Almost half of the 1, 000 people who gathered at Carleton College to hear Charlton Heston's speech wore black to protest the NRA president' s appearance.
The nation' s leading gun advocate hardly talked about guns at all. He spoke instead about freedom and told students to ignore political agendas.
Instead, he told his audience to vote for " freedom first." He said students' role in the campaign season is as important or noble as the roles of the nation' s founders... |

When the Legislature passed a law in early 1999 barring Atlanta's lawsuit against gun manufacturers, the industry expected a quick dismissal of the case.
But the lawsuit is still alive. |

Great Britain has proposed giving extra development aid to poor countries that agree to destroy surplus weapons, as part of an effort to reduce the massive illegal trade in small arms, Reuters reported Sept. 13.
The proposal was introduced to the United Nations General Assembly by British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook. "We will seek the aid of the World Bank and other international institutions to fund the destruction of surplus firearms and reward this with development aid," said Cook.

A judge granted a new trial in the case that holds a gun manufacturer responsible for the death of a 15-year-old Berkeley, Calif., boy, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Sept. 12.
The lawsuit, filed by Griffin Dix, the father of the victim, Kenzo Dix, holds Beretta U.S.A. liable for the death of his son. Kenzo was unintentionally shot to death by his best friend. |

Seven-year-old Robert Franklin didn't know he had a loaded gun in his backpack when he went to school that day.
When he discovered it, he did what police say every child should do: He alerted his teacher.
As a result, he was punished.
On Wednesday, Galveston police took steps to show the shy second-grader that even though his action got him banished from school for three days, they consider him a hero and hope other youngsters will, too. |
