As we reported last week, the U.S. House Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security recently held a hearing on H.R. 822, the "National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011." This critically important bill, introduced earlier this year by Congressmen Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) and Heath Shuler (D-N.C.) and cosponsored by more than 240 of their colleagues, would enable millions of permit holders to exercise their right to self-defense while traveling outside their home states. |

New York police can shoot down an airplane if needed, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told the CBS News program "60 Minutes."
"In an extreme situation, we would have some means to take down a plane," Kelly said on Sunday night's broadcast.
"I prefer not to get into the details but obviously this would be in a very extreme situation."
The New York Police Department built up extensive counterterrorism and intelligence divisions after the attacks of September 11, 2001, saying it could not rely on the federal government alone for protection from an attack.
Submitter's note: Why does Barney Fife *NEED* to be able to "take down a plane"? And what would the power mad consider "an extreme situation"?
Ed.: Anecdotally, the comments are ~100% against this. Seriously, this is a new level of insanity. |
U.S. Government Used Taxpayer Funds to Buy, Sell Weapons During 'Fast and Furious,' Documents Show

Not only did U.S. officials approve, allow and assist in the sale of more than 2,000 guns to the Sinaloa cartel -- the federal government used taxpayer money to buy semi-automatic weapons, sold them to criminals and then watched as the guns disappeared. This disclosure, revealed in documents obtained by Fox News, could undermine the Department of Justice's previous defense that Operation Fast and Furious was a "botched" operation where agents simply "lost track" of weapons as they were transferred from one illegal buyer to another. Instead, it heightens the culpability of the federal government as Mexico, according to sources, has opened two criminal investigations into the operation that flooded their country with illegal weapons.

An innovative anti-gun violence program in New York's capital city may come to an end despite its successes -- another victim of the recession and tightening state budgets. For the past year a program called SNUG -- "guns" spelled backwards -- has been up and running in Albany. It takes the approach that gun violence is a public health crisis, not necessarily a law enforcement matter. |

Early Monday morning, a 47-year-old man became the second burglary suspect to die at the hands of his victim in the past week.
...
The property owner told police that he ordered the intruder not to move, but the intruder started coming toward him. Police did not identify the property owner.
"In fear for his safety, the victim fired a shot at the suspect, striking him in the shoulder," according to a St. Louis Police Department summary of the shooting.
The man died at a hospital.
No charges have been filed against the property owner. Katie O'Sullivan, a police department spokeswoman, said police believe the shooting appears to be justified. |

Take this whopper from Dennis Hennigans latest email blast last week referring to H.R. 822, which would require CCW permit reciprocity between states:
On Tuesday September 13th, a U.S. House Sub-Committee will hear testimony on gun lobby legislation, H.R. 822 which would force your state to allow dangerous individuals from out of state to carry loaded guns in your community. (Emphasis added)
Yet again, Dennis Hennigan is damn well aware that this legislation applies only to those individuals who have obtained a permit by jumping through hoops and submitting themselves to the above mentioned background checks and look-sees from the state and feds in order to obtain their permits. |

Apparently the final curriculum for an optional class on firearms safety to be taught in Virginia public schools has been approved and it has some serious flaws.
I would give it at most a grade of D.
For starters in talking about firearms safety, it talks about the assassinations of Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King, Jr.!!
What does the targeted murder of a political figure have to do with gun safety?
That would be like a drivers education class talking about how car bombs are used by terrorists to blow up innocent men, women, and children! |

Now, licensed carriers can come on campus but must keep weapons in a privately owned, locked vehicle and may not carry a gun in parking lots during events that may take place there, such as star parties sponsored by Scobee Planetarium.
The district should not infringe on citizens' Second Amendment right to bear arms, but they should understand they might endanger everyone at the colleges by potentially arming car burglars who work our lots.
Even for the board, this total lack of perspective is appalling.
Ed.: Let law-abiding people carry everywhere on campus. Problem solved. |

In last weeks issue, one of your writers formulated an article on gun violencemore specifically, gun use on and around Temples campus. Not only did he or she suggest that we should not exercise our Second Amendment right to bear arms, but also that there is a more holistic approach to self-defense that students should be exercising. While I am certain that both political sides desire less gun violence, one cannot argue that it is a realistic expectation for a student in North Philadelphia to try to give an offender a peace sign when they are looking down the barrel of another firearm. |

The Second Amendment truly is the black sheep of the Bill of Rights.
Imagine traveling from your home to Massachusetts, and not being able to buy a newspaper or stay at a motel because youre from out of state. The ACLU would be up inwell, maybe not armsbut they would sure take issue with the violation of your First Amendment rights. When it comes to the Second Amendment, though, your right to keep and bear arms is often checked at the state line. And it hardly raises an eyebrow among civil libertarians. |

She shot and killed him, using the gun shed bought this year, Ashley said. She had feared that the protection order that was supposed to keep him away from her and their 7-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter would not be enough.

There is a lot of work being done to protect the rights guaranteed by the Second Amendment. But if you really want to win the war for our rights, forget calling your congressman or writing a check. The absolute best thing you can do is to teach a child how to shoot.
What we teach kids today will have a lasting impact for generations. If children are taught the safe handling of firearms and the fun associated with the shooting sports, they will protect all of our rights when their time comes to stand up. |

Legislation is pending in other states and it is possible that a similar bill could happen here in New Hampshire, especially after the override of Governor Lynch's veto of the "Deadly Force" bill. The NRA has shown enthusiastic support for Florida's legislation and similar legislation across the country, which is somewhat surprising as the NRA has generally been a proponent of firearm safety in the past. |

Zionsville attorney Guy Relford has become the unofficial enforcer of a new state law that took away communities' right to enact and enforce their own gun ordinances.
Relford, known colloquially as "the gun lawyer," has checked with dozens of communities to make sure they're complying with the law that went into effect July 1. And he's filing lawsuits against the ones that aren't.
He said he has received dozens of calls and emails from residents across the state who are concerned that their hometowns aren't taking their ordinances off the books.
"When people know these legal issues are out there," Relford said, "my phone definitely starts ringing." |

I support lawful and responsible gun ownership. A recent letter writers aspersion that lawful gun owners are Those wanting to arm everybody paint a scenario whereby we whip out a gun and shoot the bad guy before he shoot us is ludicrous.
Who suggested that? The use of the word whip is an innuendo that those supporting gun ownership are careless or rash. |

While Congressional and public attention is focused on Mondays revelation that taxpayer money was used to purchase several, AK-style firearms that were subsequently allowed to walk into the hands of suspected gun runners, there are two key details to this story that should not be overlooked.
First, according to Congressional sources, the case reported Monday about taxpayer money being used by an ATF agent working undercover to directly purchase guns is apparently not a Fast and Furious case but a separate case. More about that in a moment. |

When it comes to safety on college campuses, whom do you believe?University officials and local law enforcement agencies the people entrusted to keep the peace?
Or the National Rifle Association, a special-interest group seeking to put Idaho into its win column?
Earlier this year, 41 House members 40 Republicans and one Democrat took the NRAs side and passed a bill allowing concealed weapons on Idaho college campuses. The House-passed bill died in a Senate committee. |

He documented that report with this picture above.
On August 3, he sent an email formally requesting copies of any records related to any ban of firearms on any Town of Wise property that were in addition to those restrictions expressly authorized by Commonwealth statute.
He cited Virginia Freedom of Information Act ( 2.2 -3700 et seq.). He also, referred to Virginia Code 15.2-915 (prohibiting localities from adopting or enforcing such bans). |

The TU alerts and headlines reporting shootings off-campus have become all too familiar since I enrolled at Temple, but when I heard that a student shot back in retaliation, I was shocked and even more so, disturbed. The last thing we need is violence on top of violence, and carrying weapons is not the solution for a safer atmosphere.
On Sept. 5 around 2 a.m., a 15-year-old juvenile shot 21-year-old sophomore Robert Eells. The youth attempted to flee, but Eells, who was armed, shot the juvenile in the back, landing both parties in the hospital. Leading up to the shootings, the youth and one other teenager had attempted to rob Eells, who did not comply with their demands. |

Goddard believes that can change, without any need to take peoples guns away or rescind the Second Amendment, as the scare-mongers like to argue. Goddard himself continues to hunt, and he respects licensed use of guns with background checks required. He meets many National Rifle Association members who agree with him and says their leaders disseminate misinformation and fear because so much money is involved in weapons sales.
Goddard is working part time the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, lobbying Congress for better gun laws. He spends the rest of his time speaking at colleges, community gatherings, houses of worship, and local or national events. |

St. Clair County has sought the advice of a ballistics expert who has concluded that common ammunition rounds fired at the shooting range pose a lethal threat to aircraft that fly over the range. Other experts have further concluded that the location of the shooting range in the Accident Potential Zone to Scott Air Force Base places human lives on the ground at risk.
Ed.: Funny, the FAA thinks the both range and the planes are safe there, as does the city. |
