"What happened in New Orleans must not ever happen again!"

"It must be made clear that local, state, and federal officials do not have the right or authority to prohibit firearms possession or to confiscate legally owned firearms."

"Immediately after receiving reports of gun confiscations in New Orleans, the Firearms Coalition began working on an initiative to amend the emergency powers laws of all 50 states and at the federal level. These amendments would clearly and explicitly state that citizens may not be disarmed and guns may not be confiscated during times of crisis. We are also working to ensure that the language adopted includes reassertion of the inalienable right of self-defense ..." ...

"Sometimes, I become so wrapped up in my own little world, consisting in large part of fighting government efforts to undermine the civil liberties of law-abiding American citizens, that I fail to recognize steps governments are taking that are achieving great results in protecting us from the ravages of terrorism and Mother Nature."

"I therefore pause and give credit where credit is due. Herewith, some recently announced steps that federal, state and local governments are taking and for which they should receive kudos for boldly going where no government has before and, against all odds, struck mortal blows against the forces of evil." ...

"Last year, the warnings were dire."

"The Clinton Gun Ban expired on September 13, 2004, after months and months of shrill screams from gun ban extremists that the sunset would result in the reign of terror on American streets."

"California Sen. Dianne Feinstein warned if the ban sunsetted 'you can expect more incidents' such as the July 1, 1993, shootings at 101 California in which a gunman used two TEC-9 semiautomatic weapons on a rampage through the office tower." ...

"But contrary to this and other such warnings, the Washington Times is now reporting news that should forever sink what was left of the credibility of gun ban extremists in our nation." ...

"Douglas Wies, 32, of Fort Collins wore a mask and walked into the store ... He told Ron and Norma Trauernicht he had a gun, brandished something in his hand covered by a cloth and demanded money from the cash register." ...

"It was reasonable for Ron Trauernicht to believe that a lesser degree of force would have been inadequate to protect his wife and himself, Bernard said. It was also reasonable, by law, for him to conclude his business was being robbed by a man with a gun." ...

... "Earlier that morning, the reporters gathered in a pressroom at Camp Aguinaldo to explain the dire circumstances that drove them to start ARMED, a grassroots self-defense movement that has drawn worldwide attention, mostly because it so clearly breaks with the entrenched taboo against journalists carrying and using guns. Faced with seemingly intractable safety problems and the lack of government protection, the Filipino journalists have decided that they simply have to protect themselves. What is happening here could set a precedent in places like Colombia, Russia and Bangladesh, where attacks against the media also are common." ...

"Florida's new shoot-first law was a bad idea from the start -- and state lawmakers should revoke the law at their first opportunity. So don't blame the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence for warning visitors to stay calm if they become involved in a public confrontation after the law takes effect on Saturday." ...

"Although critics say that the law would create a wild-West mentality in Florida, that isn't likely. What is likely, police and prosecutors say, is that people involved in violent clashes ... now have another justification for killing. The most probable impact is that the law will give defense lawyers an additional argument to justify shootings that heretofore would have automatically been deemed unlawful." ...
