"The idea of suing gun manufacturers for the criminal misuse of their lawfully manufactured products by third parties over whom they have no control is an obviously ridiculous misapplication of the law."

"Mr. Ehrlich [R-MD] voted in favor of H.R. 2037, which, among other things, would limit the vulnerability of firearms manufacturers to civil lawsuits."

"Maryland's Democrats and gun-control advocates denounced Mr. Ehrlich for being a conservative and for backing the 'gun industry protection act'."

"Both the car and the gun have the potential to be misused. But neither are inherently dangerous and any unlawful use to which they are put by their owners is certainly something neither the automaker nor the gun manufacturer can control. To suggest otherwise is a distortion of cause and effect, which would open the door to potentially limitless lawsuits affecting just about any consumer good one could think of."

ORIGINAL TITLE: "Officer Lashes Guns Policy As 'Disgrace' "
-------
"A senior officer has launched a savage attack on his own force's firearms policy after police took nearly an hour to arrive at a packed city centre pub where a man had opened fire with a shotgun."

"Regulars at the Prince Arthur made desperate 999 calls after a man burst into the pub on Wednesday night wielding a shotgun and terrorised customers before leaving and blasting away outside. It was 45 minutes before police arrived on the scene."

"Arthur Street residents last night begged police to act over drug-dealing in the area."

"The officer, who asked not to be named, branded the delay 'an absolute disgrace, predicting that sooner or later someone would bleed to death because of Gloucestershire Constabulary's policy."

The officer's tongue-lashing includes:
"Our firearms response is ridiculously slow - we simply do not attend quickly enough," he said. This wasn't the case here 10 years ago and it wouldn't happen in the Met.

"You have a situation where a member of the public is calling for help and, when firearms are involved, it can take two hours to attend.

"We have to have tactical weapons advice and various procedures before we are allowed to respond.

"I realise officer's safety is important but personal risk is part of the job and the safety of the public is paramount."

"Gov. Mark R. Warner has decided to allow concealed weapons in state parks."

"Following the advice of state Attorney General Jerry Kilgore, the governor overturned a decades-old regulation that barred gun owners with permits from carrying concealed handguns in Virginia's 34 state-owned parks."

" 'This is a big win for gun owners,' said Philip Van Cleave, the president of the Virginia Citizens Defense League."

"The battle now shifts to municipal parks."

"Van Cleave's group is challenging ordinances in several localities throughout the state, including Hampton and Isle of Wight County."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
