I had intended to have a little fun today with this column. Well, maybe I should say poke a little fun at an organization that I see no need for its existence.
Somehow, I ended up on the e-mail list of the Second Amendment Foundation awhile back and recently I got an invitation to the group's "20th annual Gun Rights Policy Conference, which will be taking place Sept. 23, 24 and 25, 2005 at the Los Angeles Marriott in Los Angeles, Calif.'

LAFAYETTE, Louisiana (Reuters) - Thousands of New Orleans residents streamed north on Saturday, escaping the violence that gripped the city in the days after it was devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
Women spoke of the terror they felt as gangs of thieves and rapists roamed the streets and temporary shelters night after night, plucking victims -- some of them children -- at whim and with no fear of police intervention.

Rhonda Mandel hates guns.
But then Hurricane Katrina sideswiped New Orleans on Monday and the Fort Myers woman was suddenly stuck in a French Quarter hotel.
Two days later, Mandel found herself and about 75 other guests preparing to drive an armed caravan of abandoned cars out of the city.
Mandel's driver a hotel employee armed to the teeth stopped to show her how to use a handgun.
"I told him no," Mandel said. "I didn't want to."
The engineer looked her in the eye, deadly serious.
"He said, 'What are you going to do when they shoot me?'" Mandel recalled.
She didn't have a good response. "OK," she finally answered. "Show me."

A shock from a Taser stun gun caused a teenager in Chicago to go into ventricular fibrillation, a usually fatal heart disturbance, according to a letter published yesterday in The New England Journal of Medicine.
The letter, written by two doctors at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago, appears to be the first medically documented case of ventricular fibrillation caused by a Taser gun. Tasers are pistol-like weapons that fire electrified barbs up to 25 feet, immobilizing people with painful shocks. |

Rockin' and rantin', a wild Ted Nugent takes no prisoners
It's hard to know for sure if legendary wild-man rocker Ted Nugent set a new world's record for offending the widest array of people at the Maryland State Fair in Timonium the other night.
But if he didn't, it sure wasn't from a lack of effort.
Let's see, during the course of a nearly two-hour concert under threatening skies, the famously right-wing, pro-hunting, heavy-metal guitar wizard managed to take shots at, among others: PETA, vegetarians, hippies, smokers, tobacco-chewers, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Jesse Jackson, gun-control advocates and country music fans.

Roswell City Council recently passed a new "weapons discharge" ordinance. Reflecting the good bureaucrats they are, the council, with the support of Mayor Jere Wood (but without the support of Councilman Terry Joyner), decided the existing two-paragraph ordinance that basically prohibited the irresponsible discharge of firearms or air rifles within city limits was far too short, clear and concise to meet modern standards of governance.

When guns are fired, its animals - not humans - in crosshairs
Oshkosh Police officers havent discharged a gun at a human being since the 1980s.
Its a streak officers have no intention of breaking.
A variety of animals havent been so lucky.
Police Department use of force records show police from 2001 through mid-2005 killed 33 animals. In all cases, the animals were injured or possibly dangerous, commonly found in neighborhoods by residents and reported to police.
Officers were tapped to put the animals out of their misery.

Last week I visited the New Hampshire factory and was able to handle this new gun. Both the manufacturing process and the firearm are impressive.

Finally, a politician who seems to be on the right track when it comes to cracking down on gun crime in Canada.
Surprisingly enough the bright idea comes from a New Democrat, and regular readers will know that we don't often agree with what the lefties have to say.
But Manitoba Attorney General Gord Mackintosh hit the nail on the head when he demanded that the feds get tough with people convicted of smuggling guns into Canada.

FUTURE re-enactments of the English Civil War could have Roundheads and Cavaliers doing battle with broom handles instead of muskets under proposed laws banning the sale and manufacture of replica guns. The legislation would leave re-enactment societies unable to buy or repair imitation pistols and rifles. The National Association of Re-enactment Societies (Nares), is lobbying the Government to exempt its members from the Violent Crime Reduction Bill.

They are anonymous but highly dangerous not because they use the products they sell but because the products they sell spew death.
These are gun runners who have no objection to selling any amount and any type of weapons to persons who have the right amount of money.
Shockingly these agents of death are operating in Goa and what is appalling is that the State police are clueless of their whereabouts and their modus operandi.

BELLEVUE, WA -- The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) today announced a campaign to flood the White House with letters from American gun owners demanding that government put its energies into controlling the borders, rather than guns owned by law-abiding citizens.
"We intend to tell President Bush that American gun owners are tired of taking the heat, and the rap, for increasing numbers of violent crimes committed by illegal aliens," said CCRKBA Chairman Alan M. Gottlieb. "We need to control our borders, not perfectly legal firearms. Our government should seriously restrict access to our country by people who have no right to be here, rather than restrict the gun rights of citizens who were born here."

KENORA, Ont. -- A plan to conduct blitz inspections on Toronto gun shops as Canada's largest city battles a string of shooting deaths is getting shot down by two groups representing Ontario hunters.
The Ontario Federation of Anglers, which represents tens of thousands of gun owners and hunters, says the plan is a waste of police resources on an industry that is already rigorously inspected.
