The Department of Veterans Affairs is prioritizing firearm safety as a way to prevent veteran suicides, arguing the method that veterans use should be a focus along with the underlying reasons that drive them to take their own lives.

Veterans continue to use firearms more than any other means of suicide. According to a VA report released earlier this month, firearms were used in 69.9% of veteran suicides in 2018 and 70.2% in 2019. That's higher than the rest of the U.S. population, in which firearms were used in about 50% of suicides.

A Missouri boy fatally shot an alleged thief with an arrow after catching the man trying to steal a tractor on a family friends property, authorities said Tuesday.

The unidentified juvenile, whose age has not been released, was walking toward a tree stand where he planned to hunt deer with a bow and arrows when he saw the suspected intruder stealing a lawn tractor and wood splitter from the property Friday afternoon, according to the Jefferson County Sheriffs Office.

The familys attorney said the young hunter warned the man several times to stop and was in fear of his safety as the accused thief came closer. The man apparently did not stop, so the boy released an arrow that fatally struck him, authorities said.

Florida Rep. Michele K. Rayner, D-70, filed a bill for the 2022 legislative session that would require retreat from law enforcement officers during situations where non-deadly force is threatened or used.

...

From the bill, A person may not use deadly forceif the person knows that he or she can avoid the necessity of using deadly force with complete safety by retreating.

Additionally, the law would remove provisions of the Florida Statutes that state persons who are using or threatening to use force do not have a duty to retreat before using deadly force in defense of persons or property.

Valdosta Police ruled the shooting of an armed man, Lyndon Williams, 25, self-defense after he followed another man home who was armed as well.

Williams followed the man, who was coming home from work, for several miles and confronted him while allegedly producing a firearm once arriving at his home, investigators said.

The man, according to VPD, was able to obtain his own firearm, shooting and killing Williams in self-defense.

No charges will be filed against the man who was followed home.

State and local governments have long had the right to tailor firearm regulations to their own judgments about how best to protect public health and safety, the ABA told the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday.

In an amicus brief filed in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen, the ABA noted that governments consider population density, access to first responders and other characteristics of their communities when creating concealed-carry regulations. Governments also weigh potential risks, including whether minor incidents could escalate into life-threatening situations and whether criminals and other people who should not have guns could gain increased access to them.

President Joe Biden last week withdrew his nomination of prominent gun control activist David Chipman to head the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Bidens move came after months of bipartisan concern over Chipmans advocacy of severely restrictive gun control measures, his controversial statements appearing to mock new gun owners, and allegations of racist conduct during his time as an ATF agent.

You can read about how toxic masculinity fuels our American gun culture in many left-wing objections to gun ownership. But over the past two years, it seems women have broken through the glass ceiling of gun ownership.

The 2021 National Firearms Survey, courtesy of Harvard researcher Deborah Azrael and Northeastern Universitys Matthew Miller, determined that roughly 3.5 million first-time gun owners since January 2019 are women, compared to 4 million men.

During a CNN town hall meeting in late July, President Joe Biden (D) said he wants to outlaw Americas most-popular handgun: the 9 mm semi-automatic pistol.

The idea you need a weapon that can have the ability to fire 20, 30, 40, 50, 120 shots from that weapon, whether its a 9 mm pistol or whether its a rifle, is ridiculous, Biden said. Im continuing to push to eliminate the sale of those things.

Of course, Biden has pushed for a ban on semi-automatic rifles for some time. But many of Americas law-abiding gun owners, along with representatives from some pro-gun organizations, were surprised at Bidens audacity to say he also wants to ban 9 mm pistols.

ACLU Thinks the Second Amendment Is a Threat to the First Amendment

In the press release announcing the brief, the ACLU averred that "restrictions on guns in public spaces are appropriate to make public spaces safe for democratic participation, including First Amendment activity such as assembly, association, and speech." In other words, the ACLU has decided that exercising one's Second Amendment rights may run counter to someone else's First Amendment rights, and is favoring the latter over the former. As evidence, the ACLU cites a case from last summer in which a Black Lives Matter rally in Florida was disrupted when a counter-protesterwho also happened to be a concealed-carry license-holderpulled out a handgun and threatened some marchers.

On Sunday night, CNN put on a special from its CNN Films unit titled The Price of Freedom, which was a nasty dig at the National Rifle Association. The liberal news network gave the kind of slanted presentation one would expect, with the addition of swelling, dramatic music. Most of the soundbites were harsh critics of the NRA who were given a forum to complain that the pro-gun group has been too successful in pushing its agenda.

The Second Amendment Foundation has launched a powerful new message to gun owners across the country, warning them, If Joe Biden can force a needle in your arm, he can take your gun.

The 60-second TV message includes a clip of Biden telling America, This is not about freedom or personal choice in his push for all Americans to get vaccinated, even if they have personal, religious or health concerns. SAF reasons that if Bidena career anti-gunnercan get away with issuing such a mandate without Congressional approval, he could make the same declaration about surrendering Second Amendment rights.

I am outraged that House Democrats are once again trying to conceal unconstitutional red flag laws in the NDAA that could be used to unjustly deprive American servicemembers of their Second Amendment rights, said Rep. Murphy. Our national defense bill is a key component of ensuring that our Armed Forces and their families have the resources they need, and it is reprehensible that Democrats are trying to use the NDAA to subvert our veterans right to possess a firearm.

Despite some calls urging them not to, the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners in a 7-4 vote along party lines approved a resolution to declare gun violence a public health crisis.

The county board passed the resolution Tuesday, Sept. 21, that said it was in the best interests of the residents for the commission to support the existing collaborations to establish an evidence-based public health response to address the underlying social, economic, and systemic factors that promote gun violence.

Does the Second Amendment apply to 1820-year-olds? Back in July, a federal appeals court said yes. But now, the court has taken back its earlier ruling.

The caseHirschfeld v. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosivessaw two young adults challenging a federal law that treats 1820-year-olds like children, banning federally licensed firearms dealers from selling handguns or handgun ammunition to them.

This decades-old rule is unconstitutional, said judges with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit in July.

Orange County Fair & Event Center officials have decided to back off on attempts to soften the economic blow of a state Senate bill that, if signed into law by the governor, would end gun shows at the O.C. fairgrounds.

Board members earlier this month considered sending a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom urging him to veto SB 264, a piece of legislation intended to enact a statewide ban on the sales of guns and ammunition on state-owned properties but was later amended to apply only to the Costa Mesa fairgrounds.

That property has hosted gun shows operated by Utah-based Crossroads of the West for more than 25 years, earning millions for the 32nd District Agricultural Assn. and drawing up to 70,000 visitors annually.

Attorney General William Tong today joined a coalition of 18 state attorneys general in filing an amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court defending New Yorks law regulating when individuals may obtain a license to carry firearms in public.

The coalition argues that the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution does not provide Americans with an unrestricted right to carry loaded firearms in virtually all public places, but instead, in keeping with centuries of tradition, allows states to enact policies regulating public carry that are tailored to local public safety concerns and needs.

Rep. Chip Roy (TX-21) issued the following statement Thursday after voting against the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA):

Today, I voted against the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for FY22.

...

This legislation, backed by both Republican and Democrat leadership, completely loses sight of the NDAAs core focus to strengthen our national security. This unacceptable bill undermines servicemembers second amendment rights, creates an Office of Countering Extremism with the power to expel troops who engage in extremist activities, while continuing to fund critical race theory training, promote the radical Green New Deal agenda, and fails to hold our Pentagon leaders accountable for the failure in Afghanistan.

Democrats are renewing their push for gun reform, but this time the effort has more to do with the pandemic than politics.

From the steps of the state Capitol, Democrats called for two things again: universal background checks and extreme risk protection orders, also known as red flag laws.

Lawmakers said those gun safety proposals aren't conservative or liberal. Rather, the proposals are in the interest of all Wisconsinites.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
False is the idea of utility that sacrifices a thousand real advantages for one imaginary or trifling inconvenience; that would take fire from men because it burns, and water because one may drown in it; that has no remedy for evils except destruction. The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crime. Cesare Beccaria, quoted by Thomas Jefferson
