However, there exists within the Capitol a strong push for expanded background checks. This should be a real red flag (no pun intended) for gun owners. The natural erosion of our rights is inevitable once we start down the path of gun control. Gun confiscation in Germany, China, and European communist countries did not happen in one quick step; it happened over a period of time, one step at a time, with each small step moving closer and closer to the goal of gun confiscation. |

Dozens of Monroe County citizens came together at the West End Fire Hall to learn more about state firearm laws during Representative Jack Raders concealed carry seminar on Thursday.
In an effort to better inform gun owners of their rights and responsibilities, Rep. Rader invited Monroe County District Attorney David Christine, First Assistant District Attorney Michael Mancuso, Chief Detective Eric Kerchner, Sheriff Todd Martin, Corporal Dan Acosta and Detective Sgt. Wendy Bentzoni-Serfass to speak and answer questions at the crowded fire hall. |

The victim recognized one of the approaching men as an associate of a suspect who had beaten him up him back in January. That assault resulted in the victim being hospitalized.
As the three men approached, the victim felt threatened by them and their verbal taunts. He made his way toward his car.
The most aggressive suspect, age 29, apparently grabbed the 27-year-old victims shirt and punched him multiple times.
The victim was still able to retrieve his firearm from a compartment in the car. He fired the gun ending the assault around 9:15 P.M. |

Prior to the Gilroy shooting, Mountain View council members were already interested in drafting gun-safety measures. Last year, the city banned the sale of semiautomatic rifles to anyone under the age of 21. But the incident underscored the need for more action. Earlier this month the council unanimously agreed to have city staff quickly return with some ideas. |

On Sept. 3, Walmart announced its CEO's decision to pander to the vocal minority of Americans and enter the fight to restrict citizens' use of their constitutional right of self-defense.
Walmart was, however, very careful not to affect their bottom line any more than absolutely necessary as they virtue signaled with their politically correct foolishness.
Doug McMillion became Walmart's CEO in February 2014. Mr. McMillion is a very shrewd businessman. Walmart was for many years vilified by left wing politicians and the left wing media for destroying "small" business in small rural communities.
I believe Mr. McMillion is using this current political posturing to try and blunt this image and criticism. |

Success in the shooting sports, competition shooting, and hunting all starts with having a passion. Next comes the mind-boggling array of firearms, and dont forget all the accessories, ammunition, and cleaning and care products. Throw in the time spent actually practicing or getting out in the field and then the tweaking toward finer and finer results becomes the obsession. |

Various reports indicate that most gunfights occur at 7 yards or less, and my informal research seems to back this up. It is a certainty that these close-range encounters are the most dangerous. Consequently, we suggest that most of the defensive shooters practice be with these close-range attacks in mind. However, what happens if you become the exception to the rule? What happens if a threat presents itself at 25 yards? Can you handle it? |

On Sept. 12, former White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders tweeted: Democrats say we have guns in America because of corruption. No, we have guns because its our God-given right enshrined in the Constitution.
The tweet went viral and drew reactions from Americans who know a lot about their freedom and from those who know little or nothing. Some of these later comments mocked Sanders mention of God. |

Rock Island County activist Eliza Siep is all in favor of legislation that she believes will make Illinois communities safer by protecting Second Amendment rights.
I would stand for that, Siep told Rock Island Today of a push among some lawmakers in the county to have the area designated as a Second Amendment Sanctuary County. If people want guns in our state, in our counties and in our cities, I actually feel safer. When Im walking around the Walmart I would love to think that somebody would be carrying a concealed weapon legally and would be able to help out. When people have their firearms legally, theyre able to protect themselves and others if need be. |

There are estimated between 5 million and 10 million AR-15s in America. As of this writing, there have been 20 AR-15s used by school shooters. That is 0.0002 percent of AR-15s. You are worried about this? This is going to sound heartless but your child is more likely to be hit by lightning than be killed by a school shooter. It isnt callous, it is just math.
If you really want to understand the Second Amendment, read The Federalist Papers written by the real writers of the Constitution James Madison, Alexander Hamilton and John Jay in particular numbers 29 and 36. |

Canterbury would be the first permanent ATF director since 2015, but he ruffled feathers with some Republican senators during his July confirmation hearing. Several of the 12 Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee which must approve Canterbury before a full Senate vote have since expressed reservations with his nomination. With opposition expected from the 10 Democrats on the panel, Canterbury can't afford to lose Republican support.
A spokesperson for Sen. Mike Lee, a Utah Republican who sits on the panel, said Lee "does have concerns" about Canterbury's Second Amendment views and is "pleased his nomination has been delayed." |

In his Sept. 18 column, Dave Skinner once again missed the mark. With his all too common complaint about how the federal government cant do anything right, Mr. Skinner now targets firearm background checks. Rather than celebrate that background checks kept 181,000 firearms from being sold to criminals last year he lambasts the federal government for not prosecuting the offenders. |

Recent polls show that most Americans support the basic premise of disarming dangerous people through the use of so-called red-flag laws. This instinct is a sound one, but Americans should not overlook the very real hazards of poorly crafted red-flag laws, which can easily turn the Constitution on its head. |
