AR: Bella Vista Council To Vote On Hunting, Franchise Fees

Anderson said some residents were upset last year because people were hunting from tree stands in empty lots next to their homes.

...

"That is not a safe thing," Farner said. "You've got too may people too close together to allow hunting in a place like this."

The penalty for hunting in Bella Vista will be a fine of up to $250, according to the proposed ordinance.

Another proposed ordinance that would prohibit the use of firearms in the city limits also comes with a maximum fine of $250 if violated. The only permissible uses of a firearm are in self defense, by law enforcement or military personnel, as part of public ceremonies or at firing ranges, according to the proposed ordinance.

The press piled into a hall near a pile of N.R.A. swag bags to watch Rudy stride into the ballroom.

Would the tough guy kowtow to the powerful lobby he once lambasted as extremist? Would he pull a Romney and pretend to be an avid hunter of small varmints?

Would he have an epiphany about the Second Amendment — the way he did about the First when he blew a gasket over that painting of the Madonna daubed with elephant dung — and reinterpret the Bill of Rights to suit his needs?

It is my opinion that we have to do what it takes to protect and preserve our U.S. Constitution as our forefathers intended us to do, especially the Second Amendment, which protects the rest of the Constitution.

Many servicemen and women have given their lives to assure we remain a free country. We must thank them and pray for them and their families. Sadly enough, these service people cannot do it alone; it takes all of us. One way we can all help is to be informed on what is being voted on in Congress: ...

A group of Western Kentucky University students have planned a protest next month to speak out against a campus policy banning guns.

An online group pushed for the protests nationally after the shootings at Virginia Tech that killed 33 people earlier this year.

One Western Kentucky University student says the "empty holster protest" is in support of allowing students licensed to carry guns to bring them to campus.

Fortunately, no one was hurt in an incident last week at Owens Elementary School, where authorities say a 12-year-old pointed a BB gun at, and threatened, a fellow student.

Limestone County school officials acted swiftly and appropriately after two students notified the staff of the incident the following day.

Officials charged the sixth-grade student with making a terrorist threat and he faces a likely yearlong expulsion for taking the firearm to school.

Ed.: So a sixth-grader with a BB gun is now a terrorist!? Does that mean we have to whisk him away to Guantanamo and water-board him until he leads us to the other BB terrorists in his cell?

Waukesha - As Gary Goessner, his buddy and their two pre-teen daughters shopped the Gander Mountain store hunting department in Waukesha Friday afternoon, the two girls were immediately drawn to a rifle and a youth shotgun.

But it wasn't the firepower of the guns that attracted the girls' attention. It was a color: Call it blaze pink.

WASHINGTON - Republican Rudy Giuliani sought to reassure the National Rifle Association of his support for a constitutional right to bear arms as rivals Fred Thompson, John McCain and Mike Huckabee contended the former New York mayor is no friend of gun owners.

The NRA‘s support is prized as the group blankets its 4 million members with ads, mailings and phone calls. Before the 2008 election, it hopes to increase its numbers.

Also last week, Rudy Giuliani attacked the offending MoveOn.org ad, which insulted Gen. David Petraeus. He told the National Rifle Association, "We passed a line that we should not allow any American political organization to pass."

What an irony. Here is Giuliani, the possible future president of the United States of America, trashing the spirit of the First Amendment, in front of the NRA, which elevates the Constitution's Second Amendment to sacred scripture. Just as a reminder, here are the exact words of the First Amendment, which all of us should see as sacred:

In the Democrat dream of dreams, one social conservative survives Super Duper Tuesday and wages a last-ditch effort to stop the pro-abortion, pro-gay-rights, pro-gun control Mr. Giuliani from walking off with the nomination of a party, whose base — especially in those states most likely to give it an Electoral College victory — is pro-life, pro-family and pro-Second Amendment.

Two six-guns strapped around his waist, a lever-action rifle in his hands and a shotgun leaning nearby, Elliott Thompson placed his right hand on the post next to him.

"The range is hot. The shooter is ready," intoned the range officer.

A buzzer sounded.

Thompson whipped the rifle to his shoulder, worked the lever and fired without hesitation.

But, aside from following gun laws and relying on low-tech tools such as trigger locks and gun safes — which are hardly foolproof — what can parents do?

Safety experts say parents with guns at home need to pay particular attention to making sure their children are safe, some even suggest serious parent-child discussions about gun safety just as they would about topics of sex, bullying and education.

A teenager who allegedly tried to rob a man at knifepoint is in the hospital today after the victim fended off the threat, took the knife and then stabbed his attacker in the upper torso.

Washington County authorities say the teenager is in fair condition at a local hospital.

The alleged attack happened at a grocery store parking lot in Bethany.

Andrew Cantwell told Washington County deputies that two men demanded his money at knifepoint.

Cantwell says the robbers fled after he fended them off and took the knife.

"...in the case of enormous tyranny and oppression, tis lawful to take arms even against supreme power; and that as government is a mere human invention for mutual advantage and security, it no longer imposes any obligation, either natural or moral, when once it ceases to have that tendency...."

"...the people still retain the right of resistance; since tis impossible, even in the most despotic governments, to deprive them of it. . . . . the cases, wherein resistance is lawful, must occur much oftener, and greater indulgence be given to the subjects to defend themselves by force of arms...."

In the most hypocritical speech of any presidential candidate so far, Rudy Giuliani told a National Rifle Association audience he no longer supports the tough gun-controls laws he once fought for as mayor of New York. Apparently that shameless denial of his past even embarrassed Giuliani, who interrupted his speech Friday to take a personal cell phone call from his wife. It was a bizarre moment, though not nearly as unsettling as watching a man who had once prided himself on his tough stance against urban gun violence now kissing up to the NRA.

Bullets are becoming more expensive and harder to come by for police departments in the region and across the nation. The reasons vary, police and munitions experts say. One factor is a widespread feeling that there is an ammunition shortage domestically due to worldwide demand and the need to supply the military in Iraq and Afghanistan. And spiralling costs for copper and other commodities used to make ammunition have led to higher prices. In response to rising costs and fears of shortages, many law enforcement agencies are buying more ammunition earlier and hoarding their caches.

With a seemingly endless string debates weve already endured having blurred the candidates positions in many in voters minds, the Republicans (and, in a taped message, Democratic contender Bill Richardson) faced a far sharper test today: a National Rifle Association forum. The appearance everyone was waiting for was the man who once implied the organization was composed of extremists Rudy Giuliani. But first, how did the others fare? Jim Geraghty at National Review says that Fred Thompson gave a just about flawless performance:

Some of the guns sharpshooter Annie Oakley once donated to raise money for the Spanish-American War effort are going to be auctioned next month in Maine. Firearms up for sale will include an engraved, gold-plated .38-55-caliber Marlin rifle now valued at between $150,000 and $250,000. "This was a firearm used by Annie Oakley," auctioneer James Julia said. "She was a real patriot, and she turned it in for the war effort to generate money for war bonds." Items on the block also include a Sharps carbine owned by a member of Confederate Gen. Jeb Stuart's cavalry. The gun is valued at $20,000 to $40,000. A three-day firearms and military auction is to be held at Julia's auction house in this central Maine town Oct. 8-10.

You could only cringe at witnessing Rudy Giuliani's appearance before the National Rifle Association yesterday, starting with the preposterous I-love-you-dear call he took from would-be First Lady Judi Nathan in the middle of his even more preposterous makeover on gun control. Giuliani's aides swore up and down afterward that Nathan's call was a genuine attempt, not put-up, not set up, by the Mrs. to reach her husband. My goodness, how was Nathan to know that Giuliani was speaking to an organization that might be pivotal to his White House ambitions?

Rudolph W. Giuliani appeared Friday before the National Rifle Association a group he once likened to extremists and defended his very vocal past advocacy of tougher gun laws while affirming the right of law-abiding citizens to bear arms. The appearance by Mr. Giuliani was perhaps his biggest test yet of how his liberal record on gun control and abortion as a New York City mayor would square with a core Republican constituency now that he is running for president. And he confronted his past directly, saying he faced different challenges taming crime in New York City a decade ago, while signaling that he opposes new restrictions on gun ownership.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear. ~ Marcus Tullius Cicero (42B.C)
