The train station in Solln, a suburb of Munich, isn't particularly noteworthy. Here, the city's apartment buildings have given way to family homes with gardens. Trains running on just two tracks service Solln's station, which is right next door to an elementary school. But despite being nondescript, nearly everyone in Germany has heard of the Solln train station.
It was here that Dominik Brunner, a 50-year-old business man, was beaten up by two teenagers last September. He later died in hospital. Brunner had stepped in to stop the teenagers from bullying some young boys, and was praised as a hero for his civil courage. |

On the heels of Senate Bill 239, a proposal which would allow concealed-carry permit holders to take a loaded gun into a restaurant that serves alcohol, another piece of legislation is in the works in the Ohio House which would give more rights to employees who are gun owners.
House Bill 571, which was introduced by Joe Uecker, 66th District Representative, and is co-sponsored by 30 other representatives, would amend section 2923.126 of the Ohio Revised Code. The law would not allow private employers to prohibit a concealed-carry permit holder from storing the employee's handgun in a locked motor vehicle on the employer's premises. Any current employer policy prohibiting such would have to be amended. |

I wasn't extremely surprised to hear of a candidate for public office making the rounds in an election season, but something said while at his stop Aug. 24 in York left me taken aback. While speaking at this campaign event, Mr. Toomey stated that his idea of gun control is steady aim.
...
Living just outside of Harrisburg, I'm well aware of the prolonged epidemic of teenage-related shootings in the city. Police officers and children also are among those who have paid the price when firearms fall into the wrong hands. Although sensible restrictions cannot stop every incident, it can undoubtedly make a tremendous impact.
Mr. Toomey's views on gun control are too extreme for my palette even as a resident of rural Pennsylvania. |

What the NRA learned is that vast swaths of their membership were not single issue voters. They learned that their members were lovers of the whole Constitution. And as word of the potential endorsement spread the pushback was becoming obvious and even threatened the organization's ability to raise money. The NRA will, of course, deny this. They will say that they were having no problem at all getting funds to flow to their coffers. But the fact of the matter is that long time supporters of the gun right's group who regularly dropped checks in the mail every time the NRA sent a fund raising letter were tossing these requests in the garbage. |

A recent Supreme Court decision could alter what public transit riders here see in advertisements on city buses and trains and in transit shelters.
Images promoting guns, which are banned under an advertising policy of the San Francisco Metropolitan Transportation Agency, showed up recently on posters for a conference for the Second Amendment Foundation, a gun rights group based in Washington.
The group spent some $10,000 to have the posters, which feature a woman armed with a shotgun, hung at bus stops across the city. The posters red type reads, A violent criminal is breaking through your front door. Can you afford to be unarmed? |

The government of North Carolina strips Second Amendment rights from its citizens during time of an emergency?
Are you kidding me?
When the government is least able to defend its citizens, it wants to ensure that they can no longer defend themselves? What kind of mentality is at play here?
From North Carolina declared gun free zone in anticipation of Hurricane Earl:
State of emergency declared in North Carolina, the WECT News 6 headline informs us. Governor Bev Perdue has declared a State of Emergency for North Carolina in anticipation of Hurricane Earls arrival. |

I also learned that pro- and anti-gun lobbyists often make their cases as if there is no middle ground. You either love guns, or hate them. There are certainly a lot of posted articles that express extreme views one way and the other, but if you read comments from readers, you find a lot of folk who, like me, find owning guns for hunting and home defense to be perfectly reasonable, but worry that the current campaign towards open or concealed carry may lead to more problems than it solves. |

As it is legal in Georgia to carry a gun only in a church parking lot -- not in the church -- some supporters of bearing arms are working to have that law changed.
The Baptist Tabernacle of Thomaston and GeorgiaCarry.org asked for an injunction to bar enforcement of a law that bans guns in churches. But Jerry Henry, who heads the gun-rights advocacy group, reports that "the judge would not grant the injunction, but he did say that he would move forth with the lawsuit, which was, in our mind, a good idea."
Henry explains that the problem is the church does not have private property rights like an individual does. |

"The federal government has posted signs along a major interstate highway in Arizona, more than 100 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border, warning travelers the area is unsafe because of drug and alien smugglers, and a local sheriff says Mexican drug cartels now control some parts of the state.
The signs were posted by the Bureau of Land Management, or BLM, along a 60-mile stretch of Interstate 8 between Casa Grande and Gila Bend, a major east-west corridor linking Tucson and Phoenix with San Diego.
They warn travelers that they are entering an "active drug and human smuggling area," and they may encounter "armed criminals and smuggling vehicles traveling at high rates of speed." |

A Diamondhead man who shot an off-duty police officer in the shoulder after the officer tried to stop his wife for a possible traffic violation wont face charges, the Garland County prosecuting attorney said.
Patrol Officer Fred Ensminger used poor judgment in his aggressive pursuit of Cindy Nelson, and Nelsons husband, Jerry Chambliss, was justified in using deadly physical to defend himself and his wife, prosecutor Steve Oliver concluded in a report released Friday. Oliver also noted Ensminger wouldnt be charged because he acted with the belief he was justified under the color of the law. |

The shooting range has been the subject of scrutiny since May, when a nearby resident was struck and injured by a bullet she believes came from Del-Tone.
The gun club had to apply for a new conditional-use permit after the county found it was violating its old one by allowing handguns. County staff also discovered that not all of the range's shooting bays were on property covered by the original permit.
The county planning commission recommended approving a new permit with several conditions, including increasing the height of protective berms and installing a baffle system to cover three of its six shooting bays to contain bullets. |

What some people are saying regarding Assemblyman Dave Townsends vote on Assembly Bill 7575 is misleading. The assembly website (www.assembly.state.ny.us) reveals that the real goal of this legislation is to limit Second Amendment rights under the guise of protecting against domestic violence.
This bill would not have prevented the recent terrible tragedy in Blossvale; any attempt to link this tragedy with this bill is not only dishonest, it is calculated to unfairly throw mud at Mr. Townsend, Assemblywoman RoAnn Destito, Assembly members Bill Magee and Marc Butler and the other 12 women members of the Assembly who also voted against this legislation. |

It took only a few seconds the other day to see how candidate Obama got the idea that we have a propensity in Pennsylvania to "cling to guns and religion."
I was in the lobby of the Jefferson Regional Medical Center, leafing through a stack of magazines on the table. There was one copy each of Woman's Day and House Beautiful, but no Forbes, Newsweek or National Geographic. Everything else was guns and religion!
What first caught my attention, because I had just purchased two small fig trees at Lowe's a few days earlier, was an article in the Believer's Voice of Victory about a fig tree on the road to Jerusalem back in Biblical times.

On Thursday night in Brooklyn, a suspect was chased and quickly surrounded by a group of patrolmen in blue uniform jackets who ordered him to halt. The man, David Flores, 33, who witnesses say was fondling himself in front of children in a Hasidic section of Brooklyn known as Borough Park, was about to be caught by the men in blue. He began shooting at the men, all unarmed, with a .22-caliber handgun, the authorities said, hitting and wounding four before being tackled. Although these streets are in the jurisdiction of the New York Police Department--the 66th Precinct--these patrolmen were not police officers. In fact, two were bakers, one was a dry cleaner and the fourth sells insurance.
