When Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced that he will propose legislation to ban so-called assault weapons, the chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms had a blistering response.

Unfortunately, said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb, Washington state has an attorney general that attacks constitutional rights instead of defending them. He is bought and paid for by the gun prohibition lobby.

Ferguson, a Democrat now running for re-election, told a press conference that he will be getting help from Democrat state Senators David Frockt (46th District) and Kevin Ranker (40th District) to draft the legislation, which will be introduced in December.

No charges will be filed against an Onslow County woman who fatally shot her estranged husband after the man killed her boyfriend.

District Attorney Ernie Lee tells news outlets that 32-year-old Monica Rose Smith won't be charged in the death of 33-year-old Cody Smith.

Officials say Monica Smith shot and killed Cody Smith in an act of self-defense after he killed her boyfriend, 43-year-old Gregory Pearce.

Ferguson announced his proposal Wednesday, flanked by the parents of a fourth Mukilteo victim, who was seriously injured, as well as dozens of Democratic legislators and officials.

The legislation, which has not yet been written, would ban military-style semi-automatic weapons like the AR-15 rifle that police say was used by the 19-year-old alleged gunman in Mukilteo as well any magazine that holds more than 10 rounds of ammunition.

On September 2, Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich issued a written opinion that concealed carry permit holders are not prevented from being armed on private school campuses in the state for self-defense.

Brnovich also said that private schools are not prohibited from keeping guns on campus that can be retrieved for use in the event of an attack on the school.

Thats what your NRA is doing to correct a purposely insane situation in which a gunsmith who attaches a sight to a rifle might be told by the State Department, thanks to guidance from the Barack Obama administration, that he or she must register as a manufacturer and pay $2,250 every year to the State Department.

The National Instant Criminal Background Check System recorded 60,745 handgun checks and another 30,602 for long gun purchases, the most ever conducted in Illinois since the federal database rolled out in 1998.

This November, Maine voters will be faced with an age-old question how much freedom are you willing to sacrifice in the name of safety?

Billionaire and ex-New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has used Maines Citizens Initiative Process to almost single-handedly fund a campaign to make his version of universal background checks the law of the land in the Pine Tree State.

Question 3 asks, Do you want to require background checks prior to the sale or transfer of firearms between individuals not licensed as firearms dealers, with failure to do so punishable by law, and with some exceptions for family members, hunting, self-defense, lawful competitions, and shooting range activity?

After a primary election season that featured the Republican candidate for Missouri governor shooting guns and blowing things up, the National Rifle Association on Tuesday endorsed his opponent, Democratic Attorney General Chris Koster.

The NRA Political Victory Fund said Koster's commitment to the Second Amendment earned him an "A" rating.

"For over 17 years, he has fought to preserve the constitutional rights of law-abiding Missourians," said Chris W. Cox, chairman, NRA-PVF. "The NRA is proud to endorse Chris Koster and we urge Missouri's gun owners and sportsmen to get out this November and vote to elect a governor with a proven record of fighting to preserve the Second Amendment."

One issue appears to be front and center in Central Florida this election season: gun rights.

Since the Pulse nightclub shooting nearly three months ago, a new gun control political action committee has launched, Central Florida campaign fliers are touting second amendment rights or gun reform and donations to firearms-related groups have spiked.

Nationally, gun policy ranks fifth among voters' concerns up from 13th place four years ago in Pew Research Center polls. Experts cite the mass shooting in Orlando, in which 49 people were killed, as the reason for the renewed interest in an old issue.

Lott notes that universal background checks only exist in eight states, and six of those states didnt adopt them until 2013 to 2015. So he caveats his findings by granting that eight states is a small sample, and the data from those states is small as well. Yet the extant data shows that since 2013, states with universal background checks have experienced 124 percent more mass public shootings and dramatically higher rates of death and injury. In fact, per capital, there were 267 percent more deaths and 1,431 percent more injuries.

Many firearms instructors coming from a military or law enforcement context are excellent instructors on basic gunfighting, but once you throw small children into the mix, theyre often going to be at a loss for tactics.

Fortunately, there are a number of talented instructors taking on the challenge of providing instruction how developing tactics for parents.

In addition to Tatiana Whitlock (video, above), there are other instructors working on this same kind of tactical problem, including Melody Lauer (photo, below) and John Johnston of Citizens Defense Research, who are teaching a class called Contextual Handgun: The Armed Parent/Guardian (TAP/G for short) which I reviewed in June.

On September 14, Missouri lawmakers will convene with the opportunity to override Governor Jay Nixons (D) veto of SB 656, permitless carry.

The permitless carry bill would expand the exercise of the fundamental right to self-defense of Missourians and strengthen their ability to protect themselves and their families by doing away with the requirement that law-abiding Missourians go through a permitting process to exercise Second Amendment rights.

Last week, the NOLA City Councils Criminal Justice Committee overwhelmingly voted to send a misguided and potentially unlawful package of gun control ordinances to the full Council for consideration and a vote this Thursday, September 8. The package, which has already been drastically amended in acknowledgement of the numerous unlawful provisions that were previously highlighted by your NRA-ILA, still represents a troubling reminder that the Clinton/Bloomberg/Landrieu gun control agendas number one priority is to restrict the rights of law-abiding gun owners.

As the sound of 12-gauge shotguns becomes increasingly and ironically soothing, American politics is seemingly the last thing on anyones mind. And its almost beautiful the way that something so politically divisive can bring people together. Theres no denying that this is a part of our culture even in a suburb of the most liberal city in the nation.

On the other hand, Ill admit that as I look around at the various shooting stations, I certainly cant say I believe that nights like these are worth the deaths of thousands of Americans every year. But I also cant say that these people are the root of the problem.

Its been nearly a year since the Missoula City Council held its first public hearing on an ordinance aimed at closing the gun show loophole.

Now that controversial proposal is heading back before the council later this month.

The proposed ordinance hasnt been brought to a public hearing since last October when half of the members currently sitting on the city council hadnt yet been elected.

After all, this time, the question on many minds was: is this ordinance legal?

If I remember correctly, last year Tim Fox chimed in that this law may, this proposed ordinance may very well be illegal, said Ward 2 Council member Harlan Wells.

Lets pretend we have decided to make gun possession much more restrictive in the belief however misplaced that it will save lives. Whos going to manage the background checks designed to weed out those who shouldnt have access? Whos going to enforce the rules? Whos going to follow up to make sure people are abiding by whatever stipulations are in place? Whos going to secure the illegal weapons confiscated by law enforcement?

The federal government, right? The same people responsible for the NSA, the TSA, Medicare (more than $7 billion in fraudulent claims since 2007), Medicaid, Obamacare, Social Security, the V.A.

Do you have a gun?

This is one of the things I ask before my kid goes to anyones house for a playdate for the first time. Ill send it in an email usually, although sometimes in an overworked text. After two blathering paragraphs about the kids or school or crockpots, I just sort of blurt it out: Do you have a gun? And if so, do you have it in a lockbox?

The Third U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that individuals convicted of certain non-serious misdemeanor crimes do not lose their fundamental rights under the Second Amendment in a decision involving two separate cases brought by the Second Amendment Foundation.

The unanimous ruling came from an en banc panel in the combined cases of Binderup v. the U.S. Attorney General and Suarez v. the U.S. Attorney General.

Ed.: The Third U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals covers PA, DE, NJ, and USVI.

Mass shootings make the headlines, but the majority of all gun deathsnearly two-thirds each yearare actually suicides. Nearly half the people who killed themselves in 201421,334 out of 42,773did so using a gun, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted in a report in April.

So, finding a way to reduce this specific type of violence could have a big impact, Robert Gebbia, CEO of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, realized. But the fraught political climate surrounding any discussion of restricting gun rights was an obvious obstacle. The CDC isnt even allowed to fund research on gun violence, for example.

The Second Amendment is unique because access to a material good is necessary for someone to enact it. Without access to arms and ammunition, one cannot keep and bear arms. This makes the Second Amendment really susceptible to market restrictions and marketplace politics.

These marketplace threats to the Second Amendment tend to manifest in two ways. First, the market itself is heavily regulated. The rules governing the sale and transfer of firearms are vast. Secondly, manufacturers and producers of ammunition and firearms pay an 11 percent excise tax that gets wrapped into the cost that is passed onto the end consumer.
