of an organization sponsoring one could be imprisoned if the group failed to notify each and every "person who attends the special firearms event of the requirements [under the Brady Law]." |

At the Beijing Olympics, 14 gold medals were won in shooting sports. Here is some firearms trivia: More countries compete in shooting at the Olympics than in any other sport, save one, soccer.
Shooting is a sport that is huge around the world but draws little attention here, even though firearms and the American way of life are forever intertwined.
In Beijing, a Connecticut woman, Emily Caruso of Fairfield, finished 15th in the 10-meter air rifle competition. Joe Cuccia of Bethany is ranked in the top 10 nationally with a handgun by the U.S. Practical Shooting Association. Next week, he travels to Tulsa, Okla., for the national championships. |

When thinking about this weeks article, I had intended to keep it short but there were several interesting legal developments that validate the observation that people dont like trial lawyers until its their trial lawyer. Or, as I have repeatedly noted to a number of wing nut Republicans who go berserk when I point this out, to wit Abraham Lincoln was a trial lawyer.
... A new [Morton Grove] Village ordinance recognizing the right to private handgun ownership was in effect adopted and the Village agreed not to replace it with any direct regulation other than to adopt existing Illinois state laws. The repeal of Morton Grove's handgun ban passed on July 15, by a 5-1 vote. |

The Alaska Independence Party is a 3rd party in the great tradition of Alaskan self-reliance which wants federal government power drastically reduced in their state.
Sarah Palin was apparently a member in 1996 for a brief time with her husband Todd, about the same time Barack Obama was community organizing in Chicago for freebies from the federal government. She switched parties to Republican before running for mayor of Wasilla that year.
What liberals are belittling as a fringe party problem for her is something that middle America and libertarian-minded voters will cheer. Most rural states are fed up with Washington DC. |

The arrest of a gun-carrying man near a Pennsylvania event for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was unfair, a gun rights group alleges.
Members of OpenCarry.org contend the arrest of John Noble, 50, of Industry was uncalled for, alleging state police suspended a state law allowing the right to bear arms ahead of the scheduled presence of the Illinois senator at a nearby site, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported Monday.
...
"I am a threat to no one," the 6-foot-3, 280-pound gun owner told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "Mr. Obama doesn't trump my constitutional rights. The president of the United States doesn't trump my constitutional rights." |

Various friends who lean to the Republicans have tried to convince me of the merits of Sarah Palin. One who is not normally easy to impress says she has it all: "She's sexy, terrifically smart, a right-wing reformer who is not scared of vested interests."
So why the nagging feeling that she's just about the last thing the Western world needs a heartbeat away from the Presidency?
For starters, there's the whole God and guns thing. I have limited interest in either but a great deal of respect for those who choose to make either their hobby, or even build their lives around the former. In America the problem so often comes with people who have an equal interest in both. |

Many of the school administrators and law enforcement officials we contacted this week regarding teachers toting guns to school had a very visceral reaction to the idea. We can't say that we blame them. Among the many reasons we shudder at the prospect of guns on campus is a very simple one: kids will be kids. Anyone who has ever had children of their own, or anyone who has worked around children, knows that they are by nature curious creatures. If a teacher was to leave his or her loaded firearm where a child could find it, the results could be tragic. |

In the wake of recent media reports that a small Texas school system is allowing personnel to bring guns to school, you may be wondering if the same policy would be a good idea in Tate County.
The word from both local school officials and law enforcement?
A resounding, "no."
"I could tell you lots of reasons," says Senatobia Police Chief John Boyd. Among Boyd's concerns were the lack of training required to obtain a Mississippi gun permit, and the lack of accountability for their firearms that it required of civilians.
Tate County Schools Superintendent Gary Walker agreed.
"We have a good relationship with law enforcement, and we leave that to them," he said. |

Schools superintendent David Thweatt told the New York Times that the district had considered several options -- tranquilizer guns, beanbag guns, Tasers, Mace and armed security guards, but each was lacking in some way. "We devil-advocated it to death," Thweatt said. It's hard to argue with that kind of thoroughness. But many locals are upset, nonetheless. Many say they can't remember the last violent crime in the small, rural town. Many fear that might change, with teachers packing heat and all.
So, when your youngster complains after two days back to school, about anything, threaten to send them off to, no, not military school, but a much scarier place: Texas. |

All those character attacks are dishonest distractions cooked up to keep us from looking at the real Barack Obama. His opponents dont want us to see his detailed plan to lower our taxes. They dont want us to know that his career in constitutional law led him to strongly support the Second Amendment. Theyre afraid that if we know what a practical moderate he really is, and what common-sense positions he actually holds, well vote for him.
Ed.: Yeah, Obama is *almost* as pro-Second Amendment as Paul Helmke. |

The firearms classes he offers are not through the Kremmling Police Department, but Bob Dillons experience as a police officer is beneficial to his students.
I just believe in armed citizens, he said. I always have and always will. Dillon, 52, formed the corporation, 4BarD Enterprises Inc., last May, and already the number of people signing up for the Basic Concealed Carry course this year has doubled. |

The possession of firearms is one of the touchiest subjects in the US and has been for years. Some think that bearing arms is a (patriotic) right while others fight to avoid more bloodshed in schools...
In light of all this, Stop Handgun Violence (SHV) has decided to make a strong and memorable statement regarding firearm legislation. Its latest communications campaign, run by Modernista!, is aimed at the NRA, possibly the most powerful political lobbying organization in the US. As we all know, the NRA is one of the biggest promoters of the free sale of firearms, survival training and shooting sports. |

Police can almost never interpose themselves between a madman and his victims. The usual response time for a SWAT team to be fully deployed and ready to interdict at a campus shooting will be from 30 minutes to an hour. How many corpses can pile up in that time? And, the standard doctrine for the first-arriving police officers will be to hold and establish a perimeter for the incident, not to intervene. These are the lessons written in innocent blood from Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois University.
What about Kanelis' scenario of the armed professor seeking to stop a madman? About any public policy, you can say, "What if?" |

Montgomery police are investigating the Sunday night shooting death of an 18-year-old man.
...
A person has been questioned in relation to the investigation, Barnett said.
"From what we were told by witnesses at the scene, the victim may have been armed with a handgun, and might have been shooting at someone," he said. "We are treating it as a death investigation right now, because it may be a case of self-defense." |

A headline in some Monday editions declared that Houston "opens its arms" to our neighbors from the east fleeing Hurricane Gustav. But it's clear, this time around, not all of us are in a welcoming mood.
Indeed, one reader commenting on the Chronicle's Web site suggested the headline should have read "Houston area, prepare to bear arms!!! Here we go again!!"
Someone questioned when Houston would have a hurricane "so we can take all our undesirables to New Orleans and leave them?" |

Mark Marchiafava says hes earned the right to wear his .357-caliber Magnum pistol in a hip holster in Gonzales.
And, he says at a local mall, city residents paid him to demonstrate that right.
I wish the taxpayers of Gonzales knew just how much money it is, the 55-year-old Marchiafava adds.
In January 2006, the longtime Baton Rouge resident was at the same mall, wearing the same pistol, when a Gonzales police officer asked him why he was carrying a gun. |

So here we have a massive assault led by Federal Government law enforcement agencies on left-wing dissidents and protesters who have committed no acts of violence or illegality whatsoever, preceded by months-long espionage efforts to track what they do. And as extraordinary as that conduct is, more extraordinary is the fact that they have received virtually no attention from the national media and little outcry from anyone. [W]e've essentially decided that we want our Government to spy on us without limits. --- Submitter's note: "The more we do to you the less you seem to believe we are doing it." -- Dr. Josef Mengele, who conducted "medical experiments" on prisoners at Auschwitz concentration camp
Ed.: Next thing you know the cops will be executing dissidents and dumping the bodies in ditches. |

Palin Pick Protects Pistol Power, says Gun Law Expert, and Overshadows Obama Oscillation on Second Amendment Issues. When GOP presidential nominee John McCain last Friday picked Alaskas sharp shooting Gov. Sarah Palin for his vice-presidential running mate, the selection underscored the significance of Americans gun rights in the forthcoming national elections and began to galvanize the Second Amendment movement into support for the McCain candidacy, right to self-defense advocate John M. Snyder stated here today. The McCain-Palin ticket, Snyder added, contrasts sharply with gun-grabbing records of Democratic presidential nominee Barack Hussein Obama and vice-presidential nominee Joe Biden. |

MEXICO CITY President Felipe Calderon faced one of his biggest challenges Saturday as Mexicans poured into the streets nationwide for mass protests against the tide of killings, kidnappings and shootouts sweeping the country.
Despite the arrest of top drug kingpins, little has improved ... Homicides have surged as drug cartels battle each other for control of trafficking routes ...vicious attacks against police nearly each day. In ...Chihuahua alone, there have been more than 800 killings this year, double the number during the same period last year... a dozen headless bodies were found in the Yucatan Peninsula...kidnappings are up 9 percent, averaging 65 a day. Many more go unreported because victims fear police involvement.

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
Government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.... We've been tempted to believe that society has become too complex to be managed by self-rule, that government by an elite group is superior to government for, by, and of the people. Well, if no one among us is capable of government himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else? All of us together, in and out of government, must bear the burden. The solutions we seek must be equitable, with no one group singled out to pay a higher price. Ronald Reagan |
