The United States has the most heavily armed civilian population in the First World; our homes contain enough firearms for every man, woman and child.
Why do so many Americans own guns? The main reason, according to surveys, is protection. Advocates argue that guns in the home both deter crime (criminals refrain from even trying to break in because they fear being shot by an armed citizen) and thwart it (an armed citizen can stop a crime in progress, preventing injury or theft). |

Area police chiefs say they do not believe that new state minimum standards for use of deadly force by police will have much impact on the policies they have in place now.
Stow Police Chief Jeff Film said Sept. 3 that from what he had heard so far, he does not believe the standards will impact the city.
"We're way ahead of the game. We've had a use of force policy for a long time, before I started, which was '91," said Film. "We're way above what they're asking." |

Tom, I fully understand your frustration expressed in your editorial. Two defining issues of our time that cause the biggest splits in politics and personal beliefs are gun control and abortion. To the true believers on both sides there is no middle ground.
I suppose where I have issues is the call for "reasonable" gun control. Who decides what is reasonable? |

Americans are increasingly convinced that owning a gun makes them safer.
A new Rasmussen poll found that an overwhelming majority of Americans (68 percent) feel safer in a neighborhood where guns are allowed. And a series of polls by Gallup, the Pew Research Center, and ABC News and the Washington Post show similar results. |

You frequently find fortune cookie aphorisms, yes, but its not often that you find searing insight within Twitters 140-character confines. Which is why a June tweet from one Dan Hodges his profile describes him as a British political commentator stood out.
In retrospect, wrote Hodges, Sandy Hook marked the end of the U.S. gun control debate. Once America decided killing children was bearable, it was |

One of the more effective ways for government officials to shut out the public from policy issues and debate is to simply ignore the issues. Don't bring up matters of public concern; look the other way if someone else does. I'd guess that more bills have been buried in some state legislative committee by Democrats and Republicans than there are tombstones in Forest Home Cemetery. |

Ah yes, Labor Day weekend. The unofficial end of summer. Football back on the tube. The first leaves starting to fall (well not here in Austin, but somewhere). The promise of better shooting weather. And the second semi-annual Knob Creek machine gun shoot and confabs not far off. Of course, if youre planning on attending the fall shoot, youll wan to maximize your time on the line with all that fun full-auto paraphernalia by making yourself familiar with as many those bullet hoses as possible. |

Shazam! Its almost as if Americans are rational actors, responding to the threat of potentially higher costs, increased regulatory hurdles and more scarcity by stocking up on a given item. Thats USA Todays Kevin Johnsons incredulous takeaway from the news that August NICS checks were the highest since the system was created. The NSSFs Larry Keane attempts to explain this mysterious phenomenon for the economically challenged: Whenever there is a call for gun control, sales increase. Eloquent in its brevity, no? |

One of the finest made pistols that a shooter can lay his hands on is a Sphinx Arms pistol.
These Swiss made handguns have raised the bar on manufacturing and the build quality is nothing short of superb.
Many moons ago we reviewed the Compact version for RECOIL Magazine and when test time was over we regretted not buying the sample we received. However, the author made a vow to grab the next one that came down the pike.

As a general rule of thumb, I refuse to read the Raleigh News & Observer, but everyone once in a while their editorial staff will go above beyond their normal vapid bloviating to new heights or depths, depending on your point of view.
The N&Os Ned Barnett has gone that extra mile in an op-ed blaming gun owners for buying guns that are then stolen by criminals. |

I am still waiting for the News Sentinel to get back to practicing real journalism instead of being the quasi-journalism tabloid paper that it has become. The lead Sept. 1 story, "Bill would ban gun at events," should have been titled "Democrats attack law-abiding gun permit citizens again." Who wouldn't support the first title?

A Santa Ana homeowner said he had to pull the trigger after wrestling a gun from one of two intruders who entered his home Friday morning, ktla.com reports. Copy that. What else are you going to do after a bad guy enters your bedroom with a gun, takes an enormous amount of physical abuse and keeps coming? The fact that Erickson Dumaual used the bad guys own gun is neither here not there, although you have to wonder why Mr. Dumaual didnt have a gun there, by the bedside. |

On September 5, the California Senate passed a bill banning residents from flying drones over prisons or jails in the state. Those caught doing so would face misdemeanor charges.
The bill now goes to Governor Jerry Brown (D) to be signed. According to San Diego Source, the bill was driven by Republicans concerned that drones would be used to deliver pornography, drugs, guns and other contraband to prisoners and inmates.

Renewed calls for more restrictive gun laws, following a succession of fatal shootings in the United States, immediately appear to be generating a boost for the gun industry.
Newly released August records show that the FBI posted 1.7 million background checks required of gun purchasers at federally licensed dealers, the highest number recorded in any August since gun checks began in 1998. |
