Most Swiss men carry out annual military service until the age of 40 and keep their automatic rifle at home, but incidents involving army rifles are rarely reported.
Shooting rampages are virtually unheard of in Switzerland, and there was palpable sense of shock even among Swiss journalists reporting on the incident.

Since the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, the Federal Aviation Administration and various politicians have tried to assure nervous travelers it is still safe to fly.
But the FAA's own data reveal that the security firms hired by airlines have a dismal track record of detecting weapons, some of which are far more bulky -- and deadly -- than the boxcutters and knives that hijackers used to commandeer four airplanes Sept 11. |

What they missed was a razor sharp, six inch military knife, a four inch non-folding carbon composite dagger, a four inch steel bladed folding knife and a concealed triangular bladed defense knife. ...
The entire arsenal had been placed in my suitcase in less than three minutes - most of it in plain sight - and got through. This, under intense security screening after the largest terrorist attack in U.S. history.

Canada's commercial airline pilots are fliers, not gunfighters, and should not carry firearms in their cockpits, says the country's largest pilots' union.
Despite a call from U.S. commercial pilots yesterday for a right to bear arms aloft, the 3,600-strong Air Canada Pilots Association is rejecting the idea of carrying guns on board their airplanes.
"In a word, no, it's not our position that Air Canada pilots be armed," says Peter Foster, the association's safety and security expert. |

Bush announced a short-term solution Thursday morning to help protect U.S. airports, as he works to implement longer-term security measures. Under Bush's plan, the National Guard troops will be trained by Federal Aviation Administration officials beginning next week.
He urged governors to call up National Guard units to protect airports. The long-term plan includes putting the federal government in charge of airport security. |

Bullets that can cause deadly damage to a human but not to an aircraft. The bullets are made to penetrate and expand only in the human body, and stay there.
Roscoe Stoker of RBCD Performance Plus Inc. said that their product is designed to be the most lethal ammunition possible. "(It) can't be sold to civilians," Stoker said.
RBCD Inc. is the only company in the United States making the ammunition. |

On a shooting range designed to simulate a jetliner cabin, two masked men jump from their seats and practice firing semiautomatic pistols without hitting anything but their paper and metal targets.
The men are air marshals and someday may need their sharpshooting skills to take out hijackers without hitting civilians. |
