"The abrupt retirement announcement Tuesday by New Orleans Police Superintendent Eddie Compass was 'the right thing to do, but not enough,' said Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) founder Alan M. Gottlieb."

"'While the departure of Chief Compass may begin a healing process that needs to occur between the police and law-abiding gun owners whose firearms were arbitrarily seized in the days after Hurricane Katrina,' Gottlieb said, 'there are many unanswered questions about who actually issued the order to confiscate guns, and the public has a right to know. New Orleans police officers, visiting officers from other jurisdictions and peace officers in surrounding parishes didn't just collectively dream up that confiscation effort.'" ...

"In the wake of the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina, the law-abiding citizens of New Orleans were told they couldn't protect themselves from the criminals who wanted to exploit the situation. The deputy police chief of New Orleans made this comment on ABC News: 'Only law enforcement are allowed to have weapons.' He went on to say, 'No one will be able to be armed. We are going to take all the weapons.'"

"Now, luckily the people of New Orleans were saved by the National Rifle Association who filed a suit on Sept. 23." ...

"The debate over gun control is decades old, it is also going to continue to rage on for decades to come. For many who do not really take sides or think the debate is just another partisan political fight which does not effect them, there is a new shining example of how there is no escaping this debate."

"The issue of gun control does indeed affect all of us. It does not matter if you own no guns or 100 guns. Whether or not you are a member of the National Rifle Association or the type of person who would never feel comfortable owning a gun matters not. The real essence of the battle between gun control advocates and gun rights advocates is not over guns. In the end, it is all about the right for you and me to defend ourselves." ...

"Guns are good and terrible things. Whether they are good or terrible depends on whether the hands that wield them are good or evil. Guns can, of course, be a lot of fun if they're used for target shooting or hunting. They can also be and often are lifesavers in the event of a threat. Since self-defense may be the single most basic of all the human rights, that's a whole lot of good going on! The obvious good of protecting yourself and your loved ones from harm is so integral to all of us and to society as a whole that even the drastic action of killing another human being can be excused under the law as 'justifiable' homicide, or, more simply and accurately, 'self-defense.'" ...

... "Do you think at some point you could write a column on some of the basics of getting into the world of firearms? Specifically, I'm looking for tips on acquiring weapons for home defense and hunting. While I'm not a survivalist weirdo, I have no intention of waiting for any level of government to ride to the rescue, should bad times come along."

"Since I have been hit with numerous requests (mostly post-Katrina) from people looking for that first firearm, I am pleased to respond with a column on the topic. Since you used the word 'weapons' (plural) and spoke of 'getting into the world of firearms' (again plural) I have a number of recommendations for you. And here they are:" ...

"What made things really interesting during these drills was the Model 1911 I was using. Like the carbine, the pistol was stamped 'Rock River Arms.' I was already familiar with the firm's rifles, so I was running these drills to gain greater insight on what kind of pistol Rock River Arms (RRA) is capable of building. With .45 ACP empties peppering the snow, I was becoming more and more impressed by its performance."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom of Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any bands of regular troops that can be, on any pretense, raised in the United States. Noah Webster in "An Examination into the Leading Principles of the Federal Constitution," 1787, in Paul Ford, ed., Pamphlets on the Constitution of the United States, at p. 56 (New York, 1888).
