A man caught breaking into a pole barn in Clyde Township was shot after driving his vehicle at the owner of the property, authorities say.

Deputies from the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the 6000 block of Lapeer Road Monday on a report of a breaking and entering in progress.

While deputies were en route, they were told shots had been fired at the scene and the suspect had driven away.

The property owner, a 50-year-old man from Port Huron, said he had made a report to Michigan State Police about the barn being broken into. He came back Monday and discovered more of his property sitting outside the pole barn. He decided to wait and see if the suspect would return.

Michigan's Department of Natural Resources has signed a lease agreement, clearing the way for construction of an $800,000 public shooting range in the Upper Peninsula's Richmond Township.

The range will be located west of Marquette on 25 acres previously used for timber and forest management, according to the state.

The property is owned by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co.

Construction is expected to be completed next summer. The range will have state-of-the-art sound control measures and environmental containment features, officials said.

Funding will come from a federal grant administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and supplemented by the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund.

Michigan hunters should expect big changes at DNR deer check stations this season. Staffing and financial shortages, due to both funding associated with long-term declines in the hunter base and the COVID-19 pandemic, will result in reductions in check station and drop-box locations, dates and hours operated, and the number of deer heads that will be accepted for chronic wasting disease testing.

Democrats worry that Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett, an originalist and textualist who clerked for Justice Antonin Scalia in the late 1990s, will emulate him if she is confirmed by the Senate. We could do a lot worse. Although progressives often portrayed Scalia as an authoritarian ogre, he was a more faithful defender of First, Fourth and Sixth Amendment rights that some of his purportedly "liberal" colleagues on the Court.

NSSF, the trade association for the firearm industry, is shining a spotlight on former Vice President Joe Bidens radical antigun campaign promise to end gun sales as America knows it. With this weeks release of the FBIs Uniform Crime Report (UCR) for 2019, the gun prohibition lobby is once again faced with an uncomfortable truth: Their crusade to ban so-called assault rifles doesnt pass the smell test.

Continuing a pattern that dates back decades, the number of homicides involving rifles of any kind amounts to a fraction of all the murders in any given year. By far, handguns are used in more slayings in any given year.

In 2002, Winchester developed their .270 Winchester Short Magnum (WSM) to improve the performance of the iconic .270 Winchester. They created the cartridge by necking down the case of a .300 Winchester Short Magnum to accept a 0.277-inch bullet. The performance increases that resulted far outshine the .270 Winchester, and in certain configurations, will even match the performance of the .270 Weatherby Magnum.
