A new study of gun ownership in the United States notes a shift: Americans are increasingly interested in handguns, the types of small weapons that are easily hidden and used for self-defense, rather than rifles and shotguns used for hunting and shooting sports. The study, conducted in 2015 by researchers from Harvard and Northeastern, sought to better understand the size and composition of the countrys gun inventory. It found that handguns made up 42 percent of the countrys privately owned firearms, up from 34 percent in 1994.

A handgun is the last thing you need for home defense.

Solid doors and windows, good locks, lighting, alarms, etc., are all things a perpetrator should have to deal with well before he encounters your gun.

Remember - if you don't know that he's there until he's standing over your bed, the gun in your nightstand isn't going to help.

And if you have all those measures in place, the chances you'll need a gun are remote.

But, if after all of that, if you do need a gun, you're going to need one very badly.

Agreed, but you left out a dog. A good dog will alert you to an intruder before they can surprise you and give you time to get to your gun.

Alarms don't always work as intended, and as far as summoning help. Good luck.
