The 158th annual Bloomsburg Fair starts in just over three weeks and this year fair officials are stepping up security.
Fairgoers are no longer allowed to bring guns and there will be new security measures at the gate.
In addition to not being allowed to bring guns onto the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds, volunteers will search all backpacks, large purses, and strollers at the entrance. Bloomsburg Fair officials say the increased security comes after the Boston Marathon bombing and Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.
Bill Barratt oversees security at the Bloomsburg fair.

Borough leaders in Gilberton decided whether a controversial police chief on suspension would be allowed back on the job.
Chief Mark Kessler has gotten national attention back in July for the profanity-filled videos he has posted online which show him firing automatic weapons.
As his 30 day unpaid suspension was set to expire at Midnight Friday, council voted to extend that suspension until a disciplinary hearing could be held.
Flanked by borough attorneys, Gilberton Mayor Mary Lou Hannon read a brief letter sent by suspended Police Chief Mark Kessler`s attorney, requesting that his suspension be extended.

SUBMITTER'S COMMENT: Earlier this year we were praising this man for his "2nd Amendment Preservation Resolution."

Why Shooters Are Turning to Mini Red Dot Sights for Pistols

For many seniors, a mini red dot can solve the aging eyes issue. Often seen in competition and having used one myself, I can attest to their ability to negate bad eyes. However given a choice and the vision, I would opt for iron sights. Main reason is that often it is difficult to quickly pick up the dot without a lot of practice and my experience over the years tells me that the great majority of gun owners do not practice nearly enough. Read the article below and decide for yourself. FYI, S&W came out with their CORE model of their popular M&P pistols which come with mounts for the popular red dot scopes out there. No gunsmithing involved. Just buy one of the compatible scopes and you are good to go.

Should Your Concealed Carry Gun Have a Light Trigger?

A light trigger can be the solution to us old guys with hand problems. I know that I have been buying Single Action guns as I get older. Just bought a Ruger 1911 Commander and was amazed at how effortless it was to shoot it like I was 30 years old again. The trigger had about a 3.5 - 4 lb. trigger pull and a short reset. I was having so much fun knocking the center out of targets that I wished that I had more ammo with me.

However, there are those who feel that too light a trigger may result in shooting when you did not intend to. My answer to that is that if I draw my gun it is to legally shoot someone trying to harm or kill me and who cares what the trigger pull weight of my trigger is if I am legally allowed to use deadly force?

This is not the first time police have used paramilitary tactics to raid peoples properties to enforce regulatory laws in the absence of any justifiable threat of harm. Heres a list of the most outlandish SWAT team raids across the county.

I have been sitting on 800 rounds of .45 ACP that I had bought for my old XDs .45 which I no longer own. No fun to shoot and you had to have a perfect grip on the gun to avoid a jam. If I relaxed my hand a little, it would do all the things people post about. Now with the recall, I am doubly glad I sold it. To me, there is only one gun that you should use to shoot a .45 ACP, a 1911. For me, the best 1911 I have shot in the last few years is the new Ruger 1911 Commander.

AS WE BEGIN another school year, the memory of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School returns to prominence and the momentum to pass stronger gun control laws will continue to grow. The 20 children and six adults who were tragically killed in Newtown, Conn., have caused the majority of Americans to support more federal and state legislation to curtail gun violence.

To date, the powerful National Rifle Association has been successful in advancing the argument that gun control must be resisted to protect the Second Amendment. In the 1990s, the gun control debate involved handguns and small-arms fire. Today the debate rages over the deadliest types of assault weapons and guns that no civilian in America should be allowed to own.

The Pickens County Sheriff's Office is not expected to file charges against a man who shot and killed a Cherokee County resident last weekend.

Capt. Frank Reynolds with the sheriff's office said the shooting of Scott Terrell, 44, appears to have been done in self-defense.

Just after midnight last Sunday, the sheriff's office responded to a call of a fatal shooting at 1051 Waleska Highway 108 in the Tate community.

Deputies arrived at the home and found Canton resident Scott Terrell, 44, dead at the scene. Reynolds said it appears the owner of the home, Alex Rebo, shot Terrell in self defense.

This morning, Newmarket's Mr. Michael Lesser tried to take me to task and educate me about the meaning of the Second Amendment. He addressed me personally and said something rather peculiar about my understanding of its application to the militia. He wrote: "'A well-regulated militia,' in the meaning of the day, meant 'well-trained' and not necessarily under any authority."

Conservative organizations are hate groups and Tea Party supporters are potentially dangerous extremists, according to educational materials the Obama administration is using to indoctrinate members of the nations armed forces.

In response to a Freedom of Information Act request made by good-government group Judicial Watch, the Pentagon recently released 133 pages of lesson plans and PowerPoint slides provided by the Air Force from a January 2013 Defense Department diversity training center student guide entitled Extremism.

Thanks to a new law cutting the length of gun training classes, Trunk Monkey will soon be gone.

Concealed handgun instructor Michael Cargill said hes filled some time in the required 10-hour course with lighter material, such as videos of a bruiser chimpanzee that springs from car trunks at the touch of a button to thump people.

With courses chopped to four to six hours as the law, like hundreds of others, took effect Sunday, we can cut out the videos and stick to the meat of what people need to know, said Cargill, owner of Central Texas Gun Works in Austin.

If he had it his way, Dale Haywood would take House Bill 1421 a step further.

Haywood bought a .22-caliber Remington single shot rifle at a pawn shop three years ago to add to his collection, and he would attend a law enforcement-led auction if it were open to average citizens, not just arms dealers.

"Why are they discriminating against the individual?" the 78-year-old dove and deer hunter asked. "I'm not a criminal."

The Mississippi Supreme Court unanimously upheld the state's open carry-gun law Thursday, allowing it to take effect after a circuit judge's order had kept it on hold about two months.

"This court now finds that the circuit judge erred as a matter of law when he found House Bill 2 to be vague and, therefore, unconstitutional. He also erred when he stated that a 'reasonable person reading the bill could not discern what the law allows and what it prohibits,'" according to the ruling signed by Justice Randy Pierce.

Eight years ago, Rick Ector had just pulled into his driveway in Detroit after work when two men approached him. They asked for money and pulled out a gun. He handed over his cash, and they left. Though he reported the incident, to his knowledge, the two men havent been caught.

...

Ector had never before owned a gun. After the incident, he not only legally armed himself; he became a certified firearms instructor and a National Rifle Training counselor; he now runs the Ricks Firearm Academy in Detroit.

Unlike most members of the National Rifle Association, Ector is black. Since guns are the leading cause of death among African-Americans 14-18 years of age, black people tend to favor gun control.
