WILLIAMSBURG - "It could have been a scene from an action movie:"
"The morning quiet of a neighborhood is torn by a throbbing, chunka-chunka wall of sound. A small helicopter appears over the houses and lands in a vacant lot. A man darts out from behind a tree to hop in as the helicopter lifts off the ground."
"Then comes the crack of an assault rifle [sic -- AR15]. A man stands in the front door of his home shooting at what he thinks is a terrorist rendezvous."

"A 59-year-old Grand Haven man was convicted by a federal jury in Grand Rapids Thursday for possession of a machine gun, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice."
"Keith W. Nass, 1623 Colfax St., was convicted by a federal jury on two charges stemming from his possession of an unregistered Frankfort Arsenal, AR-15 type machine gun. The jury acquitted Nass on three counts stemming from his alleged possession of an unregistered Uzi machine gun pistol with a silencer."
"Nass was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal Service immediately following Thursday's conviction."
"The charges carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and/or fines from $10,000 to $250,000."
Nothing in this report mentions anything about criminal intent -- just enforcement of the unconstitutional ban on machineguns.
"Grand Haven Department of Public Safety officials turned over information to federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to investigate the case, and prosecutors sought the federal indictment because a conviction would prohibit Nass from ever again possessing a gun." |

"Long after TV viewers found out who shot J.R., a group of gun-loving Republicans gathered at Southfork Ranch on Saturday to get actor Charlton Heston's take on another burning question: Who will be the next Texas senator?"
"The longtime gun activist and National Rifle Association president threw his weight behind Texas Attorney General John Cornyn at a breakfast fund-raiser that drew about 140 people to J.R. Ewing's 'Oil Baron's Ballroom,' situated on a green pasture a short ways from the infamous white house featured in the 1980s TV soap opera."
"Heston, who parted the Red Sea as Moses in 'The Ten Commandments,' is the latest high-profile supporter to help raise money for Cornyn in a tight race against former two-term Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk."
" 'I came to Texas to see that John Cornyn is elected to the United States Senate,' Heston said in a 50-second speech interrupted twice by applause. He praised Cornyn's support of the Second Amendment, the president and the military."
RELATED NEWS: Cornyn supports more checks at gun shows:
"In the race to elect Texas' next senator, it's the moderate Democrat who says unlicensed sellers at gun shows don't need to run background checks on buyers, and the conservative Republican who says a law should be passed to give them more scrutiny."

NOTE: Site username: Newslinks Site password: Newslinks Must have cookies turned on for it to work. ------- FULL, Unedited TEXT BELOW... ------- Re "No Guns in Flight," by Dave Barger, the president of JetBlue Airways (Op-Ed, Sept. 17):
With due respect to Mr. Barger, his desk is not in danger of being hijacked, flown into a building or shot down by one of our own military jets. My "desk" is.
As an airline captain, I, most of my colleagues, the majority of the American public and most law enforcement groups think that the safest way to prevent future tragedies is to have pilots, trained and armed, on the flight deck.
Are there problems to be worked out? Not insurmountable ones. Many of us are former military pilots, familiar with the safe use of firearms; others can be trained.
I agree with Mr. Barger that "the arguments against guns in the cockpit are overwhelming." But the arguments for guns are even more overwhelming.
The last thing I want to do is to carry a weapon to work, but it is the first thing that needs to be done to ensure that our flights return home safely.
We are the last line of defense. STEVE ABDU New Hampton, N.H., Sept. 17, 2002 |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
"Let us contemplate our forefathers, and posterity, and resolve to maintain the rights bequeathed to us from the former, for the sake of the latter. The necessity of the times, more than ever, calls for our utmost circumspection, deliberation, fortitude, and perseverance. Let us remember that `if we suffer tamely a lawless attack upon our liberty, we encourage it, and involve others in our doom.' It is a very serious consideration...that millions yet unborn may be the miserable sharers of the event." --Samuel Adams, speech in Boston, 1771 |
