"Earlier this year, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled in Parker v. District of Columbia that ... a local law that effectively bars District residents from owning handguns violates the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. ... A panel of experts including Ohio State professor Saul Cornell, University of Tennessee Law professor Glenn Reynolds, Legal Director of the [BCPGV], Dennis Henigan, Executive Director of the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence, Joshua Horwitz, and lawyers for the plantiffs in Parker, Alan Gura (Gura & Possessky, PLLC.), Bob Levy (Cato), and Clark Neily (the Institute for Justice) predict the outcome of the case, and debate about the Second Amendments relation to the right to bear arms." ... |

"When it comes to banning guns on campus, and when students suffer damages (such as wrongful death) due to an interference with their civil rights, is there a liability on the part of the campus who writes and enforces such a gun ban?"
"We are no longer discussing banning guns on campus for some theoretical safety reasons, we are now discussing the fate of students when those policies and politics have failed. Policies of banning weapons are clearly understood now to act to the detriment of the very people the policies claimed to protect and much, much more than the what-if's of general concealed carry on campus squabbling. ..." ... |

"If it was true, I was going to be mad as hell. Imagine, an NRA Board Member supporting restrictions on semi-automatic firearms - it was 'Jim Zumbo' all over again. Only this time ... it was one of the 76 people in the world charged with setting the policies and direction of the most powerful gun-rights organization ever known. But was it true?" ...
"... NRA Board Members are ELECTED BY A DIRECT VOTE OF THE MEMBERSHIP, not foisted upon us (unlike those unaccountable 'no compromise' fly-by-nights.) There seems to be a 'doth protest too loudly' quality to many of those complaints, leaving the bad smell of a hidden agenda at work." ... -------

"Hunters remain a powerful force in American society, as evidenced by the presidential candidates who routinely pay them homage, but their ranks are shrinking dramatically and wildlife agencies worry increasingly about the loss of sorely needed license-fee revenue."
"New figures from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service show that the number of hunters 16 and older declined by 10 percent between 1996 and 2006 _ from 14 million to about 12.5 million. The drop was most acute in New England, the Rocky Mountains, and the Pacific states, which lost 400,000 hunters in that span." ... -------

"Most legal experts believe the court will accept the case, which could lead to a historic decision next year on whether the ambiguously worded Second Amendment to the Constitution protects private gun ownership or only imparts a civic right related to maintaining state militias."
"'It is eminently reasonable to permit private ownership of other types of weapons ... but ban the easily concealed and uniquely dangerous modern handgun,' states the petition, filed by District Attorney General Linda Singer. "Mayor Adrian Fenty has announced the city has formally filed an appeal to the Supreme Court in the hopes that it will overturn a March decision in which a lower court found that the District's ban on handguns was unconstitutional. Though the appeal has been a month in the making, Fenty and D.C. Attorney General Linda Singer today explained their reasoning in an op-ed published in the Post. In it, they reject the individual right to own firearms while arguing that the Second Amendment does not preclude states from imposing regulations on the ownership and use of guns. Moreover, they state that the handgun ban is central to ensuring the safety of District residents." ... |
