The US state of Ohio has predicted the outcome of nearly every presidential election in the last century.
And with just 44 days until the election, Ohio remains the ultimate bellwether when it comes to American politics.
Opinion polls show the race in Ohio is very close, with some putting Republican John McCain in the lead and others showing Democrat Barack Obama out in front.
The economy is the number one issue with voters in Ohio, but some businesses are still doing a roaring trade, despite the financial upheaval buffeting much of the nation. |

Most Americans believe in a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Polls clearly show that the plurality of citizens are okay with abortion until the fetus is viable but after that they should receive the same treatment as citizens outside the womb. These polls also clearly state that the plurality of voters want control over their childrens education and their retirement. The vast majority of people even believe its not only a constitutional right, but a G-d given right, to own guns for self defense. The Democratic party will lose, yet again, because they nominated another candidate who votes at the far edge of the political spectrum. |

As a young lawyer more than 20 years ago, Stephen Halbrook was published in the Vermont Law Review.
Saturday afternoon, he was in the Green Mountain State to promote his latest book, "The Founders' Second Amendment: Origins of the Right to Bear Arms."
At the Barre Fish and Game Club, standing among an assortment of game heads, with an occasional gunshot sounding in the background, Halbrook spoke of his law career that has focused on upholding the second amendment of the United States Constitution the people's right to bear arms. |

The U.S. House of Representatives last week passed a bill restoring the Second Amendment right of gun ownership to citizens of the District of Columbia.
Approved by a vote of 266 - 152, the National Capital Security and Safety Act (H.R. 6842), requires the District of Columbia to revise its firearms laws to comply with the Supreme Court's decision in the case of District of Columbia v. Heller, which declared D.C.'s 32-year-old handgun ban an unconstitutional violation of the Second Amendment. |

The pro-gun majority in the US House of Representatives has moved to compel the nation's capital to broaden the rights of its residents to buy and own firearms, including semi-automatic weapons.
Critics, led by the District of Columbia's sole delegate to Congress, has slammed the action, a report in The Boston Globe says. They said the vote tramples on the District's right to govern itself and could endanger residents and political dignitaries in the city, the report notes. But the National Rifle Association-backed Bill passed easily, 266 to 152, with supporters saying they were determined to give DC residents the same Second Amendment right of self-defence that has been available to other Americans. |

Guns
1: "My position on firearms has always been that our Constitution provides us the right to keep and bear arms. I believe when citizens have firearms and the right to protect and defend their own homes and themselves, that they are safer overall."
2: "As a long-time gun owner, I believe the right to keep and bear arms should not be dependent on the city in which you live. The provisions of the U.S. Constitution apply to all Americans, regardless of geography." |

Two types of customers buy handguns from H&H Firearms Inc.: Those who have always been around them and those who have never held a gun in their lives. And the gun novice can obtain a firearm and the required permit to carry it just as easily as an expert, said Mark vanBurk, owner and president of H&H in Fort Wayne. |

ISLAMIC fundamentalists have offered weapons to Burma's opposition groups with which to fight the ruling military junta.
And the resistance groups - which feel they have been left high and dry by the international community - are seriously considering the offer.
Former students, who were forced to flee Rangoon after pro-democracy protests in 1988 were violently put down, are said to be discussing the offer in the Thai border town of Mae Sot.
They know accepting arms from a group linked to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq could polarise the West against them and damage their revolution.
But there are no other offers of weapons to fight the military regime, which is officially known as the State Peace Development Council. |

Police are hunting a gang who filmed themselves terrifying motorists with an AK47 rifle. The yobs - who recorded the disturbing footage on mobile phone and posted it on YouTube - are seen laughing as one screams: "I kill you all!" The clip, posted by someone with the user name fittysmiffy, takes place in a country road lined with luxury houses. The 55-second video - said to have been taken in High Wycombe, Bucks - was spotted after YouTube vowed to ban videos featuring weapons. The Google-owned site introduced the ban for the UK only amid widespread unease about gang violence on Britain's streets.
SUBMITTER'S QUERY: "In a country road lined with luxury houses," how many motorists can you "terrify" in 55 seconds?

Carmel Police hope to prevent tragedy by joining forces with Project Child-Safe and offering free gun locks to residents in the greater Mahopac-Carmel-Mahopac Falls area. Police Chief Michael Johnson announced the initiative this week after his department received a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice for the gun locks and accompanying literature. Johnson said law enforcement throughout the county was reminding gun owners to properly store firearms in the home "in order to prevent a loaded gun from falling into the hands of a child. Too many cases across the U.S. are reported each year when an innocent child is killed because he or she was inquisitive when observing a handgun or rifle inside a drawer or in a closet." |

Gerard Marco, of Fleming, a licensed and professional gunsmith for more than 35 years, likes to say common sense is not all that common when it comes to taking care of guns. With the advent of this fall's hunting season, it makes sense to tap into Marco's wealth of knowledge. I talked to him this week and he's agreed to offer advice to readers on my Outdoors blog. Beginning today, I will start accepting questions from readers for Marco's new, occasional online column, "Ask the Gun Guy." |

IPA Charities has contributed $3,000 to the Chicago Committee of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. This years reception fundraiser, held on July 17, 2008, helped to raise more than $30,000. Contributions will be used to elect candidates who support common sense gun laws, such as extending Brady background checks to all handgun sales and banning high capacity ammunition magazines that put police officers and citizens at risk. The Brady Campaign, and its affiliates, is the nations largest, non-partisan, grassroots organization leading the fight to prevent gun violence. The organization is devoted to creating an America free from gun violence, where all citizens are safe at home, at school, at work and in Americas communities. |

A Las Vegas judge has dismissed a firearms charge against entertainer Jerry Lewis. Las Vegas Justice Court Judge Karen Bennett-Haron dismissed the case Friday after attorneys agreed to let the 82-year-old comedian off without fines. Lewis was cited in July for attempting to carry an unloaded concealed weapon through McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas. He later said the weapon was a gift that he'd placed in a carry-on bag more than a year ago. He said he forgot it was in the bag until he was stopped at an airport security checkpoint. |

Joe Biden took on an even folksier tone than usual as he campaigned in rural southwest Virginia this afternoon. Though his focus was again on economic issues, he deviated from script to talk about an issue not often discussed by the Democrats: guns.
The Delaware senator predicted that Republicans would seek to sway voters by threatening that Obama would take away guns.
Barack Obama aint taking my shotguns, so don't buy that malarkey, he said. If he tries to fool with my Beretta, he's got a problem. --- Mr. Biden is sticking with the tired Democrat myth that the Second Amendment is about shooting at ducks, but not at corrupt politicians.

Mark Kirk is working to close the so-called fire sale loophole. He's introduced a bill to keep proven bad actors from selling lethal firearms to the highest bidder without so much as a background check. Kirk's leadership on this issue earned him the praise and endorsement of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Bloomberg said of Kirk: "The sad truth is that some members of Congress don't have the courage to stand up, and Mark Kirk has." I agree with Mayor Bloomberg, and I'm going to stand up for Mark Kirk on Election Day; we cannot afford to lose him. |

Among the assault rifles and razor-sharp throwing stars for sale at a recent Freeman Coliseum gun show, fierce loyalty to John McCain also was on display. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, along with its California Chapters, has endorsed Bill Durston for election to Congress from Californias Third Congressional District. He is running against Congressman Dan Lungren. "As a Marine veteran, emergency room physician and injury prevention expert, Bill Durston will fight for common sense gun laws to protect families and communities from gun violence," said Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign. "Dan Lungren, on the other hand, has obstructed efforts to pass strong gun laws to make our neighborhoods safer. He even voted against restrictions on .50-caliber sniper rifles." |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
[The American Colonies were] all democratic governments, where the power is in the hands of the people and where there is not the least difficulty or jealousy about putting arms into the hands of every man in the country. [European countries should not] be ignorant of the strength and the force of such a form of government and how strenuously and almost wonderfully people living under one have sometimes exerted themselves in defence of their rights and liberties and how fatally it has ended with many a man and many a state who have entered into quarrels, wars and contests with them. George Mason, "Remarks on Annual Elections for the Fairfax Independent Company" in The Papers of George Mason, 1725-1792, ed Robert A. Rutland (Chapel Hill, 1970). |
