CA: Oakland's Crime Problem is Part of a Disturbing Urban Trend

Crime in Oakland is hardly news these days. The New York Times recently ran a front page story outlining the tragic pathology. Last year's murder total already has been surpassed and the overall record is within reach. To put Oakland's current murder total into perspective, it is running reasonably ahead of New Orleans, and we don't have a Katrina to blame.

This is particularly troubling because the preponderance of violent crime is concentrated primarily in two areas within East and West Oakland. Moreover, the majority of the perpetrators, as well as the victims, are African American.

TWO YEARS AGO THIS MONTH, the federal ban on assault weapons expired. Since then, sales of such weapons have almost certainly increased, and the number of crimes in which they have been used has undoubtedly risen. Unfortunately, there's no way to know for sure. That's because the public and law enforcement agencies no longer have access to information they could routinely get just a few years ago.

The city can ban firearms in city parks despite a state law that allows Ohioans to carry hidden guns, a state appeals court ruled on Friday. The 2-1 ruling from the 6th District Court of Appeals could affect other cities that ban concealed handguns in its parks. The court upheld the city's ban because it said the state law gives private property owners the right to ban handguns thus making the state law not a "general" law.

A would-be robber got more than he bargained for early Saturday when his intended victim pulled out a handgun and shot him five times outside a Lawrence bar, authorities said.
Police identified the suspected robber as Ronald Zenor, 29, Indianapolis, who was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital, where he died.
The incident occurred about 3:30 a.m. as the Sports Page Lounge, 4603 N. Post Road, was closing.
Eric Conter, 22, Indianapolis, had left the bar and climbed into his pickup. Zenor reached through the window, tried to pull a necklace off Conter's neck and began choking him, Lawrence Police Chief Jack Bailey said.
Acting in self-defense, Conter pulled out his 9 mm pistol and shot Zenor, Bailey said.

Newark police are seizing guns at a record-setting pace this year, another sign that firearms are becoming more widespread in the city, officials say.

Shootings and homicides -- including the shooting early yesterday of five people, three fatally, in an apartment on Sanford Avenue -- are also up, even as overall crime continues to drop. It's a disturbing trend in which police are seeing more petty altercations ending with gunfire.
