The Second Amendment Foundation today announced that it is supporting a lawsuit filed by an Oregon high school teacher against the Medford School District, in a case that could have statewide, if not national implications.
The teacher, identified as "Jane Doe" to protect her privacy, is licensed to carry a concealed firearm under Oregon state statute. She is fearful for her safety, and that of her students, because of threats she has reportedly received from her ex-husband, against whom she has a restraining order. School officials are refusing to allow her to bring her gun on campus, despite Oregon law which appears to allow it. |

LONDON (Reuters) - The law on "have-a-go heroes" is to be reviewed to give more protection to citizens who use reasonable force when intervening against suspected criminals, Justice Secretary Jack Straw said on Thursday. Straw -- who revealed he had personally weighed in against muggers and burglars four times -- is to ask officials to devise ways of giving people who are the victims of crime or who witness an offence the confidence to use reasonable force to stop and detain criminals. The issue of self-defence has often been in the headlines since farmer Tony Martin was jailed for manslaughter for shooting dead an intruder at his Norfolk home in 1999. Straw chased a burglar trying to break into a members' club in Blackburn and held him |

Denise Grier, who was wrongly ticketed by a DeKalb County police officer for having a lewd bumper sticker, poses in front of her car and the decal last March.
Denise Grier told the world that she was tired of the BUSHIT, but the controversy her bumper sticker stirred more than a year ago continues for the Athens woman who alleges a police officer wrongly ticketed her for a decal that she sees as a political statement.
The reg. nurse may see the end of the legal battle soon; both sides in a federal lawsuit have asked a judge to rule without sending the case to a jury.
In March 2006, DeKalb County police Sgt. R.S. Caviness stopped Grier's car and wrote her a $100 ticket for a sticker that read, "I'm Tired Of All The BUSHIT."

The National Rifle Association again proved why it has become a heavyweight in the political arena when it weighed in on a regulatory proposal to ban lead hunting ammunition in condor range.
The NRA had been providing documentation to the Fish and Game Commission on how the ban was expensive for hunters and how much of the science was flawed or misinformation. The organization then took the next step.
Judd Hanna, a California Fish and Game Commissioner, resigned earlier this month. This apparently happened after the NRA brought the pressure of nearly the entire Republican caucus in Sacramento to bear on Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who then asked Hanna to resign. |

Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., disagrees - and that's all it takes to stop a bill in the Senate.
His concern is that billions of dollars of new spending in the bill is not paid for by cuts in other programs.
And he says the bill does not pay for appeals by veterans or other Americans who feel they have been wrongly barred from buying a gun.
"As Congress prepares to raise the debt limit once again, it is not too much to ask politicians to do the job they were elected to do and make choices," Coburn said Wednesday, backed up by another pro-gun group, Gun Owners of America. "Veterans, or any other American, should not lose their Second Amendment rights if they have been unfairly tagged as having mental health concerns." |

"[Gotthard] had bruises on the side of his neck, his arms, his elbow, his shoulders, on his back, that were simply not consistent with Mr. Mette's version that he only struck him once," said Assistant County Attorney Tim Gallagher. Dubuque doctors testified the injuries were consistent with someone who had been stomped and kicked. But a doctor testifying for Mette's defense rejected the Dubuque findings. He said all those injuries could have come from Mette's single punch and the impact from falling on the sidewalk. |

No charges will be filed in the July 27 shooting death of a 25-year-old Fort Smith woman, according to Crawford County Prosecutor Marc McCune.
McCune said Thursday an investigation by the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office turned up no evidence to refute a claim of self-defense by Edna Higgins, 69, of Mountainburg.
Higgins said she shot Heather Dyanne Mizell with a .22-caliber rifle as Mizell threatened her with a hammer in the Mountainburg woman’s residence.
According to investigators, Mizell, who was married to but separated from Higgins’ grandson, Jimmie Mizell, was at Higgins’ house to pick up money Higgins had promised to give her to replace a tire on her vehicle. |

"I don’t think you need the Second Amendment to understand properly the ability to keep a gun," said Neily in his remarks, which opened the debate. “Your ability to own a particular object comes down to whether or not the Court has established ownership of that object to be a fundamental right on the one hand or a non-fundamental right on the other. Guns are just objects, like any other object."
Neily was co-counsel for the plaintiffs in the recent Parker v. District of Columbia case, which challenged the constitutionality of Washington, D.C.’s gun laws. In a landmark decision in favor of gun rights, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit struck down the ban on handguns in the Parker ruling last March. |

Accused St. John's gunman Omesh Hiraman only had to hand over cash to buy the muzzle-loading rifle he's accused of using to cause a terror scare on campus. The 22-year-old went to Dick's Sporting Goods in Poughkeepsie on Friday afternoon, threw down $179.99 and walked out with a Wolf 209 Magnum, cops said. He did not have to undergo a background check. He wasn't even asked for identification. The black-powder gun's firing system qualifies the weapon as an antique, so it's exempt from federal gun rules. |

Senator Coburn's action does not put a stop to the controversial NICS bill, but it does keep it from barreling through without any opportunity to fix some of its serious flaws. The bill has caused a deepening of the rift between the "hard-line" and "moderate" branches of the gun rights movement. NRA cooperated in the crafting of the bill which blew through the House with their support in mid-June, but strong opposition from GOA and many grassroots organizations seems to be slowing the bill's momentum and damaging NRA's credibility. The Senate Judiciary Committee dramatically increased funding for the proposal just before the August recess and rolled several other "school safety" bills in with the NICS bill. |

"...finding the People tame and patient to a certain degree, conclude that they will or must be so to every and the utmost degree, and so never think of taking off their heavy hands, till the People, grown desperate, throw of them and their power, and having found no mercy, may be tempted to shew none..."
"...Power is an incroaching thing, and seldom fails to take more than is given. Men in limited authority are apt to covet more, and when they have gained more, to take all. When the children banged on the windows, Evans' wife thought someone was trying to get in their home. She told Evans to get his gun. She called 911.
Evans testified on Wednesday that he thought he was shooting at Rupert.
Weninger told the jurors they had to decide if Evans committed a crime given the circumstances that led up to the "accident."
He noted Evans had been good friends with Shores for years prior to the incident and he would not have fired the gun if he'd known she was there. |

As the premier organization representing American gun owners, the National Rifle Association (NRA) has taken center stage in the ongoing election drama. To stop anti-gun presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton, gun owners must unite to protect their Second Amendment rights. With early primaries right around the corner, theres no time to lose. Republican presidential candidates lined up to spend time with the NRA at its Celebration of American Values in Washington, D.C. Leading candidates of one of Americas major political parties set aside a day of campaigning to speak to NRA members. The candidates who took part understand that the gun vote is important. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly called for stricter statewide gun regulations today after a St. John's University student bought an antique weapon upstate and carried it onto a Queens campus. Mr. Kelly said the student, Omesh Hiraman, had a prior arrest for disorderly conduct when he attended Cornell University. But when he bought a .50 caliber Wolf rifle, bullets, and gunpowder last week at Dick's Sporting Goods in Poughkeepsie he did not have to show identification or undergo a background check because the weapon is not considered a firearm under state or federal laws. "Anything you can put a bullet in" should require a permit, Mr. Kelly said at a midday news conference. He added: "I'm certainly a proponent for more regulations." |

A Richmond grand jury will decide whether the fatal shooting of an ice-cream parlor armed robber was a justified act of self-defense or the reckless use of a deadly weapon.
On that decision rests the immediate future of David Fielding, a 21-year-old art student at Virginia Commonwealth University who was shift manager at the Forest Hill Avenue Baskin-Robbins store on Sept. 6, the night of the robbery. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
As I have stood in the crosshairs of those who target Second Amendment freedoms, I've realized that firearms are not the only issue. No, it's much, much bigger than that. I've come to understand that a cultural war is raging across our land, in which, with Orwellian fervor, certain acceptable thoughts and speech are mandated. Charlton Heston |
