"CHASTISING PRESIDENT BUSH for allowing the ban on assault weapons to lapse, Sen. Kerry charged in a speech on Sept. 10 that 'America's streets will not be safe because of a choice George Bush is making' ..."
"Strong words from the Democratic candidate. But now we read in the October issue of Outdoor Life that Mr. Kerry himself may have one of these nefarious firearms. Asked if he was a gun owner and, if so, what was his favorite gun, the man from Massachusetts said, 'My favorite gun is the M-16 that saved my life and that of my crew in Vietnam. I don't own one of those now, but one of my reminders of my service is a Communist Chinese assault rifle.'"

I agree that President Bush caved in to the National Rifle Association ["Gun Ban Advocates Fault Bush," Metro in Brief, Sept. 15], but it is disingenuous of Bryan Miller to hold up a MAC-10 submachine gun as an example of the weapons that will be on the streets because of the expiration of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994.
The MAC-10 is a fully automatic weapon. The 1994 ban related solely to semiautomatic weapons. The difference is critical. Automatic weapons continue to fire any rounds available via the magazine as long as the trigger is held down. Semiautomatic weapons fire one round per trigger pull. Automatic weapons fall under a set of laws dating to the 1930s.
Mr. Miller had a good point, and he had no need to cheat to make it. -------

"A BLIND man was jailed for eight years today for killing a deaf man by slashing his throat because he was enraged by the noise coming from his stereo and television."
"George Gerard Goeldner, 49, pleaded guilty in the Brisbane Supreme Court for the manslaughter of Francis John Butcher, 54, on January 4, 2002. Both men lived at the Aid For The Blind Complex at Fairfield on Brisbane's southside."
"Prosecutor Michael Byrne said the men's units were 20 metres apart and Goeldner had made numerous complaints to management about the noise from Mr Butcher's unit."
"Mr Byrne said Mr Butcher had been given head phones but wasn't using them because they were uncomfortable in the extreme summer heat." ... -------
But at least he didn't use an evil gun! |

"Activists of the Hindu radical organisation Bajrang Dal in a Madhya Pradesh town are graduating from canes as weapons of self-defence to guns and rifles, perhaps keeping pace with the changing times." ...
"Though the Bajrang Dal is flouting rules by imparting firearms training to its cadres, the district administration and police in Vidisha said they had not received any such reports."
"'I am not aware of such training,' Vidisha police chief R.P. Shrivastava told IANS. Added another police official: 'Rules are being flouted in the training. A person who has a licensed pistol, rifle or gun cannot give it or lend it to another person even for a second or firing one shot.'" -------
So you can't get a licence unless you are trained, but getting training is illegal?!?

"THE Council of Traditional Leaders has requested the Ministry of Home Affairs to consider providing guns to village authorities for self-defence."
"Government is expected to respond to the request by tomorrow."
"The request is one of the issues being discussed at the Council's seventh annual meeting, which opened in the capital yesterday."
"Traditional leaders feel that in view of rising crime in the country they need guns to protect themselves."
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is also expected to give traditional leaders feedback this week on whether Government will accord traditional leaders VIP status, which would give them State protection." ... -------
So unless you are a VIP the state won't protect you? An interesting admission of a policy that has been obvious for years. |

"A GUNMAN who held police at bay for 25 hours owned seven firearms despite being refused a gun licence in three states."
"Keen hunter Damir 'Damien' Horvat claimed he killed people for a living and dreamed of walking into a police station armed with a gun."
"Horvat, who yesterday pleaded guilty to 17 charges, including assaults and weapons offences, had a cache of illegal guns, including a homemade pistol he boasted only took seconds to make."
"He admitted he had been refused a firearms licence in three states, but said he was able to get guns 'all over the place'."
"During the marathon stand-off at a Craigieburn service station on June 13, he had two loaded guns, including an M1 Carbine military rifle with a bayonet attached." ... -------
But guns are banned in Australia! And he'd been turned down for a licence in 3 states! And he fantasized about killing cops! I think we need stricter laws! /sarcasm |

Toronto police yesterday were looking for a loaded handgun, missing after an early morning home invasion in Scarborough.
Police said three armed men broke into an apartment at 4 a.m. on Pell Street where they pistol-whipped the man inside. He was able to escape and call police. Three men were arrested and police recovered jewellery taken from the apartment.
Prior to the arrests, police believe the assailants threw a handgun from their car near Kingston and Fallingbrook Roads.
Police were also looking for a cream-coloured SUV, seen in the area at the time. -------
Why don't they just look the gun up in their $2,000,000,000.00 gun registration system? |

"A MAN, believed to be a manager at Delport Farm near Harare, has been arrested after being found in possession of four guns and several rounds of ammunition at the farm."
"Simon Zungwani Maplanga was picked up on Sunday afternoon at the farm, which is near Epworth, after a tip-off from members of the public."
"He is still in custody and is expected to appear in court soon facing charges under the Firearms Act."
"Police said Maplanga failed to produce the licences for all the firearms when he was arrested." ... -------
This in a country where farmers are routinely murdered by squatters and the police remain unable (unwilling?) to do anything about it. |

RCMP are saying it is fortunate no one was injured after shots were fired at traffic travelling along the Trans-Canada Highway west of Calgary.
Sgt. Mike McTaggart of Cochrane RCMP says shots from a rifle hit a Greyhound Bus, a pick-up truck and a holiday trailer on Saturday and Sunday.
He says the vehicles were hit on the highway southwest of Cochrane on the stretch near the overpass for Jumping Pond Road.
McTaggart says police believe the shots were fired from south of the Trans-Canada across the highway, not from the overpass.
Police are searching for three teens, aged 14 and 15, whom they believe may have information about the incident.
McTaggart says it's believed the shots were fired randomly. -------
But why didn't your wonderful gun registration system prevent this? |
