As the Republican National Convention comes to a close, it is time for me to live up to the promise I made when I wrote about 'Why gun owners should fear a second term for President Obama.' That promise was to give the Republican nominee the same skeptical scrutiny that I gave to President Obama. And just as in that previous article, I am limiting my discussion to gun rights issues only.
I think it is only fair to note that, going into this article, I had some preconceived notions. Surely whoever the GOP nominated would be a sympathetic figure from a gun rights perspective wouldnt they? After all, isnt the GOP the gun-rights party? Well as it turns out, maybe not if you are a Massachusetts republican. |

Residents of inner-city neighborhoods plagued by gun violence say they feel neglected and ignored even in a presidential election year marked by highly publicized shootings at a Colorado movie theater, a Sikh temple and outside the Empire State Building - a year in which Republicans have launched a full-throated defense of gun ownership while Democrats have largely kept quiet about an issue they used to put front and center. |

A senior official at the Department of Homeland Security resigned on Saturday after accusations that she had created a sexualized office culture that was hostile to men. The official, Suzanne Barr, is a longtime aide to the departments secretary, Janet Napolitano, and had been on leave from her position as chief of staff to the director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement because of the allegations. In a letter to the ICE director, John Morton, that was obtained by The New York Times, Ms. Barr denied the accusations as unfounded and without any merit, but said she had decided to move on. |

An eccentric Queens man was busted Friday for having an arsenal of illegal weapons from handguns to machetes and more than 10,000 rounds of ammunition stored in his apartment, police and neighbors said. Michael Millazzo, 53, of Shore Blvd. in Astoria, was arrested by cops investigating reports of shots fired in the air in front of his home on Aug. 26. He was collared early Friday morning and cops recovered two handguns, 26 magazines, 10,537 rounds of ammunition, 32 machetes, 60 knives, 16 air pistols, an air rifle, seven tasers, eight brass knuckles, nine batons and 10 handcuffs, upon executing a search warrant.
Submitter's comment: A "massive arsenal" now comprises two real handguns and a bunch of other "scary" stuff. |

Among the many magazines that were battered by the recession, few survived such a precarious financial state as Garden & Gun. ... And to feed advertisers anxieties, nearly every issue featured unapologetic articles in praise of hunting. There were essays on quail hunts, hunting clubs and hunting dogs, often written with an emphasis on land preservation and basking in sumptuous photo spreads to rival Vogue or National Geographic. |

Dunn said he believes it's important to honor the right to bear arms in the Constitution, and that enforcement of existing gun laws is a better solution to gun violence than infringing that constitutional right.
"That requires a constant commitment to prosecuting guns (sold) illegally and those getting their hands on guns in violation of the law," he said. |

The Johnston County Board of Commissioners is expected to vote Tuesday on a proposed ordinance that would ban loud gun discharges a move that some gun owners oppose.

Gun control advocates like Mr. Bender seem to be demonstrating paranoid behavior toward guns and gun owners, particularly white ones. With this latest attempt to connect guns and healthcare, it only proves that they will stop at nothing to impose their fear of guns upon the rest of America. And the fact that they never stop, and constantly find new ways to try to restrict the Constitutional rights of their fellow Americans, reveals that they are not able to accept the reality of American society.
If anyone is in need of mental health care, it is those who display absolute ideological adherence to the fallacious liberal belief that removing guns from society will remove violence. |

She performed for nearly two hours, starting in a skin-tight black ensemble with a gun in hand as she sang the song "Girls Gone Wild" from her latest album "MDNA." She transitioned to "Revolver," as she and her background dancers held guns and bullets appeared on the backdrop. (Madonna posted on her website that she does not condone violence or the use of guns and she's using fake guns in concert as a metaphor for strength.) |

Pro-gun ownership statistics mean little to gun-control groups. Part of the reason is found in a few erroneous notions, one being that untrained criminals or insane attackers can shoot straight and legally licensed citizens cant.
After the Dark Knight theater shooting, it was assumed in the media that had there been a defensive shooter present, he or she would have missed the attacker in the dark and confusion, wounding patrons instead. The logic seemed to be that the bad guy could stand in the same environment as his victims, shooting them like fish in a barrel, but the good guys would only go nuts shooting a everything in site. That thinking by theater management and state legislators gave the perpetrator helpless targets. |

The shotgun that Robert Wayne Gladden Jr. allegedly used in last week's shooting at Perry Hall High School wasn't registered with the state. Under Maryland law, that wasn't required.
Police also say the 15-year-old Gladden should never have been able to get his hands on the weapon. He found it unsecured in his father's home, according to court documents. |

We hear a lot from rightwingers about "union thugs" and the Second Amendment and how it protects our liberties. Here's an historical fact:
In the entire history of the United States, the militia has been used dozens of times to shoot down workers and their families, but never to shoot bosses. |

What I see as the problem is that all the arguments, from both sides of the gun control issue, are placing the responsibility for gun control too far down the supply chain. None of the arguments for or against take into account that manufacturers produce these weapons, send them on their way, and do nothing about preventing their misuse beyond making mild expressions of regret. The arguments currently being made, for and against, are all wrong in one way or another because they address the effect, not the cause. In my opinion, they all involve faulty reasoning. To wit: |

Concerning the recent murders out west, it is plain to see that there is little communication between educational institutions and governmental agencies: To illustrate, all of the killings dating back to Columbine are associated with perpetrators either attending school or having recently withdrawn. In all of these settings, governmental authorities did not take steps to complete an active dossier on the perpetrators of these murders by working in concert with corresponding educational officials. Otherwise, this form of "double-checking" may have prevented to strengthen the administration of gun law provisions in his state. |

The owner of the Guns and Ammo Gunsmith store in North Augusta, S.C. thought he was going to die tragically. Three men had driven a van into his store, executing what they hoped would be a quick smash-and-grab robbery.
Instead, they met owner Stephen Bayezes, who opened fire on the three intruders after the commotion set off an alarm, hitting each one at least once. He says he is not proud of what he was forced to do, but added sometimes youve got to. The incident occurred on Aug. 9, but the owner says a set of tire marks on the stores floor and an unfinished wall are daily reminders of the night that he almost lost his life. |
