Authorities believe a string of four attempted burglaries at gun stores over the last two weekends around the Grand Rapids area are linked.
On Wednesday, Grand Rapids Police Chief David Rahinsky said it appears a group of teenagers carried out the burglaries at the Grandville Cabela's and Grand Rapids Barracks 616, as well as the attempted burglaries at Rylee's Ace Hardware and Bachelder Master Gunmakers.
"To state the obvious, the last thing we want is to put additional illegal guns on the street," Rahinsky said.
The Grand Rapids Police Department is working to investigate the incidents along with the Kent County Sheriff's Office, Grandville Police and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. |

Of 33 handguns recently stolen from firearms dealers, 28 are still unaccounted for.
Thieves this month took 13 handguns from Cabela's in Grandville and another 20 from Barracks 616 in Cascade Township.
Police have recovered five of them.
In response, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, or ATF, on Thursday, Sept. 28, announced a $5,000 reward for information leading to recovery of the stolen guns.
Thieves broke into Cabela's, at 3000 44th St. SW, on Sept. 16. Eight days later, Barracks 616, at 5740 Foremost Dr. SE, was hit. Both businesses are federal firearms licensees.
Police have recovered five pistols and arrested at least eight suspects, including seven juveniles. |

Legislation introduced by Rep. Shane Hernandez, R-Port Huron, to give concealed pistol license holders a grace period for renewing their licenses has passed the Michigan House.
House Bill 4458 creates a six-month grace period after a CPL expires during which people who remain eligible for a license would be subject to a $330 fine if found to be carrying a concealed pistol, according to a news release from Hernandez's office.
The fine could be waived if the person gets a renewal within 60 days of the violation.
Currently, CPL holders face a five-year felony if they are found in possession of a concealed pistol after their license expires. |

Beating a criminal rap thanks to Floridas controversial Stand-Your-Ground law doesnt automatically shield you from civil lawsuits.
That was the decision Thursday by the Florida Supreme Court, which said that immunity granted by criminal-court judges dont apply to lawsuits filed in civil court.
Justices ruled in the case of a man named Nirav Patel, who struck a Tampa bar patron in the eye with a cocktail glass. A criminal-court judge ruled that Patel was acting in self-defense and granted him immunity from a charge of felony battery.
But the injured patron, Ketan Kumar, filed a lawsuit against Patel, who argued that the criminal courts decision applied in the newly filed civil case. The local appeals court agreed. |

Wertz told KOAT 7 TV news she works until 10 p.m. and often feels uncomfortable walking to her vehicle after the shift. She made sure it was in her pocket after she heard another nearby store was victimized by an armed robber earlier in the day.
It would be a fairy tale endingwith law enforcement telling the station she faces no charges and the alleged perpetrator expected to recover and face chargesbut, Wertz was on the clock for a convenience store chain with a strict employee firearms policy. She was immediately suspended for two weeks. KRQE news reports shes now been fired. |

New Jersey Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg has traveled a long way in her advocacy for smart guns. She was first approached about the idea 15 years ago by Jake Locicero, the father of a young woman, Amy Federici, who died at the hands of a crazed gunman in the 1993 Long Island train massacre, which killed now retired Rep. Carolyn McCarthys husband, injured her son, and propelled her to run for Congress.
He asked me if I ever heard of a smart gun. I said no. I conjured up a gun that fired itself, Weinberg recalled. Locicero explained that the emerging technology would lock a gun to all but its owner, lessening the chance that a stolen weapon could be turned on innocent victims. |

The Sept. 14 Journal Gazette editorial, Shot in the foot/Unlicensed gun-carry arguments debunked, does not debunk the reasons to support the right to keep and bear arms without paying the state for a permit to exercise a constitutionally protected right.
Nowhere in the U.S. Constitution is there a requirement to pay for a permit issued at government discretion to exercise any of the rights enumerated in the Bill of Rights. However, the editorial staff at The Journal Gazette, among many other anti-Second Amendment people, believes such discretionary government permission should be required in Indiana, and residents should pay for such permission with the proceeds going into the state's general fund. |

I've been following with interest your recent statements defending Facebook as an unbiased platform "for all ideas." I hope that's really true. However, blocking a candidate for the United States Senate for exercising support of the Second Amendment especially when that candidate is challenging an incumbent favored by members of your board is cause for concern and worthy of a larger conversation and a public explanation. |

The people of Indiana take their personal safety seriously. Fifteen percent of adult Hoosiers have a concealed carry permit higher than any other state in the country! Indiana is a leader in the growing national movement to take responsibility for our personal safety.
A record number of Americans carry firearms for self-defense because they know law enforcement cannot always be there to protect them. To give these law-abiding gun owners greater options, 12 states have passed laws allowing them to carry concealed without a permit sometimes called constitutional carry. |

The city now has seven calendar days to decide whether to ask the appeals court to put Thursdays ruling on hold as it decides whether to seek review by the Supreme Court.
The order from the D.C. Circuit indicates that none of the courts 10 judges who reviewed the citys petition asked for a vote on the request for rehearing.
Were pleased that our victory remains intact and that people in Washington, D.C., will have the ability to defend themselves against violent crime, said attorney Alan Gura, who represents one of the challengers, Brian Wrenn. The city has some decisions to make now as to whether they want the Supreme Court to take a look. We wouldnt necessarily oppose that. |

In a win for gun rights activists, a federal appeals court on Thursday let stand another courts ruling that it was unconstitutional for Washington, D.C.s local government to require licensed gun owners to provide a good reason for legally carrying a concealed weapon in the nations capital city.
The ruling potentially sets the matter on a path to the U.S. Supreme Court, because other federal courts have reached varying decisions in similar cases, the Washington Times reported. |

What is a fact?
This simple question was raised time and again with respect to permitless carry on Sept. 7, when members of an Indiana General Assembly study committee called for facts while questioning research linking increased crime and firearm homicide rates to laws that make it easier to carry a handgun.
This word is pretty easy to define. Merriam-Webster says a fact is a piece of information presented as having objective reality. At the inaugural permitless carry hearing on Aug. 22, committee members demanded just this: empirical evidence regarding permitless carry.
Ed.: A law professor ought not confuse a fact with a true fact, but many antis don't have any intellectual honesty. |
