America is definitely not Europe, but we can find a number of parallels between European history and contemporary America. For example, weve previously written about the Italian Years of Lead as a possible template for urban unrest and low-level inter-tribal warfare in the United States. Another example of how things might play out in the United States is the Spanish Civil War.

That cant be right, thought I, but another count yielded the same sums. Just the first 18 years of this century have coughed up 50 new centerfire rifle cartridges. During the entire 20th century, from the debut of the Mannlicher-Schoenauer rifle to the Remington 700 in .300 Ultra Mag, there were 80 new cartridges.

In recent years, the firearms industry has changed drastically and one company that has evolved to meet 21st century demands the most is Mossberg. For years, Mossberg has been known for affordable .22 LR rifles and its excellent Mossberg 500 shotgun. Mossberg has carved itself a niche for centerfire boltaction rifles, AR-15 rifles and most recently the company has entered the most active segment of the marketdefensive pistols. Recently, I tested seven concealed-carry pistols for women and was quite impressed with Mossbergs re-entry into the pistol market.

If you have a lightweight .38 Special or .357 Magnum revolver, you know that shooting full-power ammunition can sometimes be unpleasant or downright painful. I know this all too well. I have two Smith & Wesson J-frame revolvers with lightweight scandium/aluminum frames chambered in .357 Magnum. Firing a full-powered .357 Magnum in these gun is a new experience in pain. Even standard .38 Special ammo can be painful because the guns are so light.

The elections for the United States Senate and the White House are both drawing a great deal of attention, especially with the vacancy now present on the Supreme Court. But this is no reason to ignore gubernatorial races which are taking place in a number of states across the country. One of those states is Missouri, where Mike Parson is running for a term in his own right. Parsons was elected Lieutenant Governor in 2016, but took over the top office after Eric Greitens resigned following a dubious indictment.

Presidential hopeful Joe Biden claimed in a recent tweet that bans on semi-automatic firearms, mislabeled as assault weapons, save lives, despite the fact that research has proven the contrary. 26 years ago today, the Senate passed 10-year bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazinesit was an effort I was proud to champion. These bans saved lives, and Congress should have never let them expire. As president, Ill take on the [National Rifle Association] and well ban them once again, read Bidens tweet.

Although Randys Hunting Center has a decent inventory currently, Brown said you cant base your thoughts of the market on his inventory levels, because other companies are struggling.

As part of the urban deer management program, Oak Mountain State Park will offer bow hunting beginning in November and running through early February. Officials say consultation with state wildlife biologists and consideration of scientific research data revealed the ongoing need to manage the Oak Mountain State Park herd. Overpopulation of deer causes negative consequences for wildflowers, trees and shrubs in the park, which in turn depletes the food supply for small mammals and nesting birds.

There once was a time when the far left pretended that it was deeply offended by money being involved in politics. They still spent millions to win elections, with Democrat presidential candidates regularly outspending their Republican opponents. The last time a Republican candidate for President outspent his rival was in 2000. But failed presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg is putting the final nail in the coffin of the lie that Democrats are opposed to money in politics.

In a lot of ways, the 1911 is a terrible carry gun. Its not the gun for newbies or casuals and frankly is outclassed by a lot of other pistols in almost every single respect. However, the pistol is not entirely without virtuesIF, that is, youre willing to put up with the shortcomings. If its what you had to work with, you could do a lot worse.

A black bear hunting season for 2021 in Jefferson County is one step closer to reality, but for those concerned about bears or hunters here, they probably need not worry about either at this point. If management goals are met, locals may never have to fret about the fate of neighborhood bruins. Approval of the hunting season for 2021 has been a long process, and it is still pending one more public comment period. Earlier this month the state Conservation Commission approved the framework of a season, and that information will be posted in the public record for comments to be collected from Oct. 16 through Nov. 14.

There arent many certainties in this world, but one of them is that any and every conversation about mountain hunting rifles ends up boiling down to weight. Slightly abnormal and perhaps brain-damaged hunters, like myself, who take to the high country on a regular basis for a couple weeks at a time, living out of their packs, are very particular about what they put in those packs. Youll hear of toothbrushes being cut in half, meticulous packing and unpacking. Being one of them, I can tell you that sheep hunters are the worst. Our affinity for things that dont weigh that much is especially apparent in our choices of rifles.

Day after day strenuous exertion can not only take a physical toll on sporting dogs, but also a mental one, too. As the dogs body feels the effects of hard work, their mental sharpness may begin to soften as well. Tired, unfocused pointing dogs bump birds while retrievers are sluggish when running blind retrieves. Some of their fatigue goes beyond conditioning and training. The daily grind can cause a buildup of free radicals, a byproduct of strenuous activity.
