A cab driver shot and killed a would-be robber around 10 p.m. Sunday at Carowinds Boulevard and South Tryon Street, Charlotte Mecklenburg Police said.
The cab had been dispatched to the Colonial Village apartments at the intersection where he picked up a fare, said Capt. Allan Rutledge, of the Steele Creek Division of Charlotte Mecklenburg Police.
The cab driver told authorities that the man he picked up pulled a gun, at which point the driver pulled his own handgun and shot and killed the man, Rutledge said. |

The Violence Policy Center has a long record of cooking data to try to build a national case against civilian ownership of firearms.
Theyve failed, of course; more Americans own guns today than ever, while the idea of a link between crime and the demonstrably law-abiding armed citizen is almost too specious for modern physics to measure. Gun control is a third rail like few others in American politics.
Which doesnt mean they wont try; the VPC - the very definition of an astroturf group - has masters with deep pockets to obey. And so they keep cranking out the material. |

The State Prosecutor's Office has made a plea bargain with Shai Dromi, the Negev farmer aquitted of murder after shooting and killing a Bedouin thief who broke into his home one night in January 2007.
In several prior incidents, several of Dromi's dogs had been killed, and his horse and tractor had been stolen by Bedouin thieves.
According to the deal struck Sunday between the state and Dromi's attorneys, the farmer will serve five months of community service for carrying firearms without a license. |

I have written many times that I support the Second Amendment. However, I refuse to support the morons who take their guns to town hall meetings and line the streets where the president's motorcade will pass.
What do they hope to gain? What's the purpose? What does packin' a gun have to do with health care reform?
First, we'll cure your cancer, then we'll take away your guns; is that what they are trying to say? Yeah, right. The cause of gun ownership is not helped by these morons.
Let's suppose, hypothetically, that a group of 20 or so in Muslim garb with firearms strapped to their waist were to show up along the parade route of a president. What do you suppose the public reaction would be? Hysteria, that's what. |

A Mississippi high school football player is being hailed as a hero for saving a school bus full of elementary and high school students from a gun-wielding girl.
Kaleb Eulls, 18, says he tried to keep the gun-wielding girl's focus on him and away from other students.

hey say their three-year-old grandson might have survived if a Wichita police officer hadn't made them stop CPR. Isaiah Jones drowned in his grandparents' above-ground pool last week.
The boy's grandmother, Pam Jordan, was taking care of him as part of her daycare. She says just moments after seeing the boy playing on her locked back patio, he was gone. Thinking the boy might have sneaked back into the home, Jordan yelled Isaiah's name and called 911 to report a missing child.
Shortly after, she found him floating in the backyard pool. |

Thus we must not wait for the mis-named "Republican" party to get its act together. It never will. If they sold us out in good times, welshing on their promises after 1994, growing the power and scope of government, not only refusing to reign in the ATF and the FBI BUT GROWING THEIR POWER AND LENGTHENING THEIR LEASHES, what may we expect for them in bad times but ineffectual excuses?
The Tea Parties did not come from the GOP, as much as the Dems might wish to imagine it. People are flooding into the streets and the public meetings precisely because they have concluded that the "system," as they have understood it, no longer protects them. Thus, they will make their own arrangements.

It is plain that the rush on firearms is slacking off for the moment. The rush on ammo? Not so much. This is not because of the political threat to supply of future laws, I think, but rather stems from the sensible notion that --
a. In any country that is currently trying to print its way out of a big hole by digging a deeper one in monetizing the debt, it is property, real property, THINGS, that will hold their value more than paper money, and
b. That this policy insanity (and other Obamanoid stupidities) can only lead to societal degradation, even breakdown, i.e. to a tidal wave of crime posing an existential threat to all.

From typeay comes the sad news of a fatal explosion in the Serbian Prvi Partizan ammunition factory.
His comment:
Prayers for the family and friends of those killed or injured. Prvi is one of the main ammunition suppliers still shipping brass cased, boxer primed, reloadable, high-quality ammunition to the USA. It is an excellent, accurate product. I've shot "more than my share" of Prvi. Stand by for supply speed bumps in the ammo market, yet AGAIN.
I second typeay's call for prayers for the victims, and his praise for the quality of Prvi's product.
More selfishly, I also wince at what effect this will have on the continuing ammo shortages and high demand here. |

Augeas was the King of Elis and was best known for his stables, which housed the single greatest number of cattle in the country and had never been cleaned -- at least until the time of the great hero Heracles. (Also known as Hercules.) In the Fifth of the Twelve Labors of Heracles, the Greek hero was given the task of cleaning out these Augean stables in a single day. Unlike Heracles' previous tasks, this was intended to be both humiliating and impossible, since the livestock were immortal and divinely healthy, thus producing an enormous quantity of cow pies. In the tale, however, Heracles succeeds in cleaning the stables by rerouting the rivers Alpheus and Peneus to wash out the excrement. . In any case, the cows kept dumping.

Though preppers tend to keep their activities "a secret thing," he said, they talk to the person who sells them gold and silver. Those he meets express anxiety about the potential for natural disaster, major terrorist attack or "a fall from within based on the lack of responsibility of the government."
Retired railroader Randy Lindsey, 57, of La Grande has stored 35,000 pounds of food, tons more unmilled wheat, and survival and ammunition-reloading gear. A lifelong Mormon, he's motivated in part by church leaders' call to store up to two years of food per person.
But he's gone a step beyond. "I've got weapons here and at a remote location," he said. "Generators, water purification -- and all the food I have is freeze-dried." |

Fearing jihadists will attack synagogues during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, a group of badass rabbis has developed a program to turn your average shul-goer into a lean, mean fighting machine.
The group, which calls itself the International Security Coalition of Clergy, was founded by Rabbi Gary Moscowitz, who boasts a black belt in karate, teaches martial arts and was an NYPD cop for nine years.
He's teaching others basic and advanced fighting moves -- how to take down a terrorist by the neck, how to use a table as cover from gunfire and how to execute a nifty running somersault while drawing a gun -- that he says can be used by Jews if they're attacked by terrorists during prayer. |

About three decades ago, when he was a banjo-toting stand-up comedian rather than an actor and screenwriter, Steve Martin made the jocular suggestion that crime could be radically reduced through the imposition of the death penalty for traffic violations.
As is so often the case, government policy appears to have overtaken parody, at least in Jericho, Arkansas:
It was just too much, having to return to court twice on the same day to contest yet another traffic ticket, and Fire Chief Don Payne didnt hesitate to tell the judge what he thought of the police and their speed traps. The response from cops? They shot him. Right there in court. |

Police were apparently after a woman Ayers had dropped off just prior to stopping at the convenience store where police confronted him. Surveillance video shows a black SUV pulling up to the store, and plain-clothes officers jumping out with their guns drawn before the vehicle has stopped. Ayers' car then backs into the picture, and the officers fire into his car as he drives off. Ayers was shot in the liver, crashed his car a short distance later, and died at the hospital from the bullet wound.
A police spokesperson says the officers identified themselves as they got out of the truck, though even if they did, it isn't difficult to see how someone in Ayers' position might panic when confronted with armed, plain-clothes men who'd just jumped from a black SUV. He had also just returned from getting money from the store's ATM. There were no drugs in Ayers' car. |

The former police chief of a tiny town in North Carolina has been convicted in connection with a road rage incident last year on Route 422 in Montgomery County.
A Montgomery County judge told Willie Gore that even the best of people can sometimes turn into monsters on the road and then he convicted the former chief of simple assault and reckless endangerment.
The judge ruled the Spring City man used his nine millimeter handgun to menace another driver during a confrontation on Route 422 in Upper Merion.
The 63-year-old man was sentenced to two years probation and ordered to turn over the handgun to authorities.

LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. -- An Indiana man has filed a lawsuit claiming that police forcibly withdrew blood and urine from his body during a drunken driving arrest, WLWT-TV reported.
According to the suit, police arrested Jamie Lockard, 53, on suspicion of drunken driving in March.
A Breathalyzer test showed he was under the legal limit, but Officer Brian Miller doubted the findings. |
