The federal court's ruling came just one day after the NRA and the Second Amendment Foundation jointly filed a motion to halt the seizures of firearms from private citizens who are not breaking the law. The groups described the action by the New Orleans Police Department as "arbitrary," "without warrant or probable cause," and thus unconstitutional.

"(CNSNews.com) - Violent and property crime rates in 2004 remained at their lowest levels since the Bureau of Justice Statistics started keeping track in 1973,. . ." "The report also said the use of firearms in crimes has declined substantially over the last 10 years."
"Only 6 percent of violent incidents in 2004 involved the use of a firearm in the commission of a crime, down from 11 percent in 1993. . ."
"The key to fighting gun crime is through aggressive enforcement of the nation's existing gun laws; and through programs like President Bush's Project Safe Neighborhoods, we are keeping gun crimes down," Gonzales said."' - - - - [Submitters note: Yet no mention on how armed self defense has helped lower these numbers.] |

The flood waters have not receded yet -- indeed they have been augmented -- but the devastation that is much of New Orleans has attracted a coven of planners, visionaries, utopians, reformers and moral uplifters to dream at the Big Easy's corpse. They don't seek to pick the city's bones clean, but to feast on funded dreams during the reconstruction.

When I read Jeff Mankoff's editorial impugning any (appropriate) reverence for our Constitution ("Putting an end to Constitution worship," 9/22), honestly, I was disappointed both by Mankoff's failure to appreciate the Constitution's rightful significance and the possibility that he might be representative of a sizable, ill-informed constituency of Americans. If he does indeed speak for anyone other than sixth-year Ph.D. students in misunderstanding the Constitution as a "crucial [piece] of American history," the state of citizenship in this country is in serious trouble.

Guns are good and terrible things. Whether they are good or terrible depends on whether the hands that wield them are good or evil. Guns can, of course, be a lot of fun if they're used for target shooting or hunting. They can also be and often are lifesavers in the event of a threat. Since self-defense may be the single most basic of all the human rights, that's a whole lot of good going on! The obvious good of protecting yourself and your loved ones from harm is so integral to all of us and to society as a whole that even the drastic action of killing another human being can be excused under the law as "justifiable" homicide, or, more simply and accurately, "self-defense." |

Gun control laws are advanced by the "Progressives", because of several undisclosed reasons:
1) A populace that can't defend itself is subject to easy control by an out of control government.
2) They are "stuck on stupid" and naive enough to think their coddled criminals will not carry guns.
3) Many of them are "elites" that are isolated from the "real" world and hide behind "security blankets" that keeps them from being subject to the normal day to day criminal world.

SAN DIEGO I was in the arms of my son the first time I fired a gun. How Roman and I arrived at that moment is something I'll still be trying to figure out probably 'til the day I die. I have my reasons for hating guns. Several years ago, a friend's little girl lost her eye in a BB gun accident. A couple years after that, our neighbor across the street - a university professor - was killed, along with two of his colleagues, when a graduate student shot them at San Diego State University.

Detroit had more justifiable homicides than any of the 10 biggest cities in 1999-2003. Now a state House bill seeks to expand citizens' rights to use deadly force in self defense.
The bill's purpose is to clarify the rights of self-defense and to provide immunity from prosecution or civil lawsuit. It would allow a citizen to use force he or she reasonably believes necessary -- including fatal force -- against someone breaking into their home or occupied vehicle.
Law-abiding citizens in a public place could stand their ground and resist a threat of serious injury.

Your editorial about the new Florida law saying you can defend your life when someone breaks into your house or car was out of line.
Well, considering that The Blade is the liberal institution pushing a liberal agenda, I guess that this editorial was just another attack on the rights of law-abiding people of Michigan and Ohio to defend themselves from the bad guys.

Next Saturday it will become legal, in Florida, to use force in order to protect oneself from attackers. In the past, it was illegal in Florida to use force on force when facing an attacker, unless those facing attack first attempted to flee.
The previous policy left those being attacked at a decided disadvantage to their attackers. The Sun-Sentinel reports that it will soon be legal to employ deadly force in self-defense.

Do you actually believe, as per your editorial on Friday (A Duty to Retreat, 09/23/2005), that decent, law-abiding people should just retreat in the face of an attack by the criminals? And why? Because the “poor” criminal might get hurt? Give me a break. Criminals don’t deserve the back of a retreating victim; they deserve a smoking Colt .45! |

Last week, the capital Sanaa saw the protest against the firearms, demanding their ban in the main cities and the issuance of the firearms carrying and possession control that has been collecting dust in the parliament for several years. It is good that the firearms law turns into a public issue. Of course, public participation in all the issues is very much needed and I have been really happy when I heard that some NGOs were going to run a protest against firearms chaos in the country.
