A judge has approved a request for city police to destroy about two dozen guns, one of which has been in the evidence room for 29 years. Some of the weapons were used to commit crimes, others for suicide and others are a mystery, such as two Glock handguns with consecutive serial numbers found in the Winnipesaukee River in April 2007. The court initially stalled the request from the Belknap County Attorneys Office, asking for more details such as docket numbers and the disposition of the criminal cases. The county also was required to try to contact any known rightful gun owners.

Six veteran Georgia professors are seeking an injunction to stop the states new law that allows licensed permit holders to carry concealed guns on certain areas of public college campuses, saying its dangerous to students and faculty and unconstitutional. The professors hope to overturn the controversial guidelines using a legal argument that the campus carry law usurps the University System of Georgias constitutional authority over its campuses. Their complaint was filed Monday in Fulton County Superior Court against Gov. Nathan Deal and Georgia Attorney Georgia Chris Carr.

Clarification about the carrying of concealed weapons into municipal recreation centers is part of a ruling from Kanawha County Circuit Judge James Stucky on a case the West Virginia Citizens Defense League filed against the City of Charleston. That ruling, issued last week, finds that individuals with a valid license to carry a concealed weapon may legally take their gun into a municipal recreation center that is not leased or used by the Board of Education for school activities, events or functions if it is securely stored.

Todays savvy shooting enthusiasts are looking for products that offer much more than those of a generation agomore powerful optics, more precise rifles capable of tighter groups at longer distances and, in general, more bang for the buck. Yet despite many advances in production methods, materials and accessories, the devices we use to move defensive pistols from Point A to Point B have remained essentially unchanged. Todays belt holsters may be made of thermo-molded polymer instead of leatherbut theyre still belt holsters.

The safe had recently been delivered and was in the garage of the home in Sterling Heights. Fire Chief Chris Martin said the children, who are 3 and 4 years old, apparently crawled inside the safe Sunday afternoon and it locked.

Instructions for the safe and the combination were inside the safe with them. It took about 12 minutes to get them out using a hydraulic spreader and saws.

The children were checked out at the scene and appeared to be OK. The children later toured the fire station, where they thanked their rescuers.

My colleague Helen Ubias was stunned when she went out last year and bought an AR-15 rifle in only seven minutes, including a background check.
