A Fort Worth man accused of killing his former brother-in-law during an argument last year will not be tried for murder.
Prosecutors dismissed the murder charge against Brandon T. Conn on Monday, the day his trial in the Aug. 12, 2007, shooting death of Jeffrey Fincher was scheduled to begin.
Assistant District Attorney Samuel Williams said he dismissed the case because a key witness changed her story about whether she had warned Conn that Fincher had a gun. Without the witnesss testimony, it would have been difficult to counter Conns self-defense claim, Williams said. |

A graduate student leaving an evening class walks along the poorly lit sidewalk to the parking lot-it is a long, cold walk in the pitch-black night, and the student grows wary as shadows begin lurking in the distance. Suddenly, someone jumps out in front of the student, immediately threatening them with force. Before the student can react, they are raped and robbed.
This is a very scary scenario, and is one that happens on the SCSU campus every year.
It seems like every week we get an e-mail citing another attack to students somewhere on or near campus. However, all of these attacks could be prevented if we allow students to carry guns as a means of self-defense. |

News of the fatal stabbing that left USC student Bryan Richard Frost dead has sparked concern over the effectiveness of USC's emergency notification system, TrojansAlert.
The system came under scrutiny when some students who were signed up for the service said they did not receive text messages notifying them of the incident.
These new technical problems coincide with a September 2008 study by the Georgia Institute of Technology that found text-message alert systems are ineffective in large-scale emergency situations because cellular networks cannot handle high traffic volumes. |

...
The victim's self-defense weapon, her purse, turned out to be a good tool to use against her attacker. She was able to distract, delay and discourage the man by using excellent judgement and skill. The suspect has no known criminal history, according to police.

In light of the intimidating nature of the entire ordeal, Tom Elliott asked me not to write any more letters until after the trial. Wednesday he released me from that promise.
...
So Agent Chittum, while I wish you the best of luck in your personal life as well as personal safety in the low down lyin, cheatin stuff you do for the government ... I wish you no success in your efforts to undermine the Constitution. The not guilty verdict for Tom and Leonard Elliott was music to my ears. Well done, jury!

In a civil society, standing up for your rights and ensuring that authority acts within the bounds set by the law are necessary to prevent abuse of power. If you do not know your rights, then they might as well not exist. In fact, they do not exist. Only by knowing your rights and what they mean can you ensure they are observed.
...
The Second Amendment gives every individual the right to own firearms (recently confirmed by the Supreme Court in District of Columbia vs. Heller).
In Virginia, everyone age 18 and above has the right to openly carry (meaning in plain sight) a loaded, ready-to-shoot firearm almost anywhere in the state, with very few exceptions (fewer than you might think). |

It is with a great deal of honor and pride that the ISRA accepts the 2008 Affiliate of the Year Award from the Citizen's Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA). First awarded 23 years ago, the Affiliate of the Year award is bestowed upon organizations that demonstrate an exemplary dedication to the preservation of Second Amendment rights, and whose actions have helped preserve the freedoms protected by the United States Constitution.
Out of hundreds of eligible organizations, the ISRA is the only group to have received this award twice. The ISRA was first recognized as CCRKBA Affiliate of the Year in 1999. This year's award was presented...during the Gun Rights Policy Conference held this past weekend in Phoenix, AZ. |

"I thought Tom Barry said you didn't have to be a crack shot at seven yards -- if you were close enough to grab them by the belt buckle," offered the American.
McGrory looked at the American sharply, plainly angered. "Try it sometime Yank. Try it. Tom Barry didn't have to deal with SA80s and body armor and Kevlar helmets. And he never sprang an ambush where he didn't have local superiority in numbers. The problem with grabbin' the Brits by the belt buckles is gettin' 'em to stand still while you run up and do it. If fookin' Tom Barry had been in my boots, he'd-a been dead by now. That's what I know about bloody legendary Tom Barry."

A new city law requiring gun-owners to notify police when their weapon is lost or stolen will help police track down the "bad guy with guns" said Baltimore City Police Commissioner Frederick H. Bealefeld III Monday. "This is an added tool," Bealefeld said. "I am hoping that other people throughout the state will take notice." The law, which takes into effect on Nov. 11, requires gun owners to alert police within two days from the time they notice their weapon is missing. Failing to report a missing weapon will be a misdemeanor carrying a $500 fine for a first offense. Subsequent violations could result in $750 fines and up to 90 days imprisonment. Bealefeld said loose weapons quickly become a public safety concern. |

FULL TEXT BELOW: Luke Schreder thought the police officer looked like he just "needed a hug." The police officer disagreed. Schreder, 21, of 48 Denbigh Drive in Iowa City was arrested Saturday afternoon at 100 S. Dubuque St. for assault on a peace officer, public intoxication and interference with official acts. According to police records, Schreder ran up to an officer and stuck out his arms. The officer told him to "get away," but Schreder didn't take the hint and embraced the officer. When the officer told Schreder to put his hands behind his head, he refused. Officers got one handcuff on Schreder, but he wouldn't put his other arm behind his back to let them put the second handcuff on, according to the report.

A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit brought by an advocacy group trying to force Atlantas Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport to let licensed gun owners bring firearms into nonsecure areas.
U.S. District Judge Marvin Shoob ruled Friday that GeorgiaCarry.org presented no material facts to support the groups argument that a recent change in state law allowed weapons in areas outside security checkpoints of the worlds busiest airport.
--- Submitter's note: Judge Shoob disagreed with the concept that an "airport" is considered to be "public transportation", even though 38 states currently allow non-sterile-area airport carry with no issues. |

Iraq will allow doctors to carry guns to protect themselves after hundreds have been targeted and killed since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, the government said Monday.
The government also ordered the Health Ministry to begin building high security residential compounds around hospitals for physicians to live in, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's Cabinet said in a statement.
"By government decree, the Cabinet has ordered that each doctor be allowed to carry one weapon to protect himself," the statement said.
About 8,000 doctors fled Iraq since the 2003 war and the government has been trying to persuade many of them to return.

Jersey City officials vowed to appeal today an appellate court ruling issued this morning that affirmed a lower court's decision to strike down the city's one-gun-a-month ordinance. At a press conference held in front of City Hall, the city's top attorney, Bill Matsikoudis, said the appeal to the State Supreme Court would be based on the state's well-established principle of "home rule," which he said specifically allows municipalities to "regulate and prohibit" the sale of firearms as it sees fit. "We know the first order of business of any government ... is protection of its citizens," said Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy, flanked by gun control advocates and City Council members. |

Greg Llewellyn, his girlfriend and four friends were sipping hot tea outside a West Side coffee shop on a recent August night when a pair of Cleveland police officers approached with guns drawn. Get on the ground, an officer ordered, forcing the surprised group to set aside their drinks and hit the sidewalk belly-down. An officer began searching one of Llewellyn's friends before abruptly ending the suspense and demanding to know who had the gun. "I am the one who has the weapon," the 26-year-old Llewellyn answered. The butt of a black, holstered and loaded CZ-52 pistol -- a Czech-made gun -- was visible tucked behind him in his belt. The officers arrested him for carrying a concealed weapon. |

Two missions that should never intersect are those of the military and of the civilian police, respectively. The logic of empire ultimately demands that which our rulers have now provided: A militarized apparatus of coercion in which military and police roles are inextricably blended.

Declan Placidi, 8, fired his first rifle Saturday morning. The gun was a black powder rifle, which took a few minutes for the Elbridge Rod & Gun Club to load. Visitors like Placidi participated in various shooting ranges, which also included crossbow hunting, skeet shooting, computer-simulated laser rifles and an ax throw at the Carpenter's Brook Fish Hatchery. |
