"Idaho, as with most states, has a preemption statute that guarantees uniform gun laws across the state. The laws have proven to be very popular, allowing gun owners to move freely without worrying about complying with a patchwork of laws from county to county, city to city. All states have some form of preemption law in place. In New York, courts have ruled that the State handgun licensing law preempts local ordinances. In the case of Twin Falls, Idaho, an old ordinance prohibited carrying guns in county parks. The ordinance was in direct violation of state law . . ."
"The matter was brought to their attention by the Second Amendment Foundation, and commissioners voted unanimously to repeal the offending language. ..."... |

"After days of waiting with no reply from billionaire Bill Gates in his challenge to debate the merits, or lack thereof, of Initiative 594, gun rights advocate Alan Gottlieb today upped the ante, offering to face both Gates and anti-gun former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, another billionaire backing the initiative."
"Gates and Bloomberg have each added more than $1 million apiece to the I-594 campaign coffer. That war chest is overflowing with money, yet the Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility (WAGR) over the weekend appealed for $3 donations to battle the first series of advertisements being run to support rival Initiative 591." ... |

... "Pending the release of further information, its impossible to tell if McLaw did or said anything beyond authoring novels reflective of contemporary commercial fiction that gave authorities credible reason to believe he was a real threat to himself and/or others. Without such details, speculation about 'Soviet-style punishment for a novelist' are to be expected, as is an equally likely possibility that this could simply be the type of zero tolerance insanity that results in bizarre gross official overreactions, like a student being suspended for writing about shooting dinosaurs." ... |

"We recently noted that ostensibly 'conservative' David Frum blames the militarization of police on widespread gun ownership by private citizens (or by 'the policed'--Frum's term for theoretically free citizens). This is becoming a popular theme of late, to the joy, no doubt, of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence."

... "So, this weekend, I joined my family to watch the Newtown Labor Day parade. We set our chairs up along the parade route and settled in to watch the days activities. As I waited for each float to go by, I noticed three young boys playing nearby with some toy firearms apparently purchased from a hawker who came to sell goods at the parade. One had a toy pistol (with requisite orange tip) and two had toy AR-15s (also with requisite orange tips) but, with enhanced 'machine gun' sound effects."
"... I watched and watched and no one seemed to give them a second look (or a first look for that matter). They were surrounded by hundreds of other people, and they were playing and 'shooting' and no one seemed to mind at all."... |

"Yesterdays Washington Times published a story about how there are now more than 57,000 gun-friendly bars and restaurants across the country, and how a couple of websites are now promoting the notion that catering to armed customers is good business."
"Its an idea that runs in the opposite direction from a continuing effort in Seattle, started under former anti-gun Mayor Mike McGinn, that encourages businesses to post their premises off limits to firearms. The Washington Times story ended by recalling the now-infamous Pit Authentic Barbecue armed robbery in Durham, N.C. earlier this year." ... |

"It is not uncommon for people in the UK to suggest total disarmament as a solution to the United States gun problem. Far removed from the realities of the US, the right to keep and bear arms seems strange to many people here. However, to suggest that disarming US civilians and police is in any way an obvious solution is rather nave. The final sentence of last weeks article gives an alarmingly throwaway tone to what is, in reality, an extreme solution."
"On a practical level regardless of your own beliefs on the right to bear arms the difficulties with such a 'solution' are great. ..." ... |

"Shortly after my wife and I moved into our new home, I was in the shower around 10:00 PM on a weeknight when my wife came in to tell me that somebody was banging on our front door. I rinsed the shampoo out of my hair, dried off, put on pants, grabbed my FNS 9 and Streamlight TLR-1 from the bedside table and headed downstairs to see what the commotion was about. Fortunately, the doorknocker had left, but I realized that I needed a better lighting situation as the TLR-1 that I have is the GameSpotter edition which is a bit large, and hard to mount to a pistol. I mentioned it to Nick and the next time we saw each other he tossed me a Rail Master Pro to try out"... |

"When Masterpiece Arms announced that they were planning on releasing a bolt action rifle at SHOT Show, I wasnt all that impressed. Masterpiece Arms has a bit of a reputation for making odd firearms, and theyve never really been known as a precision firearms manufacturer. That was before I took a trip down to Georgia to see their operation in person, and the impression I had of their products changed a great deal following that weekend. To make sure that their build quality wasnt a fluke I asked to test one of their new bolt action rifles back in Texas and see if it was really worth the coin . . ."... |

Instead of just running with his precision rifles and cranking out the same thing time and again, hes been hard at work perfecting the stock system he designed and adding a few new bells and whistles. "Few can deny the timeless lines of a classic 1911. Unfortunately, a lot of manufacturers screw up Old Slabsides by treating all that real estate like billboards. Not Dan Wesson. The Valor, like most of the DW line, is one of the cleanest looking pistols out there and is a true testament to exceptional quality materials, workmanship, and finish. You can spend a heck of a lot more on a custom 1911, but a gun like the Valor makes that additional money a lot harder to justify . . ."... |

"Heckler & Koch has been under fire recently in Germany for their G36 rifles. Soldiers in the field have been complaining about the terrible accuracy they are seeing during sustained firefights, and the complaints have been so persuasive that the German government stopped buying them altogether. A proper solution to the issue hasnt been found yet, but theres some circumstantial evidence to support the idea that Germany is about to switch from the G36 to the newly designated G38 otherwise known as the HK416 . . ."... |

"Gunshot wounds are costing the American taxpayer half a billion dollars a year, according to a study from the Urban Institute."
"Most of the victims are either uninsured or on public insurance like Medicaid, which means that the hospital costs get passed on to the taxpayer, the think tank said."
"The Urban Institute's study was based on statistics from 2010, when hospital costs from firearm assaults totaled $669.2 million. About 73% of that amount came a combination of uninsured victims ($193.8 million) and those on government insurance ($294.2 million)." ... -------

"Heres a question for psychologists: Why do millions of Americans want to be armed to kill? The latest federal report estimates that 8 million U.S. adults hold permits for concealed pistols. In West Virginia, permits have quadrupled since 2009."

The Census Bureau says the nation has 240 million adults so the 8 million legal pistol-packers are about 3 percent. In other words, nearly 97 percent of Americans dont become licensed to hide deadly weapons in their pockets." ... |
